Scrap Yard Knife Passaround

Hey naked, do you have the knife yet?

Woops! I posted in another passaround thread that I had received this knife! Yes, I got the knife today and I will be testing it soon. I'll have it in the mail by Friday morning with pictures and a review following.

I had some time to get out with the knife tonight. I thought I'd offer some initial thoughts and some comparisons to other blades that I have.

I was at first almost shocked at the size of the knife! The biggest blade I own is a Becker BK7. This is a much thinner blade than the Scrap Yard, but the BK7 seems to fit my hand better. The handle on the Scrap Yard is really nice, I like that it is all continuous (on the Becker I can feel where the scales meet the tang). It was very grippy, but it didn't quite fill out my hand. I could have used a longer, and a thicker handle.

The blade cut very well, except that for me to get in some good swings, I had to slip my hand down the grip, essentially holding on with my top three fingers. I like how the knife is balanced blade heavy, but maybe another inch or two and it have better chopping performance. I realize, this blade wasn't designed to be a chopper, but I was hoping for a little more umph.

I really like the choil. Had the blade been longer, I would definitely want a choil. I had difficulty doing fine work with my BK7 because of this.

I also personally found the grind of the knife to be too thick. When working on making some notches in some birch (for tent stakes or deadfalls), I had trouble push cutting through, whereas my Krein Bushcraft, or my Griptilian just dove right through.

This knife just felt tough as nails. I used it to split some would it it worked great. The thickness at the spine, and lack of a swedge, made it perfect for batoning.

I was able to make some CRAZY thin and long curls on some fuzz sticks, but I had trouble getting a nice medium and even curl. I also noticed that the blade didn't bite into would when trying to slice off big chunks, whereas my flat and thinner grind knives would really move material... but not like a scandi grind!

I hope this doesn't sound negative! I really liked the knife a lot, and it was great to have next to all my other knives (and my GB SFA!). I've not had a chance to handle a knife that is in the same category of Scrap Yard. I'll try to get some more blade time in the next two days to see if my initial thoughts change! And I'll trying to take some pictures too.

As a side note, my son and I had to go rob a local park of some downed branches in order to do our testing, our new places didn't have anything chopable!

Naked, thanks for the review. Cant wait to see some pictures. Oh BTW I use to live just a couple miles from where you currently do...that is if the address I got at the beginning is still your current address.

Yup still is! We've been here for 2 months a love it so far. I can't wait to make it up towards Portland to start checking out some of the local makers and factories.

Knife has shipped today. I took several pictures, but and I'm going to try to get them up before I leave. I left my card reader at work, so I'll see if the Mrs. authorizes a pit stop before we get on the road. If not, then I'll put them up when I get back.

CDRules, I'm headed up to Seattle shortly, I'll honk for you as I drive through Portland!

I believe I am next. I have not received the knife yet, but I haven't checked the mail yet today. If not today, it should be here in the next couple days.

I got the knife. It arrived well packaged, safe and sound.

Since your obviously not going to hurt a 1/4" thick piece of steel, it got a bit of a workout. I'll put up some pics later, probably later tonight. It weighed 7 1/2 oz, which I don't think is bad for it's thickness. My normal outdoors knife weighs 5 oz, so it is an interesting comparison for me. The cutting edge is nearly the same as on my knife, so my question is whether the size of the knife and the 2 1/2 oz weight penalty are worth it for the extra .120 thickness of the spine. My knife is about .130" thick.

The balance of the knife is good, and while the choil is not great, I don't think it is that bad either. Why exactly it is needed, I am not sure. The knife seems like it would be great for batonning logs. I will do that for a bit, later.

While I am not a big knife fan, I like this one. Depending on the shape of the tang underneath the hande, I would probably buy one,(meaning: as long as the tang is good sized and doesn't have any sharp angles.)

Thanks for letting me in on the passaround. CDRules, I see why you miss the knife. Be assured it is well traveled and well used.

Scrapyard tangs are general like this;

full and pretty clean, I believe that is the S6 (from their site).

Thanks for the image Dantor. Well, here's what I've got so far.

The knife came, and it feels like a big knife. I can see why some people like the knife. I had to do all the mall ninja work with the knife, so it got the "stab through plywood covered w/ tarpaper" routine:

Obviously 1/2" ply isn't going to phase it, so I threw it a few times:

The knife could have gone deeper, but I wasn't throwing it very hard. I brought it in and sharpened the knife on a crock stick, just to see how it did. It took a very nice edge, that let it just slip through paper. While the edge could be thinner, I am used to a scandi grind, so it was a non-issue for me.

A little bit of time trying to chop with the knife told me that it wasn't a chopper, like others have said. My first cut into some firewood dug in over an inch, to my surprise. Then I realized that was a chunk of a rotted tree I had taken down. Printer paper could chop through that.:)

So....I am still undecided as to the knife. While I really like it, it is a really big knife for the 4 3/8" or so blade length. The good news is that it is not ultra heavy. It could be good for batonning if you're in to that. But, since it is not a chopper, does it really need the weight? The knife is not really light enough to pair w/ other tools, but is not heavy/large enough to stand on it's own. It really seems that this knife is a compromise, like many others in it's size class. Nevertheless, in the case of this knife, I think the total of the knife is more than the sum of it's parts, and like it a lot.

I will need the addy of the next person to ship this off too. If I hang on to the knife too long, I won't want to let it go.:) I will play with it a bit more before it goes though.

I sent you an email with the next persons information so you can go ahead and get it out in the mail tomorrow if you like

Sorry I wasn't able to post some pictures before I left town, but here they are:

Scrap Yard Fuzzy Stick, I could only make TINY curls with it:

Here are some comparison curls from my Krein, I liked the full flat grind the best.:

Woohoo!

Just as an update, I have the address, but did not get it out Saturday because I was fishing. I am leaving for a 3 day backpacking trip this afternoon, so it will most likely be Tuesday night or Wednesday morning that it goes out.

naked, thanks for those pictures. I hope you had a great time on your trip. Any Cal, where are you going for your backpacking trip?

I am back a day early. It was drizzling all the way in, and it was drizzly all day today, at least until it started pouring. I had taken my large tent since there were 4 of us, but it wasn't going to be capable of keeping us dry all night at the rate things were going. We decided to pack up while the sleeping bags were still dry and hike back out.

In all the bustle, one person's poncho had gotten left at the house, so we built one out of an emergency blanket and medical tape. Everything went OK, we got back and all our packs were still dry, despite a constant rain for almost the entire trip back.

Anyway, I will try to get the knife out tomorrow.
