Sebenza Regular blade replacement...looks like a no-go

I knew I would catch hell for this.
As someone who also has worked hard to preserve an inherited brand and legacy. I can’t help but read his customer complaints and cringe a little.

Just my $0.02. I have had nothing but good experience with CRK customer service.

Nah - you are entitled to your opinion and observation but thought I should add mine as well since they seem to be different observations and interpretations.

Unless somebody doesn't know. Replacement parts from CRK or not free and new blades in S35V cost $150.00. So CRK knives would not be making replacement blades for Regular Sebenza's for free. This might clear up the warranty abuse statement.
.

the point being some crk customers modify their knives and then want CRK to repair or replace parts under the CRK warranty plan... not sure what the deal was with the OP's knife was.... since he never stated what was going on.

OP wasn't looking for warranty service, but to buy a replacement. Many members with regulars would like this option so they can continue using their regulars if they damage them.

understood...

i have a 15 yr old regular that i would like the blade to be replaced but found out a few years ago that option wasn't available... so i just use the knife... its cosmetic.. BG42 is more likely to pit than S35VN

Absolutely. I’d sure love the option of buying a replacement if I damage mine; for instance if it takes a header off a precarious perch as it did when I tried to snap this photo. Luckily I’m as careful as I can be and it just landed in some light, fluffy snow. The water drops looked cool though.

I have read several of his posts and I wonder why I still own any CRK knives.

This is going to sound like baiting, but I'm really not. My question is: assuming you (or I) find some things that Tim says or does objectionable, how does this affect knives made five, ten or twenty years ago? Would you really get rid of them, just because you disagree with current management of the company?

Yes , I would sell them all including the first purchased in 98 or 99. Also the reason I check the fan page. CRK told me updates on replacement Regular blades would be announced there.

So if a 25 needs a blade will it be replaced with an inkosi blade?

Yes, the blades are the same.
I believe it says on the on their web page they do not put double lugs on regulars or BG42. It might even say regular blades are not replaceable.

I think there is a difference in the hollow grind. 10" on one and 20" on the other..I think..took a hit to the head not so long ago, so that may be faulty info as far as diameter.

I'm just full of misinformation today:eek:, I thought I read somewhere that the blades are interchangeable.

I think they are interchangeable. Just think there is a difference in the blade hollow grind. I'm sure most people would not mind the difference.

I talked with Tim when he was in UT at BladeHQ when they release the CF Mnandi. I specifically asked about the possibility of CRK eventually offering replacement Regular blades. Long story short is that the tooling is obviously different, the machines may even be different now and the the code to run the CNC machines is different now. Its just been too long since Regulars were made to just "load up" old programming on the current machines and start pumping out Regular blades. His point about this product being discontinued is understandable. My guess is GM doesn't have a warehouse full of quarter panels for 69 Camaros any more. Yeah, yeah, you can get em, but not from GM. So, if any of you want to fire up your forge and start making Regular blades, go for it. I'd like one in damasteel please. Tim was really great to talk with. Pleasant and nice. I for one don't mind him telling it "like it is". I actually feel a bit guilty now about a couple of the knives I sent in for spa treatment. But I got those back in basically like new shape. One is a Regular I carry regularly. I won't be using it as a screwdriver like my Small 21 Tanto - ugh. Another story.

Just checked that thread. Honestly, Regular Sebenza has been discontinued years ago. CRK is a manufacturing company and as such they have limited production capacity. So they decided that Regular blade won’t be available as a spare part for purchase anymore. Well, for me it sounds more than logical. It’s a model DISCONTINUED years ago. They don’t produce it any more. It’s all correct. They need to produce knives, not repalcement parts for old models (we’re not talking warranty now of course). That’s how it works in any industry.

BTW, I’ve got two Regulars (S30V and BG42) and I’ll still use them hard.

I don't think most people expect CRK to keep making replacement parts for old products but this is topic of conversation now because they had been considering it and now it seems they aren't.

As far as Tim, yes he tells it like it is and that might rub people the wrong way sometimes but in general you get more useful information from him than you do from many companies. He'll tell you that they won't do something, why they won't do it, what might make it possible for them to do it, and what they might consider in the future.
