ok so because i am a member of my schools "tinker shop" through an agreement with the principal i am allowed one EDC knife under 3.5 inches and one multi tool im using a skeletool for the tool but according to the agreement the knife must be "non threatening, not black, folding, non assisted, with a pocket clip that must always be visible but the knife may not be obviously visible by other students just the clip any ideas? i was thinking a brightly coloured mini grip

but the back of the knife pops out a bit

any recomendations? price range under 100

I know that Kershaw ETs ride very low in the pocket. It looks like a pen is clipped in the pocket :)

Kershaw makes it in a Greyish/Whitish color.

The blade is 3 and a quarter inches long.

MCUSTA MC0014 Cocobolo Folder (New Graham has in stock)

Spyderco Delica 4 in SS or Pink FRN. (New Gaham has both in stock)

I suggest something in a Wharncliffe stly. Simply, it will look like less of a threat to others. The are many great knives with that blade shape.

In many ways, you have been granted a very unique permission that has the potential to serve as an excellent precedent! Please do us proud!

:)

My suggestion would also be a Kershaw or Spyderco folder, not black in color of course, and non-assisted in opening with any springs, etc. Something non-serrated, with a blade in the sub-3" range.

Good luck to you in your endeavors!

Professor.

Oh brother. Everyone knows that having a black blade makes a knife more dangerous.

I would recommend a Spyderco Delica in whatever color you choose. You can get it in foliage green G10 or white FRN right now. Or bright yellow, if you want a Salt.

Can't go wrong with a Spyderco.

A Kershaw Junkyard Dog. It has a 3" blade and isn't very noticeably. It's non-assisted. The aluminum handles have Air Force motifs on them and certainly aren't very threatening.

You are one lucky guy. The most I can carry at school is my Wenger Air Traveler. Hopefully this does set a precedent, and maybe one day we'll see ten year olds playing mumbly peg in the playground again.

I too would recommend a Spydie and the Salt would be a great choice. I like my Kopa too but some see it as more of a gents knife. I don't know if you'd be interested in it or not but I like mine. Whatever you choose, you better paint the sucker pink so you don't scare the sheep! :jerkit:

The Kershaw Vapor that I carry is friendly to non-knife people. It is an inexpensive blade. Non-assisted opening.

How low profile does he desire? Most any knife is going to have a bit of the handle sticking above the pocket.

STR in his forum can custom make a low ride clip for most anything.

There is a knife that has a glass breaker that can be swapped out for a tip that looks like the button from a ball point pen. Anyone know which one I am thinking of?

Why bright colored scales? I would think that in this situation you would want coloration that would blend in and not be noticed.

I have read about people coloring the clip on knives blue to match the blue jeans they often wear.

Read some regional laws that have a 3" limit in CA and a school law that says must be under 2.5". Maybe you should look into this.

In GA it is a felony to have anything 2 inches or over in a public school. It is a minimum of 2 years up to 5 years in lock-up. $10,000 maximum fine too.

I have permission from the principal and the school police officer just so we are all clear but I would not touch anything even at 2 inches.

Not trying to tell you what to do as you may have already read the code in CA but I does not matter who says it is OK if it is on the books.

I would think discretion would be your top priority. ;)

Good luck! :)

does your state law have an exception for ceremonial use? because I know TN does, so if the principle did his work and set it up as "ceremonial use" then you would be safe, at least under our law.

I would not think that a letter from a school principal could supercede a state law. It might be something you could present to a judge or DA if you are charged but it would be up to the DA if he wanted to charge you and up to a judge if you broke the law.

I know it might not be the knife of choice for everyone, especially steel snobs like me, but BM Mini-Pika fits the bill quite well, even though being black... But the clip is one of the best and most discreet I've ever seen. Still, N690-steel is quite good. Maybe you could paint the handle with some brighter color?

OR, you could just get youself a Delica with the white handle and then mod a low-carry clip to it?

I think the principle has to write the letter first, get it approved, and then you as the student are approved for ceremonial carry. The exception is written directly into the tennessee state law about carrying weapons on school premises, right with the exception for active military and law enforcement.

This is the same exception which lets ROTC do their thing on campus.
