Scary Opening.

There is an ever increasing population of sheep that are afraid of everything, while I won't intentionally antagonize them, I won't adopt their cookiepuss ways either. If I need a tool, I open it as designed, if it's to hot to carry conceal, or I plan on physical activity, I open carry my handgun lawfully, I don't allow my boy to act up in public, I hold doors open for others, respect women and offer a helping hand when needed, shake hands firmly, and always look people in the eye when speaking to them. This is the way of life I was brought up in and will pass on to my family, it's an honest and noble way to live despite some being intimidated by superior men acting as men should instead of sniveling sheep.

While I agree and believe (and act) the same...it might get you in trouble some day. Sometimes discretion is necessary. A sad reflection on modern society really.

Beautiful comment. Cookiepuss ways... Haha.

I tend to not worry too much about what other people think, that's how pc took over the world. I do not intentionally go out of my way to be flashy about using a knife. After all, there isn't annything flashy about opening a blister pack or cutting up a box- but there isn't anything shameful about it either. So no need to act as if I'm ashamed or scared that I have to open said blister pack/box/etc.

Besides, the people that are afraid of a knife wielding, box opening mad man are the first to go when the zombies come.

Social awareness is just as important as any other type of awareness.

Really makes life go swimmingly when you take into account, at least a little, how you fit in with your environment.

Perfectly said. I work with customers all day and often cut various items for them. The slow opening or flick to the side is ideal in these situations. In customer service anyway, I can't always be flicking open most of my bigger knives.
Awareness of your environment.

I have lots of things in my life to concern myself with, other people's opinions of my knives are not among them.

There is not and could not be a question of the legality of any of my knives, so I open them in whatever way the knife and/or the situation dictate. If I have only one hand free and am carrying my zt560, you betcha it gets flipped open. Now I don't flip my sebenza so that one would be a slow open. Any of my traditionals obviously require two hands.

If you flick your blade open in the woods alone--Are you wrong?
Good God Man!!

Agreed. I wouldn't have called them "sniveling", or us "superior", but the spirit here is good. I don't bother worrying about people's nerves. Feelings aren't real. Anyone who thinks they are needs only to feel real pain--the kind that bleeds--to realize and understand that they aren't. More and more people seem to be letting their emotions cloud what is real and factual. That's where the gasps come from. I ignore them and go about my work while they catch their breath, hoping maybe next time they'll flinch less.

If opening a knife one-handed is what it takes to make you feel superior, have at. Pesonally, I only get occasional snarky comments from people that know me as I feel no particular need to advertise the fact that I carry a knife.

All of my knives are within the legal guidelines of my area, but I still don't draw unneeded attention to myself. I use two hands when opening a knife in public

Including those who deride others as sniveling, or claim superiority for having a chunk of metal on their person.

In the end we're all just a bunch of ugly hairless apes on a chunk of rock hurtling though space, insignificant and unnoticed by the universe at large.
Delusions of grandeur inspired by pocket knives...:D

I like to take a wide stance, raise both arms above my head and shout "By the power of Greyskull" as I flick my knife open!

I find that by drawing all the attention, I am helping to educate people about the common use of knives. Once they see that I am simply stabbing car doors and cutting meat with a lot of shouting and yelling, they become acclimated, and realize they have nothing to worry about.

After doing this at your work, or social events for a while, when you quietly take out a knife and open it to hand it over to cut something, it does not seem like such a big deal anymore.

Another variation that gets laughs is to Shout "I am Duncan McCloud of the Clan McCloud" while parting your trench coat to reach for your large waved folder. Then, as it snicks open, take a Samurai stance and yell "There can be only one!"

This post contains much wisdom. :D

We may occasionally disagree, but I gotta say I like your style.

In all seriousness, though, a little tact goes a long way and it's our responsibility as knife users to demonstrate courteous use of the tool. That often means using your knife in a way where it may clearly be seen, but at the same time not making a show of it and avoiding actions that could be perceived as threatening by those around you.

I find that being slow and deliberate tends to put people at ease, and often if I actually have to whip out a knife one handed there's some way to appropriately announce that you're going to do so, like "hold on--let me grab my knife and cut this" etc. etc. For many a knife is not a common sight like it is for us and carries different associations. Our own community and the community at large is best served by doing what you can to ensure that people aren't surprised by your use of the tool. That's just my take at least.

Also, mods, if anyone considers the above meme inappropriate please feel free to remove the image.
