school knife carry

It seems like, if I were the principal, that the knife should ~not~ have a clip. That way no one outside of your club would ever know you had a knife. Some of the other students aren't going to appreciate your super-special exception that's above the rules for everyone else. Therefore, I'd be as absolutely discrete as possible.

You might mention that to the principal, "I'm not comfortable with the other students seeing my pocket clip. Can I bring a knife that doesn't have one?"

Plus, if you didn't have the pocket clip rule you could carry something traditional. Like a barlow or stockman.

I started a thread over in traditional about this very topic a while ago. I was gonna recommend a Case Sodbuster Junior in CV steel (gonna be my school use knife when it gets here on Friday:)), but then I saw that it had to have a clip. Also, I noticed the law says the blade has to be under 2.5 inches. In that case, some variant of the Boker Subcom would be perfect. The Wharcom (Subcom with wharncliffe blade) and the Subclaw (Subcom with hawkbill blade) would be options as well.

Also, does the "can't be black" rule apply to only the blade, or the handle as well?

Well you can get custom scales for the Subcoms, if you really arent allowed to have black.

Whaaat?? This is crazy. I'm a sophomore in high school and I've carried a pocket knife(Traditional)every day since 7th grade. I can't tell you how much I've needed it, or a teacher has.
Many a time, my Building Trades instructor has misplaced his knife and specifically asks for mine. BTW, it's usually a Case, either a Peanut, Medium Stockman, or Mini Trapper..all yellow with CV steel.

Another vote for blue or yellow mini-grip. Excellent knife with a very sheeple friendly look.

Oh my god. If I even left a knife in my CAR(which gets searched along with all the other students at least once a month) at school I would end up being pushed on the ground, handcuffed and arrested, I have no doubt.

I feel really jealous. :D

I do like yellow and have one, but blue might camo with bluejeans a little better, if you wear them. I would tell you pink is sheeple friendly, but in high school you might get picked on and have to use your pink knife on someone. :D That was a joke.

well since you have a car in highschool, Im assuming you are either american or canadian, so where exactly do you live that this is the case?

just more proof we need comprehensive FEDERAL laws that are sensical and designed to give non felons the benifit of the doubt within reason.

p.s. if you have the money for a lawyer get an injunction against the school. I will make an incredibly general statement here, but all school officials are the same, and they deserve ZERO respect. tell your parents you think that its terribly unfair that you can be searched without probable cause. if you are 18, sue the damn school district yourself. if you are 18, not only can you legally have a gun in your glove box or boot in many states, but you cant be searched like that since the parentis in loco status of the school no longer applies to you and you are entitled to FULL rights even on school campus. too bad I graduated long before I turned 18 and could be a real pain in the ass to my district, goodness knows they deserved it for what they did to us students in the name of "zero tolerance". turns out the supreme court overruled this case =/

also I hate that this applies to guns but not something useful like a knife:

(c) (1) It is an offense for any person to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any firearm, not used solely for instructional or school-sanctioned ceremonial purposes, in any public or private school building or bus, on any public or private school campus, grounds, recreation area, athletic field or any other property owned, used or operated by any board of education, school, college or university board of trustees, regents or directors for the administration of any public or private educational institution. It is not an offense under this subsection (c) for a nonstudent adult to possess a firearm, if the firearm is contained within a private vehicle operated by the adult and is not handled by the adult, or by any other person acting with the expressed or implied consent of the adult, while the vehicle is on school property.

this is TN state law btw, TX law is I believe more lax. I havent lived in MA for 7 years but I would assume their laws are quite harsh.

You must live in California. I leave a gun in my car at school.

after reading my state law over and over again, I am apparently not legally prevented from carrying a pocket knife (as per TN law, <4 inches) on the campus of my university.

the university says they have an exception to even a concealed carry permit, and that no one may have "weapons". they dont have a definition for that, but going by state law that includes batons/knives/rifles/shotguns/shaped nail files/anything pointy or sharp.

too bad 1/3 of the student body of the university of memphis is packing heat. honestly, Im gonna buy some armor or something.

Make it very easy for you, the principal and everyone else.
Just pick a regular Victorinox Explorer

Show it to the principal and ask if you could carry that instead. Then you and him are clear on exactly what knife you are using.

Yes, it has no clip but why a clip. I have an extremely hard time understanding the knife laws over there. If you are only allowed to carry a knife with a clip, why dont just carry in in a sheath then. Even Stupid and his brother can see that you hava a knife, or at least something with a clip that looks exactly like the knife has has at home.

By the way, if you are allowed to carry a multitool, why do you need an extra folder?

I have carried several knives and multis since I was 15. Most of the time it was a SAK. people knew about it but did not hassle about it. In theory you are not allowed to carry a knife at school in sweden too. However it usually depends on who and what. The straight-A student with a practical SAK will pass while the "cool" dudes showing off their knives will be liberated from them instantly.

Both the SAK and any multi, like the old LM PST, are by almost anyone seen as a tool that has a knife on it, together with screwdrivers, tweezers and what not. That "tool" can do many more things than just cut things, it can improve living in many more ways than just a folder.

The SAK has almost become the "standard" when it comes to legislations and knife laws. Many laws are written so that it allows a SAK but not above that. Since the SAK is a such well known concept it makes it easier for the enforcement as well. Red gadgety knife thing, OK. strange black thing, NO.

So I suggest that you try to negotiate that he looses the clip requirement, that would certainly reduce the possible "fuss" about you carrying a knife. Look at the people you meet in a day, can you tell if they carry a small pocket knife in their pockets or not, maybe it is their keys or a cell phone or a chap stick or whatever. Those people with a clip in their pocket is surely carrying a knife.

Lets compare it to something else. You walk past a lot of girls, some might be married, you dont know who. However all girls with a wedding ring are married, those without a ring can be either. The symbolism doesnt work both ways. If you have a clip in your pocket you are carrying a knife, if you dont have a clip, noone knows, you might, you might not, and since the default is not that you probably assume that they are not carrying a knife, but then there comes this guy with a clip, that stands out like a different looking whatever.

Just as Nodh said, if you carry a multitool that allows you to acces the blades without openning the whole thing (say Leatherman Wave, Charge, etc) you won't need any more tools on you. I am sure you have plyers and full sized tools in the shop at school.

An old style PST, or the newer Fuse are even less "offensive" since it takes even longer to get out the "dangerous" knife. The also dont have locking blades.
There is another more mentally deep issue in having a knife that takes longer to access.
With a regular folder, maybe with a thumb stud, assist open, wave and whatnot, the edge of the knife usually is in front of your mind. This is deep so get with me on this. Also there is a risk of overdoing it in a way because some subconsious need to impress people. "Look how fast I cat my knife out". With an old school multi you first have to get that rather bulky tool out of your pocket and twist it open and peel the blade out. I know people can do that really quick too, but anyway, that extra second or two it takes, your mental perception has already considered where the edge should end up.
Lets say you are are trying to cut something, like a piece of tape, with a dull stick and someone offers to help you. Wouldnt you mentally react more if in a split second a sharp blade was shining in front of your face than if someone pulled up a multi that took two seconds to open. That way you too are prepared on what is coming.
Compare it to baloons. You see a guy trying to pop a baloon with a pin, you know it is going to bang and you will not be that scared when it happens. Ten seconds later some other guy behind you pops another baloon and you go ballistic. It is the same thing.
So, a SAK or a basic multi is the way to go. It can not be less offensive than that.
