Sebenza now in S35VN?

Thanks for posting in both threads JNewell. I appreciate it. It was kind of puzzling to me and good to get confirmation. The S35VN is sure pretty stuff. The birth date cards say it w/o the CPM in front of the number. It's CPM though right? I heard that's better.

Like the difference in 154cm and CPM154 - which I've learned are 2 different animals (at least that's the way I've been learning here).

I'm not a steel afficiando so I'm learning as I go. :)

Both S30V and S35VN are CPM steels. Crucible is the only company that makes them. CPM 154CM is Crucible's version of the old 154CM steel, but using particle metallurgy - with all the benefits of such.

I have a Benchmade 635 stonewashed S30V blade and new Sebenza large 21 with S35V blade, The Sebenza much more brighter.

I think there are tons of 21s with S30V blades out there, and will be for a while. I'm interested that you're specifically looking for an S30V blade, though? I doubt there's a whole lot of difference, but would have guessed "new beats old" was the tie-breaker? :)

The order was placed last year, the knife was backordered. All that is available was S30V, but since they are still on back order, I might end up scoring an S35VN model. That would be nice. :)

No problem. ;) The first thing I noticed, almost out of the box, was the better, finer polish on the S35VN blade. It took me a day or two to notice the color difference. Sometimes color differences come up just from polishing technique or the degree of polishing, but steels can also vary in color and I do think that's the case here.

Yes, both S30V and S35VN are CPM (power technology) steels.

Crucible says S35VN has greater resistance to lateral force and (if I am reading the datasheet correctly) finer carbides. The difference for most of us is likely incremental at best. :)

I find it disappointing that CRK would adopt a new steel and choose to heat treat the same as the old one. What's the point of that? Just to provide a shinier finish to the knives? Why not push it a little harder and improve edge holding. Makes no sense to me...

I think it's to make sharpening easier....

Oh well I really wanted to get one too, but if they are that soft......

If you are looking for pure edge retention and performance you're in the wrong place. Might I suggest some of the Spyderco Mules or Sprint run knives? :)

Yeah I know, but I was really hoping he would run it around 60 HRC.....

Crap.... I really wanted to get one too...... :(

That's a real let down for me...

You didn't really think they were going to up the hardness did you? ;) I say get one and then have someone else reharden the blade to your liking. AFAIK it's not the hardest thing to do if you have someone who knows what they are doing. Plus you could also then push it to whatever hardness you like, 62-63 RC even.

Oh I know someone that can do it, but not interested in having to re-harden a $400 knife and voiding the warranty on top of it.

Looks like I will have to go custom in S35VN.

Jim I suspect you are right, but like I've said before, a guy who buys a $400 knife is fairly likely to have half a clue on how to sharpen it properly.

You would hope so anyway. :D

It's not a ding on CRK at all though as I am sure he has his reasons for it.

I just won't be buying one like I was hoping, it's really a shame because they are really nice knives.

Buy a Sharpmaker. Even an idiot like me can use one. It even comes with an instruction DVD. ;)

Yeah, but the DVD is useless. I tried it after the UF rods and it didn't polish up the edge at all, there's just a lot of scratches on the DVD now. Should I have been using the side with the printing on it? :p

Nah, you're just doing it wrong. You have to spread the polishing compound on it first... :D

All knives will change to s35vn. It takes time to change over because we produce blades in runs of several hundred at a time & with several models that spreads it over mths it takes well over a year to change a steel type closer to two.I was the one who pushed Crucible to develop this steel and bring it to market. It is my choice to harden to 58-59 RC .With 35 yrs knifemaking and 10 yrs tool and die I learned that at that hardness you get the best compromise between edge retention & toughness.A general purpose folding knife does a multitude of tasks & above all needs to be tough & corrosion resistent.

What would that give us in terms of edge retention compared to S30V at the same HRC, say 59 at the high end?

Noticeable difference?

Toughness is good to avoid chipping or cracking, but I would guess that not everyone pounds on $400 knives with a hammer. :D

Just saying because I currently EDC S30V at 60 HRC in a few knives and haven't had any issues, but that's me and the way I use it. :)

Edge retention is HUGE for me, but not everyone is the same or thinks the same way I do.
