Schrade FAQ: Is the answer to your question here? Steel, dates, models.

I can tell you they are good carving knives.I use mine all the time for different things.Carved three pumkins for halloween and it worked great.Arnold

Hi, my first time of being able to get on, even though the site tells me I did make it about two years ago. Funny, I didn't think I got on that time, and had a terrible time tonight.
At any rate, I have found some of my question answered, my 123OT is a pioneer, 4", clip according to one list. Do any of you have an idea when it was made? I do know that I have never seen another like it, and assume it must be an older knife.
I found it in an antique store in Mesa Az several years ago and paid $7.00 for it, and like all collectors [although I am a neophite] I love having it in my collection.
Thanks, Denny --and stay happy!http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

Looks like Schrade ran the 123OT from 1984 through 1988. Nice little pocket hunter. I'm surprised they didn't run longer. The Uncle Henry version, the 124UH, ran from 1985-1988.

Help! I have had a Schrade SC 500 stolen. Can anyone give me an idea what this knife sold for new? This is a scrimshaw folding/lock blade knife w/4" blade and picture of moose with some trees. I'm looking for the value for the insurance adjuster. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Domenic, sorry to hear of your loss! As you know, they aren't making these any more. If the issue is the one I think it is, it was made in 1984, 23 years ago. Condition and completedness play an important role in the value of collectable Schrade Scrimshaws, and indeed with any collectable knives.

A brief search of eBay completed auctions shows a similar knife recently sold for $61, which I believe to be on the low side. While I am by no means an expert of the value of these knives, I would expect the replacement cost to be about double that, around $120 for a perfect specimen complete in the original box with sheath, papers and slipcover.

I'm a big fan of Schrade knives and pick them up whenever I see a good deal. I bought an SC507 scrimshaw with a '57 Chevy on it at a flea market a couple of years ago but I never have been able to find out anything about it. It's S/N 2148, so I'm guessing it came from a run of 2500, or maybe a second run of 1500? It's complete in it's original presentation box w/ sheath. I've done several ebay searches since I've owned it and the same knife never shows up, so I have no idea of value. If anyone can tell me anything about this knife I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Sorry to let your question languish up here so long. This FAQ sticky has gone way over it's intended purpose and so frequently gets ignored by us members.

This is one of the "Classic Car Series", a special order by Ace Air Tool, one of the members of TEDA. I am not certain, but I believe there were 2,500 pieces of each issued. This series was produced from 1990 thru 1992.
1990 - 507SC - 1953 Corvette
1990 - 507SC - 1956 T-Bird
1991 - 507SC - 1957 Chevy
1992 - 507SC - 1965 Mustang

I am not forum savvy so please bear with me. I hope this is in a place on the forum which makes sense. I am not an "old" man, exactly, but I do still wear my cap with the bill in front. I got my first pocketknife in 1954 or thereabouts at the age of 7. It had 3 blades and might have been a Case, and had yellow scales. I started scarring up my left index finger with that one. It went flying out of a "Tilt-a-Wheel" carnival ride at the county fair in maybe 1962. Along about 1969 I bought a Boker "Tree Brand" 4 blade big pocket knife, which I totally completely wore out, and finally threw it into the garbage can after about 15 years. In about 1985 I bought an Old Timer 858 BIG stockman style knife (I think they call them "Lumberjack" in the records. It is my everyday user and may outlast me. It is about 4 5/8 inch closed and I just love it. Unfortunately, I just love all those vintage Schrade knives, and have recently succumbed to "collecting." This is an insidious destructive disease, similar to whiskey, or whoring, or gambling. I am especially fond of the larger 4 1/8 inch 296 type trapper knives. I keep getting distracted by some of the other lovely knives and have bought some. None of this will make me any money, but I have had enough experience in life to suggest that making money isn't really the path to satisfaction. Aren't some of those knives just lovely? If anyone wants to sell me a 296 or other larger trapper of interest, or even a lovely 3 7/8 inch trapper, I would be interested. I am also looking for another 858 to put up. I am in awe of the research you have done, and have downloaded a good share of it to a WORD document. Hope you all have had a nice Holiday season, and will prosper mind and body in the year to come. My email is calvinpruett@bresnan.net.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2008 to all on this forum.

Back on the 16th of August I posted an initial query about a Craftsman 95066 that I have. I may have gotten lost in the shuffle somehow, as I have not had anyone reply. I am still interested in finding anything out about this knife and again ask for your help please. I refer any reader back to my original post on page 12 of this thread for the details (I forgot to include that it has stainless steel blades). Can anyone help me?

Regards,
Tom

I found a note from a old post on Schrades made Sears/Craftsmans.

95066 - 4" Stockman, black sawcut Delrin w/eagle shield

I'll keep digging.

Hello, I've searched and search for the answers to my questions. Just hav'ent found them! I have a few shrade knives, I started to grt intersted in them when my granfather gave me a 127uh. (wish it said walden BUT JUST AS PLEASED WITH IT.) I purchased a few in the late 80's and im getting a little addicted to schade. I'll get to the point I puchased a 153uh+ golden spike on ebay. I'm interested in purchasing another one, but I'm getting mixed information. I know what the + stands for but theres different variation. Any help would be great. Thank you for your time, Renewd

According to the information I have, Golden Spikes made from the introduction in 1974 until midyear 1995 were made with carbon steel blades. Golden spikes made after midyear of 1995 will have stainless blades, and most likely the SCHRADE+ mark. Other tell-tale signs of the change are:

1. .165 carbon steel plain (flat) ground
2. .135 stainless steel hollow ground (finished down to .128-.130)

Guards, buttpieces and handles will not interchange between the two. These were modified to fit the thinner bladestock on the stainless knives.

This was supposed to be a running change completed as the existing stock of first design guards was exhausted. Attendant with this change was the production of the new tang stamp ordered in May of 1995.

The initial engineering change order (ECO) dated 12/94 for the 153UH specified "Our 1995 forecast requires almost 1,000 finished knives per week, and on this pattern we cannot afford production gaps."

Year end production reports for the years surrounding these changes:
1994: 43,158 pcs. shipped
1995: 27,666 pcs. shipped*
1996: 28,869 pcs. shipped

*Note that this figure includes both variants without distinction.

My Brother has a 960T Bearhead, doesn't have a clue what it's worth. It has been used, like a quality built knife should, not to just look at. The pick is missing. One thing I noticed is the old timer logo is a thinner print than some I have seen. Been carrying old timers for years. Thanks for the reply.........:)

Larry,

thank you for the reply!

When I found this 95066 in an antique store I did not know what it was, but it looked too much like a Schrade to pass up. You have at least confirmed for me that it is Schrade made. This is the first stainless Schrade that I have owned and it does not seem to keep as keen an edge as my carbon steel OTs and UHs. Is there a trick in sharpening them??

Again, thanks for the reply and I look forward to being in touch with you soon,

Kindest regards

Tom
