I am interested in purchasing a knife from these folks but the website does not lend itself friendly in explaining how. Is there some sort of super duper secret handshake and code to do this. I know when I tried joining SwampRat Forums to find out about their knives I got the brushoff. It didn't allow me to join. Thats fine and all. Plenty of choices out there I guess. Just wondering if anyone has the ins on how to order from them?

Thanks

scrapyard, swamp rat, and busse are best purchased second hand through blade forums. Otherwise you have to moniter their web site ,and wait for the feeding time, and then maybe, a month later or sometimes longer you may be blessed enough to receive one of their knives. They seem to only make a single model at a time so the one you may want might not appear for some time if at all. Thats one of the reasons why i recommend fallkniven , bark river , ranger to name a few.

They build their business model around idea of knife as collector/investment item rather then satisfying customer needs in cutting tool. A lot of variants with limited runs - heaven for collectors and investors. But so it is not available for pick in reasonable time - you may check second market only. Busse have some good representation in Company store but Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard Dog company stores usually empty.

Instead Fehrman provides full line of knives to chose from and available in about two or so weeks - you may check them out, they doing similar knives. However my tests shows that Swamp Rat SR101 is better in edge holding.

Thanks, Vassili.

Thanks for the heads up! I was pretty excited about buying a quality knife like the DogFather for under $200. What a weird way to do business. I was disappointed with the whole SwampRat deal as well and then I read the We will never sell a knife to you ever if you contact Busse about SwampRat. A little extreme and I think this will steer me away from buying any and all products affiliated with all three.

Seriously, check the exchange forums, they have a subforum for scrapyard/swamprat/busse knives. Just don't throw away great knives by what might seem "extreme" from the norm.

Yeah, the Busse family of knives has an odd business model, but it seems to work for them, /shrug/.

As you can see from the ScrapYard site, they have no knives available at this time

Have you tried posting on their forum? you migh thave to wait a few days for an admin to grant you permission.

As noted above, your best bet for immediate gratification will be the Busse, etc For Sale forum here, or eBay. You might try a post on the WTB forum.

The knives are fine" except the price of some", its the" bmw cult like its a priviledge for you to own of our knives" so please bow to us, and run through our maze like the sheep that you are, and wait for the appointed feeding time, and then maybe will will grace you with one of our knives. The thruth is many other blade makers are able to compete with these companies, "that seem to be run by one family", and for less money.

I was really into the Swamp Rat line when it first started up, then they started to get harder to buy, you had to monitor the forums every day and be in the right place at the right time AND have the money/credit available when the feeding frenzy happened, or you were ass-out. It got really clicky, if you weren't all the way in you were all the way out. That was a big turn off for me, so I sold my battlerat and howling rat and moved on.:jerkit:

Scrapyard knives while somewhat exclusive are cheap compared to their Busse bretheren and compareed to similar semi-custom and commercial offerings.

don't be discouraged. some folks don't like busse family products.:grumpy: i like them alot.:D they are expensive but are worth every penny. right now is a good time to pick one up off the exchange for close to original prices. :D

and pass the kool-aid please!

NO REGRETS!!!

Swamp Rat hasn't had any offerings for awhile, but I'm sure that they will have something soon... Hope so, anyway. If you feel that you got "the brush off" for your attempt to join their home forum, may I suggest dropping a PM or email to Eric Isaacson, who moderats the BF.com Swamp Rat forum & runs the Swamp Rat store website, or try to register again. I'm sure that you were not 'brushed off' on purpose. :)

Could you please PM me a link to where you read this?? TIA.

That's funny... I've been buying knives from these companies since '06, and I have never had to "bow" to anyone, not found it a challenge to purchase what they've had to offer. Busse/Swamp Rat/ScrapYard Knives are what could be considered "semi-production & custom knife companies", meaning that they offer one, maybe two production models for a while, then pull them to begin another. Yes, many of us collect them, but many more use them, some of us both collect & use them. I will admit that when I first learned of Busse and lurked on the forum I did think just as you did until I learned that this was all "tongue in cheek" humor, and that Jerry & his crew really weren't like that at all. Most knife companies seem to have a core following of some type, and Busse does also.

I was really into the Swamp Rat line when it first started up, then they started to get harder to buy, you had to monitor the forums every day and be in the right place at the right time AND have the money/credit available when the feeding frenzy happened, or you were ass-out. What? Again, most knife companies do have a core following, or "clique"... However, there are many folks who are not "all the way in" who seem to have no problems getting what they want when knives are available for sale. You don't need a college degree to figure out how to buy from Busse/Swamp Rat/ScrapYard knife companies.

Don't fret and get discouraged like some people... LOL
Busse's are well worth the extra little effort in buying them. It's also fun.

SYKCO has made some changes in how they offer knives.

On 2008-09-24 Dumpster Dan made a major change to the way you can buy knives at the Yard (http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Knives&Number=213988). Scrap Yard Knives will now take orders on 1 or 2 models for approx. 4-6 weeks (depending on the model) and will then discontinue that offer. NO additional orders will be accepted until those models come back around in the model rotation. It could be 2 to 3 years before those models are made available again. This approach allows the customer a better chance of getting in on a model offering while allowing us to batch process or group build knives. This, in turn, assists us in keeping a lower cost of production, while ensuring high quality bladeware and the high performance that has become the hallmark of Scrap Yard Knives.

So get on over to http://shop.scrapyardknives.com/main.sc and get your fill of Scrap Yard goodness!

For those curious here is the old process:
The way Scrap Yard Works is as follows. Dan announces a new blade & then later on announces the release date. A batch of blades are manufactured and made available on the release date. Once they are sold out, we sit back and wait for the next release. Your best bet is to visit the forum once in a while to check and see when the next blade is due to be released. You want to be around at the release time as Scrap Yard blades have a history of selling out at a high rate of speed.

However it never hurts to check out the Scrap Yard store at http://shop.scrapyardknives.com/main.sc. You never know what you might find there! Plus you can score a bunch of schwag!

See you at the Yard,

Bors

Perhaps i did get alittle carried away with the whole matter, thus turning it into alittle kerfufal.

Heh, I like the part in that link to the Swamp Rat site where it says they could lose whatever contract with Busse...yep, Im sure a husband would swipe a contract right out from under his wife.

Anyways, I had a Busse once a few years ago...one of the "Busse Basic" models. Nice enough knives if you can get them but there are a lot of companies/makers who you can buy knives from that understand YOU are the customer and dont pretend they are gracing you with a gift from God if they allow you to buy a knife.

And they dont tell you that they will NEVER sell you a knife if you dial the wrong shop.
