Second knife as a loaner?

I don't let anyone use my knives (not since 1992). I'll cut or lice what they need cut or sliced. The last time I let someone use a knife (1992), the knife was lost.

I carry 2 knives for myself only. If I know that I am going somewhere to do stuff with someone else I take a third knife like a Kabar Dozier or a tenacious. I don't ever lend out my good knives.

Borrow, as in leave my sight, always a no. If it is a friend I may gift him an affordable knife like a SAK or a Kabar Dozier but nobody takes one of mine out of my sight.

Borrow, as in use in front of me, very rarely. Usually I will just ask them what needs to be cut and tell them I will take care of it. If it is a rare scenario where I cannot make the cut, like if I am under a car working on something and in a tight spot, then I will ask them what they need it for and then make the call. In those rare cases when I do hand a knife over I give clear instructions not to mess it up.

Honestly, most people around me know I buy expensive knives and most of them don't want to use them in fear of messing them up.

I would no more carry an extra knife just to loan out than I would a book. Sorry but that's what libraries are for, maybe they'll learn to carry they're own damn knife. :(

It's not your job to supply someone with a knife.

If they need to cut something they can use their teeth.
Yeah, I feel kind of like that. Or a scissors of course.... But maybe the need might eventually nudge them toward having some kind of a knife on them to use. Some people learn quickly and others never learn.

I don't carry an extra knife for somebody else. They are for ME. It really isn't often someone asks to borrow a knife from me anymore and I usually will just do the cutting for them.

Some people simply don't like stuff in their pockets whether it be coins, keys, wallet, or cell phone.

I have loaned knives to people but I generally do not. On some occasions, I try to think ahead and I will carry a second cheap knife that is someone ruins the edge, or harms the knife, either it is easy to fix, or no big loss.

That has not been my experience as these people generally have no idea what is expensive or not. They will use it they way they want to if given the opportunity. Hence as you said, use it in front of me. Somebody needs to be handy to stop the blood flow or call 911. :D

I talk about knives too much then. My friends, family and coworkers are all aware that I like premium cutlery. Also, I sharpen knives for those same people and they often think a really sharp knife is too sharp. Some of them are a little intimidated by knives at peak sharpness and most people who know me know I keep mine quite sharp. I have had people not want to borrow my knife for that reason.

Some have brought up a good point. Most of us on here probably keep our knives sharper than the average joe is used to. Maybe sharper than they even think is possible. A few years ago I was just showing a knife to somebody. Not letting them borrow it or use it but rather just geeking out about knives and showing them what makes a good knife good. Just sharing some knowledge and appreciation. He cut himself with it and we were near my truck so I went and got a bandaid out of a kit I keep in my truck. I have kept a bandaid in my wallet ever since then. :)

I often loan out my knives, but only because it's trusted friends or family that usually asks. Even then, it really depends on the knife and person. No matter who has it, I get a little pingy when my Emerson, Benchmades, or Spydercos are out of my site. When it comes to the new Sebenza however, I think the only one doing any cutting will be me. I generally trust that my knives will be okay. Why buy all these "hard use" knives if I can't allow them to be beat on a bit if needed. However, everyone knows I'm so freaky with my knives, no one would dare to mess them up.

I'd have to side with this. If someone was "checked out" to use a knife they wouldn't need to be borrowing mine.

I will loan out my Case/Bose slipjoint to people I deem competent. It's a simple tool that almost everyone knows how to use.

On the other hand I've seen people trying to open and close one of my GEC slip joints or other brands with a strong back spring and it's like watching someone handle a strong spring loaded rat trap for the first time, kind a like watching a NASCAR crash in slow motion. :D

"Dude, can I use your knife?"
"No..."

I frequently carry 2 or 3 knives, but I don't loan them out.

As Bill Shakespeare once said, "Neither a borrower nor a lender be." He was a pretty smart dude. :D
Ah, Polonius' advice to Laertes. I get around this when I'm out on a job by carrying a garage sale knife, like a $5 Gerber or CRKT, if I get it back, fine. Too many people have cut themselves on my spydies, etc. and nobody is gonna walk off with $200 of my hard earned cash!

Jamie lion " anyone got a knife ?, there are actually no scissors around, and I can't cut stuff with my baton or throwing chopsticks "

Me " what do you need to cut ?"

Jamie lion " oh I just need to cut open this case of mini doughnuts to polish off as a light snack "

Me " hold on a second " ( I walk over ) " there you go " ( I cut the box open for him )

Jamie lion ( he mumbles to himself ) " what , do I not know how to use a knife ? " " I'm an adult "

The person may feel that cutting things for them is condescending, but it's only little kids who don't carry knives and if you're going to act like one you're going to be treated like one.

The last person who asked to borrow my knife wanted to use it to open a can of paint! I had a pm2, and a zt562cf clipped to my pocket. I contemptuously pulled out the flat head screwdriver from my leatherman and handed it to him. some people were just born stupid, I guess.

o_O I'm not following. Who or what is a "jamie lion"?

I always carry an Opinel on me in case someone really needs a knife.
