Scary Opening.

i had someone complain to human resources about me when i pulled out my zt350(assisted)and opened it to quickly for their comfort i guess, cutting open some taped boxes.
that same person 2 days later sliced their own hand open when they were using a safety knife with break away blades, blade snapped while opening a box.
since im on the safety committee i was involved in the investigation of the accident, since time off and an er visit happened.
my simple solution wasnt taken into account but i did suggest stronger blades on the box cutters and pulled out my 350 and said like this...........

Did the exact same thing and was accused that i'm holding a murder weapon.

Bloody hell it's a multitool, not a flipper i always carry.

Sheeple...oh sheeple. She must but cutting all her meat with a spoon.

Make it a must!:p

I tend to be discreet about my knife while I'm in public. Not because of fear or shame, but because of the same reason I don't wear flashy clothes or drive expensive cars,I don't need or want any undue attention.

This thread kind of reminds me about the ex soldier in Nevada who was shopping at Wally World and an employee spotted his concealed carry and called the police, who promptly showed up and killed him in front of his wife.

Christ, where do you people live? I'm in Texas and I've never really had anyone express any fear or worry about me opening knives one handed. At worst I've had people question the legality of what I carried, and not with fear or alarm, just with concern that I might get in trouble-one person asked when they saw me pull my Cold Steel Spartan "hey I didn't think the law allowed you to carry a knife that big, you should better check if it's legal if you're gonna carry it"(Texas allows 5.5 inch blade, so it was indeed legal) and I had one person comment on one of my assisted Kershaws "That's a switchblade isn't it? Better be careful who you let see that bro don't want anyone callin the cops on ya!". I've got a few people comment "nice knife", or "badass!", or "that looks sweet can I see it?" but never any screams or shouts or or other reactions. And it's not that these were knife people themselves, it's just that none of them considered it a big deal.

I work at a grocery store in central California. When I have something to cut, I cut it. I open my blades one-handed, cut my stuff, and put it away. If there are people around, I do not make eye contact. I do not flash my blades around, but if it is a flipper or AO, it is getting used that way. normally opened near my side. One time a customer was having trouble opening a bag of coffee to use the grinder. I sat there for a full minute, about 10 feet away, just staring. He finally noticed me and I quietly and slowly opened my Delica, took the bag, opened it, and handed it back to him

Another variation that gets laughs is to Shout "I am Duncan McCloud of the Clan McCloud" while parting your trench coat to reach for your large waved folder. Then, as it snicks open, take a Samurai stance and yell "There can be only one!"

I got a good laugh out of that, I would love to see that happen. Particularly at a renaissance fair.

I can't blame you I would've done the same thing. But I would've went into a small rant on why such a knife is safer than what they were using.

As for me I try to open my knives a bit more discretely in public to not draw attention. Or I just open it quickly, cut whats needed and put it away, by the time you hear it and look my direction I'm already putting the knife away.

While i do use my knives discreetly around the general masses it frustrates me that i have to do so just so some hand wringer will sleep soundly. Makes me want to wave out my spartan as aggressively as possible just cause i can. they're the people that are ruining our way of thinking/life. Common sense is exercised much with them.

The thing is, in some places you can wave a knife from your pocket and stab something and people will go "COOL!" and in other places, they'll soil themselves and call the cops. It's all just about knowing where you are and acting accordingly.

Can you blame them really though? We live in a society where everything is pre-cut up and packaged with layers and layers of wasteful plastic so people don't have to use or carry knives anymore.

Nonsense, you can always make them smaller! ;)

Agreed. I mean, who whips out a knife at a wake?!? :D

Sure, I want to wear gym shorts and flip-flops everywhere and fart (can I say that?) whenever I want, too. But there are times when that is inappropriate. I don't go blaming "sheeple" for it.

You're a little off base there. You can't really compare farting with the simple act of deploying a knife. Passing wind in public is just gross. Opening a tool (like a knife) the way it was intended to be opened (via wave, thumbstud, whatever) is just that, deploying a tool. If we keep succumbing to the pressure of these feminized politically-correct wimps (or "sheeple" as some call them) then we will no doubt continue down this path of eroding freedoms that we're already on and find ourselves just like the wonderful nanny state of Great Britain. If someone looks at you funny next time you open your knife either ignore him or tell him to grow a pair. That simple.

You need to come to a family wedding! At my cousin's wedding, at least 1/2 of the adults were packing. Literally, in the wedding line, there were at least 5 guns, and not all being carried by the men!

Sure...for a wedding! Especially a cousin's wedding...anything goes. But a wake?!? :D

I love a happy ending !!!:D:D;)

What's funny to me is at work when I use a knife around the customers, the old ones never skip a beat unless I'm using a trad and then they just tell me about the ones they had growing up. But the 25-40 crowd tends to make fearful comments or gestures quite often. I had a young guy about 25 or so tell me it's scary because it's a deadly weapon. I said I suppose it could be in the wrong hands but in my hands it's just a tool to make my job easier and safer. He then said something along the lines of how I could get angry and stab someone with it. I told him, you wouldn't care if I was carry around a newspaper would you? Well you can stab and even bludgeon with those. He saw my point and asked more about the knife in what became an interested tone. Bottom line for me is, as long as you know the laws: if you got it, flip it. Don't swing out your arm and do a karate kick with a Bruce Lee sound effect. Just open it, use it and put it back like it's normal. Sometimes people around you then just start to finally see it as normal as it actually is.
