Schrade Extreme Survival

Someone needs to send one of these to Noss. I'd die laughing if this lasted longer than both of the CRK knives.

Mist Walker- I bet schrade would pay you for that review ( or an outdoors magazine). I'm not sure how long you've been on this site but I've only found your posts in the last few days, I have thoroughly enjoyed them all and have learned quite a bit from you already. I personally think you should write up your resume and send it ( along with a printed copy of this review) to a couple of magazines. I bet you'd have a job ( that you would enjoy ) in no time. In the meantime I'll keep looking in F&S for articles by Mistwalker.

First of all, that was a very thorough review. I have done a few knife reviews myself, and yours puts most of mine to shame. As far a knife, it is obviously worth the asking price. Thanks for the review.:thumbup::thumbup:

 WOW what a review 'Ol Bud  One of the Best reviews I've read yet ! Looks like a nice knife for the $. Thanks for sharing the info.

i think i speak for the forum when i say MORE REVIEWS PLEASE!!!
excellent job mistwalker, your thoroughness is much appreciated

Thank you David, I am very glad you enjoyed the review. I have been researching the usability, durability, and quality of outdoor products and teaching wilderness skills to people for longer than I care to admit out loud lol, but only in the past couple of years have I been putting in threads or on video.

I am glad you enjoy my posts, even more glad that you are learning from them.

Brian

Thank you all very much, I am glad you enjoyed the review. For the money this is quite likely the best knife I've ever bought, much better than many I have had that cost more.

Oh...and there will be some more reviews coming, thanks for your interest and reading.

Wow, excellent review. You made a new light shine on schrade for me :p

I'm not that big on fixed blades but this one definitely fits the bill and the tools inside the handle seal the deal on this one for me

Glad you like the review and the knife, it shined a new light for me.

Considering Chris Reeve Knives aren't too concerned about (I called and asked them) I see no reason why I should be. How many knives on the market are just variations of some other knife made by another company before it? Even if there were patent laws on this they would have long since run out, that's why CRK's were so high to start with because they were first with a fantastic design and wanted to get all they could from it before someone paid them the highest compliment and coppied it. Do you never take generic or off brand medications? Buy store brand products? Those are all just someone's copy of someone else's hard work and why the name brands are always higher. Higher prices may usually, but do not always mean a better product.

great review.

kind of off topic, but you may be surprised to find out that the "store brands" are quite often packaged in the same facility as the "name brands."

Thanks for the excellent review, kudos to the OP. However, that has to be one of the most blatant knock offs I've ever seen. It's so close that I wonder if "Schrade" got permission from Chris Reeve to make it. They even took the tool set from the Nkonka.
If they didn't get permission, it is blatant design theft. They could have taken the idea of a one-piece milled knife and done something different with it. But instead, they chose to essentially replicate Chris Reeve's design, down to the details of the blade profile, the knurling pattern on the grip surface, the guard design, the endcap etc. Schrade is obviously trying to capitalize on Chris Reeve's design recognition.

They are obviously emulating Reeve's design. Manufaturers of all products produce similar products to someone elses in all markets. As I asked someone else, have you never taken a generic medication? All a generic drug is is an exact duplication of someone else's "proven" chemical formulation that some company spent thousands of dollars over months even years doing researching, testing, and perfecting...then going through the regulatory approval phase. If one auto maker comes up with a design that works someone else emulates it in one form or fashion at some point. How many rifle manufacturers use the Mauser action?

I too would have felt a little better about it if they had made some more substantial changes to the appearance. I was even prompted to call Chris Reeve and aske them about it and even addressed that somewhere here. But...given how well the knife performs and how much it costs I feel no more guilt over purchasing and having this knife than I do in purchasing generic medications (which my insurance requires) as long as they work.

Good to see an affordable hollow handle knife out there finally. Though I am surprised that it came off Schrade's (Tayler Brands LLC) production line and performed so well. I have bought a few new production Schrade folders that performed very poorly. Will I purchase one? Not anytime soon. Because I would like to hear more reviews about this knife and I have an LMF II that I'm beating the hell out of now. I have to cut back on the knife buying anyway. Well try to at least;)

Great review:thumbup::thumbup:

It would only come close to theft if Reeve's design was patented. If not, no permission is needed for another party to reproduce.

Schrade's production line is wherever they decide to make the knife. The name is no longer tied to a brick and mortar factory on a specific piece of dirt. That being said, it is good to see a new source of quality affordable knives in novel designs, regardless of where it's made.

Even if the knife were a absolute clone of one the Project-I, which it isn't, that knife design is twenty-six years old. I would think the patent would have long since run out by now. To my knowledge most patents last a decade or less, but I'm no legal expert, I'll look into it just out of curiosity. That knife has been on the market for some time now with no mention of any legal action, I would think if they could they would have by now.

I doubt Schrade will be cutting into CRK sales.
People that buy CRK will still buy them and savor the excellent QC and finish, people that can't afford the CRK will buy the Schrade and use them.
It may even bring business to CRK because it will familirize non-knife people with the design.

I think CRK is looking at it the same way.
