school knife carry

Hello. If I may make a suggestion. I work as a public school teacher in California. I carry a SOG Twitch II ( the smaller one). The pocket clip sits high on the handle so as to prevent any part of the knife from protruding out the pocket. The color is silver and non-threatening. No student, teacher, or administrator has recognized it as a knife.

well since you have a car in highschool, Im assuming you are either american or canadian, so where exactly do you live that this is the case?

just more proof we need comprehensive FEDERAL laws that are sensical and designed to give non felons the benifit of the doubt within reason.

I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I'm scared of taking anything that could even be counstued as a weapon into my school.

School Board of the City of Virginia Beach
Regulation 5-36.4
"For purposes of this regulation, the term "weapon" shall be defined as any instrument that (1) is used; (2) is capable of being used; (3) is designed to be used; or (4) appears to be capable of being used or designed to be used, in offensive or defensive combat, and shall include, but not be limited to, the following: (1) any firearm or pneumatic weapon; (2) any knife; (3) any object which is either designed or actually used to inflict bodily injury, or to place a person in fear of bodily injury; (4) any object which could reasonably be considered to be a weapon; (5) any object which, by its design or use, looks like a weapon (hereinafter referred to as a "look-alike weapon"); and (6) any object listed and/or defined in the Code of Virginia, §§ 18.2-308, 18.2-308.1 and 22.1-277.01, or in 18 U.S.C. § 921.

For instance, I went on a field trip my Freshman year to a technical university, and everyone was given one of those tiny Flat-head screwdrivers with a pocket clip with the name of the school on it. When we came back, we all had to put them in our lockers as they could be construed as "weapons".

So maybe you see why I'm so jealous. ;)

Holy crap, Dinxsua, I think that policy wins the prize for being the most ridiculous "weapons" policy I've ever seen or heard about before.

I especially love this part:

(4) appears to be capable of being used or designed to be used, in offensive or defensive combat

So I could say something like, "I bet you could really hurt someone with this," while holding any number of mundane items (baseball bat, pen/ pencil, X-acto knife, lunch tray, fork, spoon, butter knife, boot, shoe, electric pencil sharpener, baseball, football, basketball, kitchen knife, ect. [all of these can be found lying around in plain site and within reach of everyone at most high schools]), and get said item insta-banned? According to the "appears to be capable" part, they would have no choice but to ban it. I bet I could make that school eat their policy! Hehehe.:D

In all seriousness though, they'd probably call ME the idiot for pointing it out.

I put a pocket clip on one of my cell phones. It was always a good laugh when some one would ask me what type of knife I was carrying. I'd show them the phone, then pull out my knife, usually a small DDR knife kits knife. :D

When I was in high school (30+years ago---yes, I'm old and I fart therfore I'm an old fart), I would carry a Buck stockman, Buck 110, or some times a sheath knife. In the really boring classes, I would whittle and sharpen pencils. My high school was across the street from Stanford (why a tree for a mascot?!!!!).

It's for shop use...how about a buck 110? Nice traditional knives shouldn't get many second glances, and you wouldn't need serrations anyways for shop work. Plus, if the steel and edge are good enough, serrations wouldn't be as necessary.

your biggest concern are the people (often times women, but men as well) that freak out at the sight of knives and the such. if you can recognize them, it's best to keep your knife a secret and not go showing off. I have a multi tool in my backpack sometimes at school. It's for stage crew. I help make the sets for the school musicals and plays.

I particularly like #3. Can't have anything that might scare somebody...I think that's in the Constitution: "The people shall not be exposed to anything which might cause fear in their hearts..." No wait! Maybe not.

"Hold it, there Gridley ! Is that a Combat Twinkie I see in your sack lunch !?That thing is only made to stab somebody with! Someone call 911 !!"

Give me a break ! I recall the 7th grade project (~1958) regarding the history of WWII. We all brought our dads' war souvenirs in for show-n-tell.
Several kids brought in belted machine gun ammo, bayonets, and several Japanese combat rifles.

Referring to the atom bomb, Einstein said he didn't know what we'd fight the next war with, but the one after that would be fought with sticks. He probably didn't realize that those sticks would be the only "allowable" weapons that we'd have pretty soon....A-bomb or not.

Sad. :(

(Sorry for the rant, but it 'gets my goat' ! and makes me fear for our future.)

Edited: to add more rant and appology.

But thats a spring assisted.

It seems that what we are trying to legislate is feelings. If you might make someone feel something they outlaw it.

If you feel someway it is you that are causing the problem. The tool (be it a gun or knife) that is sometimes misused is not the problem. I am a law abiding tool user. As long as I am using a tool for lawful good and gain and I am not infringing physically on anothers person or property it should be no business but my own.

Thanks for pointing that out toxic. I missed that detail in the original post. Regardless the technology used is within the confines of the law, as I understand it (CA residents please correct me if I am wrong). I believe the legality of the knife here in California has to do with the fact that the blade is deployed with a thumb stud or flipper rather than a button. But arguing the legality is a moot point as the principal doesn't care about the law.

Otherwise there is a plethora of options to choose from. But others have suggested the Buck 110 and now that I think about it I echo that sentiment.

In my job I do walk throughs with my customers which are mostley School Districts. We do the Networking and Network Cabling. I use my Spyderco Salt 1 clipped in my pocket. I catch the receptionist glancing at it when I first walk in and introduce myself. I think the yellow color doesnt scare people or look as meanacing as a black or SS handle. I wish it rode a little deeper and will be looking into a mod clip. It wont rust, it gets nice and sharp, what more can you ask. I vote for Salt 1. I also carry a Tasman with a neck sheath now. Just because it makes me feel like 007.

I live in vb to, the schools will freak out about anything.

If the requirement is now under 2.5"...

Spyderco Dragonfly in Etched Stainless.
Blade - 2 5/16 Flat Ground Leaf in VG10 (Stainless Handle Models only)

Its small and classy looking. Not very threatening.
Its kind of a scaled down version of the Caly 3.
Its an excellent little slicer and should be available online for $60 or less.
It has the required clip (although you might have to modify it with a deeper clip if it needs to be completely invisible).

clearly you need the Mall Ninja DeathStabberXL2 5000-P, with serrated DeathEdge* grind and rocket-assisted opening.

Or actually...

One of the bright green Mini Griptilians might be a better choice, on second thought! :)

Back in the early 60's we had a girl bring in her father's Luger, he brought back from Germany, for the unit on WWII.

I'm a teacher and carry a SAK to school. Everyone trusts a SAK. As much as I dislike a former POTUS, I have to give him credit for "Don't ask, don't tell." I just keep my knife to myself and only get it out when no one is around. I used to carry a Gerber Mark I in my murse but figured the sheeple wouldn't understand. BJ
