i'm really gonna try to get in on this one... where's the waiver?

I don't see how this is excluding urban dwellers at all. Why can't you show off your improvisational skills using urban materials? For that matter, not everyone lives in the woods, so why not make a weekend of it and get out there?

Can we use tools that are not ESEE? Like a folding saw or an axe? I know for the previous shelter contest we were supposed to use ESEE knives, which was just fine, especially since there wasn't much need for any tools to build a debris hut.

I just wanted to try a different type of shelter for this one and I think my Izula (even the ESEE 4 I gave my dad) would be a little tough. ;)

I do plan on using the Izula and ESEE fire kit for the fire and snares and such. I just wanted to know if I can use my Kershaw folding saw for the shelter.

But either way.

Thanks!

Hey Joe, so this is where you have been hiding out. You know, you could think of it as a good reason to buy a Lite Machete. I'm sure it would do a little better than the Izula. :p Seriously though, I agree, other knives would be helpful when purchasing more just to get the job done might not be an option.

Plus, I don't want to buy one when I'm going to win them anyway! ;)

i was wondering, maybe my reading comprehension isn't great. if we have a partner, can they have a tin and knife as well, or is it one tin one knife for the team? just curious :D

+1

I'd rather have my sister help me build/do the contest and share the prize with her than just make her tent a few km's away.

I would love to enter this contest, but just having had lateral epicondylitis release surgery on Monday I can't do any of the tasks, best of luck to all that enter.

BTW I live in the city and can find places to do all of the tasks, not sure if I would eat the fish from the Red River though:eek:

I'll try to find a way around some difficulties - one the afore mentionned lack of time, second - the lack of weekends due to my caring for my grandmother.

One way might be: timing the individual tasks, so I can find out, if I can make a shelter within a given time (being on call for my grandma makes it difficult to complete any one task without interruption - and that includes my work).

I'll do some more thinking about this.

(And as I said, I'd prefer some smaller contests, as now I need to start soon, to be able to finish at least some of the tasks)

I might be mistaken (it has happened... once a least :) ) but I believe that the idea is a challenge using ESEE products. Now I read jeff's post about you can take a motorhome if you want, but you are going to get less points. So I would assume that you can use whatever you want, but if you take a pack full of food, clothing and such, you aren't going to end up in first place.

Don't know which ESEE blade I am taking at this point, most likely my RC-3/Ratpack knife. What I am most concerned about is only two items not listed. 1) Water bottle and 2) FAK.

Exactly! That's the whole format of the contest. What we would rather see is the most skills with the least amount of tools, but do whatever you are comfortable doing but just remember the judging line is the most skills with the least tools. Take a look at my latest post on the sticky and that might clarify things a bit on the "rules"

I think this is the best contest I ever heard about, and to have a chance to win a knife a month!!!

What I like about this is it give you plenty time and requires the use of the most improtant tool you have, your brain. I have to set this one out due to the time of year. If I'm not working I'll be out chasing critters in the woods. I am very much looking forward to pictures people post and looking forward to seeing what it takes to win. I did the traditional thing for a few years and learned to make my own knives and arrowheads from flint, chert, and obsidian. I'm not sure I'm skilled enough to knapp ESEE on the blade though. :)

I want to see someone win this using nothing more than a Izula. Either that or an ESEE fire starter, smelting their own metal to make all the ESEE knives. :)

For me the cordage would be the hardest. While it is easy to find or make something that looks like rope, making a bow string that withstands the forces of a 60lb self bow out of natural materials isn't easy.

Good luck to all that play the game.

right on spark!
thats just what ive been thinking. there are lots of "woods" in the city. hell, there are hobo camps within a mile of where i live(in the urban core) in about every direction. my pal kyle and i will be using a similar area for this challenge. urban setting but you'd think it was in the wilderness. thanks esee crew. this is gonna be fun. been wanting to get out with this younger, hopefully share some skills and learn a few things too.

i have a question
is the building of this camp supposed to be a 1 off, go in and do it all, or can it be an ongoing project
example, taking the kids out to the place ive chosen every day after school for a few hours and work on it?
i live in a low populatipn highly wooded area, one spot ive thought about is a 7 min walk(slow walk)
ive decided to give this a try
i dont think its likely that ill be getting a gold membership or an esse knife b4 i start, so i guess im doing it for the experience :D
maybe ill have that stuff b4 im done tho, and submit what i have for points reduction
aside from that kukri i posted about, all my knives are hand made here at home (nothing great)
and ill stick to using one of those, im looking forward to trying to build a fire bow an cordage, and traps
thanks for the ideas
if anyone would like, i can post pics of what we get done

cheers
mike
