Sebenza lock up problem

Make sure the pivot bushing and blade stop bushing are not swapped. I've had two used from someone else that were backwards. If I'm not mistaken, the pivot bushing is bigger than the blade stop bushing. This could account for the early lock up and play in the blade.

^^^^This. Make sure about the bushings being switched if You didn't send it yet..

Sounds suspiciously like a blade swap. I'd bet anything that it did not leave Boise like that.

You can count on that. I'll bet someone was tinkering, wondering what all the hoopla was about and didn't reassemble correctly.

Bad news today... By the way how about the turn around by CRK!

Hello Matthew,

This is a courtesy email letting you know that your knife has arrived safely to our shop.
The reason the lock back fails is because this is not the original blade.
Each blade is cut to fit a specific lock bar and they are not interchangeable.
We have to options to repair the knife: you can purchase a new blade for $135.00 or we can send the knife back to you with the blade not installed.
We tried to make the lock up safe but even after resetting the tension we just can't make this blade safe in these handles.
Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
Have a great day.

Thank you,

Angela

I have a hard time understanding this. Being that the lockup is early, it should be fixable. In my small mind, all they would need to do is grind off a portion of the tang where the lockbar hits. If they refuse, I'd try to fix it myself by filing down the tang portion and polishing. Nothing left to lose at this point.

I would contact the original owner on the knife and request that they take it back as the blade change likely wasn't disclosed.

Unfortunately you are right. It was a cash/trade and the knife I traded has since been sharpened. So no more factory edge. Between all the shipping back and forth between crk and the seller, this is really sucks.

See if he'll cover the blade swap. It's already at CRK and that's the best route to go IMO.

He should help you out if he has any shred of integrity. Knew it had issues and sold it to you anyway. If that doesn't work out, I'd bite the bullet and have a new blade installed. Unless of course you want to unwind the whole deal, perfectly understandable to do so, but is it worth the hassle?...

Good luck!

There was no reasonable reason to believe that the deal needed to be undone..I would request that the deal be reversed..If the knife you traded has been sharpened by the other party, then perhaps they can just pay for the knife outright..The value may be under the $135.00 that it is going to take to make it right on your CRK.

Of course, this is just advise..Hate to see this happen..Especially in regards to your first experience with a CRK product.

Still waiting for a response from the seller. What is my course of action if he is not willing to do anything. If I pay to swap the blade I will have more $$ into this deal than what retail is on a brand new large sebenza. That isn't settling well with me.

Start a thread in the GB&U...IF it comes to that..

Ok thanks for your help bhyde. Hopefully it won't.

No problem

If you have exhausted all other options to settle the matter, then the GB&U typically will work as intended. If not, it serves as a warning to others.

Good luck..Hope everything works out for the best :)

Worked it out with the seller. He was willing to pay $90 and I paid the other $45 for the new blade. It is what it is but I am happy with the outcome. It could have been a lot worse! The seller handled it well and honestly, if I had pursued it, he probably would have paid for the whole blade. He wanted to make it right which I appreciated. Someone made the suggestion that I can sell the old blade to recoup the $45 so I might try that.
I may never know what happened with the blade but I don't care at this point. I'll be sure to post pics in 4-8 weeks when I get the beauty back! Thanks again for the tips and help everyone. I can't wait to get this knife in!

I'm glad that you were able to come to a decent outcome in the end. Let me know if you want to sell that extra blade.

Dang - that sucks. You get all excited for a high end knife and you have to drop extra cash to make it right. Glad you will end up with a quality knife in the end.
