SDFK is Glorious

Let me say it like this (similar but different from what Nathan wrote the other day): the HDFK is the best all around camping knife I own. But in practice, a combo of FK2 (or Dek) and basic SDFK will be more versatile :)
I've never understood the point of combining a 4-5" blade with a 6-8" blade. I've always seen 6-8" as being a 1-and-done fixed blade - not necessarily great at anything, but can do most everything. Conversely, if I was already carrying a 4-5" fixie (which should cover most actual cutting tasks), then I'd only want to carry another blade if it was designed for chopping / splitting (or slashing if dealing with a lot of light vegetation) - i.e. an axe or big knife (>10").

But happy to be enlightened.

That make sense if you have a back-pack, or leave the large blade or axe in the car. The basic SDFK is heavy and large enough to do chopping / splitting / slashing but can be belt-carried. Too big to do fine work though (kitchen, whittleing, etc.), where the smaller knife comes in. Then again, in practice that will more often be a folder for me ...

Yep. That's what I do.

My 'into the boonies' combo, where a decent amount of wood processing is expected, is the MC on my belt, a Silky saw on the pack, and a good folder (nowadays, either my ZT0562BLK or Demko AD20).

I've used LCKs (Large Camp Knives) of one variety or another for a long time, and my most used kitchen knife is a 270mm Gyuto, so I'm used to longer blades for cooking, too. I can do most tasks with the MC (and although I haven't field dressed anything with my MC, I have in the past, with 9-10" bladed LCKs).

If I really need the maneuverability of a smaller blade, I'll use the folder.

For me, the FK2/BFK/SDFK fall into the 'smaller than LCK' category, for when there might be 'some, but not a whole lot' of wood processing. Any of those will still do the job, including prepping a fire if necessary.

They just don't have the extra chopping/splitting advantage of the MC, but the SDFK edges towards that end with more chopping/splitting ability (while the FK2 edges towards the 'don't scare the normies' end 😅, while still easily making feathersticks and kindling).

I love my big knives but if I'm honest, I've never needed a large fixed blade in all my years of backpacking and climbing from Alaska to the Sierras to the Rockies to the Adirondacks, and White Mountains of NH.

I guess I was doing it wrong. 🤣

(But I still love those big knives. There's just something about 'em.)

Agree...and / or a saw of some sort.

No you didn't. But I didn't talk about backpacking :)

Etc.

Roland, that sure looks a lot more comfortable than my outings.

I can hear your dogs' thoughts...

"You think Dad will notice if we snatch those?"

Reminds me of when my Weim grabbed a bagel out of the toaster one morning. That was too funny.

I learned the value of a good knife from time in tropical forests.

But, yeah, if you’re walking trails or open habitats, and you’re not building your own shelters or fires, then there’s not much point in a large knife other than to make you think you’re looking cool/manly.

If anyone is considering leather for the SDFK's I will be dropping a batch of sheaths on my Web Store in the next 7-10 days. These will be sold without mounts and will be punched to support any 1" on center mounts, in two positions, on the blade seam. There will also be 1.5" on center mounts for the TekLok on the spine seam. I am offering a couple of new mounts with this run. A centered drop loop on a molded Kydex plate, as well as a pair of stainless turned "Frog's" that can be used in any of the mounting points for a custom carry position.

Once they are live a notice will go out to people subscribed to updates at my web store 24 hours ahead of any other notices.

Thanks!
