Sebenza or Spyderco??

Any halfway decent knife will separate a material into more than one piece. The questions is how much are you willing to pay for your cutting tool?

The Sage RIL is very very good. But are you willing to go that extra mile and pay twice as much for that little gain towards a perfect knife?

As someone that owns and carries both brands, I can honestly say there's no CRK knife I've ever seen that can cut along side a Spyderco. (comparing like model for like model of course). I love my Micarta 21 and it rides daily in a belt sheath but it can't/won't/don't cut anywhere near as efficiently as a run-of-the-mill similarly sized Spydie. That's just fact. I once used a Chinook to cut a 5 gallon bucket into a drainpan. The savage cutting ability of a Spyderco knife is legendary. Had a FRN Harpy that cut a plastic/rubber splashguard into ribbons. The list goes on. Spydies cut. That's what they do. They do it oh so well. :D

Sebs are wonderful. As a gadget freak I love mine. An example of manufacturing greatness. Opens and closes like it is on pillar bearings. What a smooth folder. However, when it comes to cutting... The Spydie wins every time. Spydies cut like they're on some kind of laser guidance system. :)

My grail knife is a Spyderbenza. Everything but the blade made in Idaho by CRK, with micarta inlays and the new lanyard pin thingy. Blade and final sharpening takes place in Golden, customer gets choice of PE or fully serrated blades (all blades will be flat ground of course). Round hole opening system. Street price four bills. Warranty taken care of by CRK. This is the grail collab of the knife world. If this happens, I'm in for a half doz of these. I'll have one in each pocket and one in a neck sheath!

Great post:thumbup: No way I could've written that and got my point across as well.

Not to belittle Spyderco but with no Spyderco using the pivot system CRK uses there is no Spyderco that can compare.
The Sebenza is simply the best production folder in the world.

While it's not exactly like the pivot bushing system used by CRK, the Manix2 (and a few other models from what I understand) does use a pivot bushing system and it makes for extremely smooth operation.

Anyone have photos of the new bushing system used by spyderco? Thanks

That's like saying the best car in the world uses a Hemi. CRK doesn't even use that brushing system on the Umnumzaan. As I understand it's a strictly Sebenza thing.

I've been using my small sebenza since '98. I don't abuse my stuff but my knives do see some hard use and while i'm a fan of spydercos (great knives for cheap) nothing has compared or seen more pocket time than my sebenza so for the high price tag put that out over the rest of your life. cost per use on my sebenza very inexpensive! and it has never failed.

The quality of Sebenza is outstanding, best ever seen on production folder. That's why each year CRK grabs "Manufacturing Quality Award" in Atlanta. No contest.

But OF COURSE Spyderco makes great knives as well! That's why I use them both :D I own & use Sebenzas & Spydies. One fo my "favorite knives ever" is black NFR Goddard, which in terms of quality can't be even compared to Sebenza, but it's lightweight, strong enough and cuts very efficiently. I carry it as often as my large Regular Sebenza. Simply different knives.

And yes, R.I.L. Military is one of my future targets :D

That's how I feel. No, there is nothing Spyderco makes that it's built with the perfection and quality of a Sebenza, but Spyderco makes knives with far superior ergos, better edge geometry and with better pocket clips (wire).

The Umnumzaan does not use the bushing system.

However, being the leading innovator that Chris Reeve is, he added a few innovations to the Umnumzaan that can rival the bushing system of the Sebenza.

The Umnumzaan can be stuffed with sand and still open and close as smoothly as before. Sand grits does not get into the pivot. The perforations in the washers allow lubricant to stay in there A LOT longer, thus leaving it maintenance free; in fact, even if you wash the knife in dish soap, just dry it and there will still be lube to make the Umnumzaan smooth as glass.

Again, the OP is asking the question in the Spyderco forum...which knife do you think will be favored?

I have 6 Sebbies and into the 50's for spyderco. The best made production knife is hands down a CRK product. BUT...the Manix and Chinook series of knives just can't be beat. PERIOD. They are monsters in the heavy duty knife world. I carry a Chinook everyday while on duty. Each company delivers a different product.

I like Spydercos fine, I own two Leafstorms and used to own a Manix 2 CF.

They aren't bad knives, I do like the leafstorm, though I'm trying to sell at least one.

But if you're like me you won't buy a knife that comes from overseas unless it's German.

So basically aside form the Leafstorm, basically nothing compares closely to a Small Sebenza. So that's what I would get.

You mean the Umnumzaan has a sealed pivot? I wasn't aware of this. Only the simplistic design and large thrust washers.

True, this is the Spyderco forum. ;)

So...we're dying to know what you drive??? Where your TV and camera and watch were made?

Also, more choice in steel. Sebbies are available in a single choice - I'm willing to admit that we probably don't need the range of hard-to-distinguish supersteels that we can choose from today, but if you want it, you have to look elsewhere, and Spyderco is probably the leader in the range of available steels in production knives.

I think there are alot of people who try their best to buy Made In USA stuff.
I do,but many things you just can't find made here and to me that is a shame.
I do not mind buying things from some other countries but I do my best to stay away from China and Mexico.
IMO the problem with our economy is the loss of jobs to over seas makers, there are fewer and fewer jobs here, before long there will be more people living on welfare than there are working jobs.I hope I never see that day and think before that comes the whole world economy will fall.

lock up on a CRC is top,no spy can match it,i have 100 or more spys they do not lock up with 0 play like a sebenza..........
