Can we use tools that are not ESEE? Like a folding saw or an axe? I know for the previous shelter contest we were supposed to use ESEE knives, which was just fine, especially since there wasn't much need for any tools to build a debris hut.
I just wanted to try a different type of shelter for this one and I think my Izula (even the ESEE 4 I gave my dad) would be a little tough.
I do plan on using the Izula and ESEE fire kit for the fire and snares and such. I just wanted to know if I can use my Kershaw folding saw for the shelter.
But either way.
Thanks!
Hey Joe, so this is where you have been hiding out. You know, you could think of it as a good reason to buy a Lite Machete. I'm sure it would do a little better than the Izula.Seriously though, I agree, other knives would be helpful when purchasing more just to get the job done might not be an option.
Plus, I don't want to buy one when I'm going to win them anyway!![]()
i was wondering, maybe my reading comprehension isn't great. if we have a partner, can they have a tin and knife as well, or is it one tin one knife for the team? just curious![]()
Maybe the guy that drinks the most Tequila while naked with two crazy women and listening to AC/DC while building his survival camp?

I might be mistaken (it has happened... once a least) but I believe that the idea is a challenge using ESEE products. Now I read jeff's post about you can take a motorhome if you want, but you are going to get less points. So I would assume that you can use whatever you want, but if you take a pack full of food, clothing and such, you aren't going to end up in first place.
Don't know which ESEE blade I am taking at this point, most likely my RC-3/Ratpack knife. What I am most concerned about is only two items not listed. 1) Water bottle and 2) FAK.
What I like about this is it give you plenty time and requires the use of the most improtant tool you have, your brain.
I don't see how this is excluding urban dwellers at all. Why can't you show off your improvisational skills using urban materials? For that matter, not everyone lives in the woods, so why not make a weekend of it and get out there?
i have a question
is the building of this camp supposed to be a 1 off, go in and do it all, or can it be an ongoing project
example, taking the kids out to the place ive chosen every day after school for a few hours and work on it?
i live in a low populatipn highly wooded area, one spot ive thought about is a 7 min walk(slow walk)
ive decided to give this a try
i dont think its likely that ill be getting a gold membership or an esse knife b4 i start, so i guess im doing it for the experience
maybe ill have that stuff b4 im done tho, and submit what i have for points reduction
aside from that kukri i posted about, all my knives are hand made here at home (nothing great)
and ill stick to using one of those, im looking forward to trying to build a fire bow an cordage, and traps
thanks for the ideas
if anyone would like, i can post pics of what we get done
cheers
mike
