I think there’s too much complaining about hemlock being red. Charlie picked six great variations of brown, and it’d be up for debate except you’re not Charlie. Maybe when you all volunteer to get the GEC forum knife going you will get to show off your art school diplomas and run your spectral analysis and decide the limits of true brown, but until then I’m more than okay with “Hemlock Green” being classified brown.

CAN I HEAR AN “AMEN”?!
Amen brother!

In the end, doesn't matter much anyway. GEC is not great at matching color - from year to year there is some variation in the color with the same name. You can see this in single runs as well - some turn out perfect, while others not so great. There is a lot of variation between the 300+ knives in a single run.. It's not a bad thing, it's just what happens when you have mostly handmade with in-house dye. Makes every knife unique. Regardless of what it's called on the production schedule, the color I get is the color it is when it arrives in the mailbox. So, whatever we pick, some will be darker, lighter, or possibly look nothing like what we requested. When it's all said and done, and you pop the tube on this years forum knife, it will be a winner.

I like to joke and enjoy this process ... I have my preferences like everyone but hopefully it's know my comments are all just good natured ribbing. Remember this will be an exceptional knife no matter what color comes out on top! Vote your heart as long as it's smooth ivory Now play nice or we turn Easyrider loose with the glitter and a 64 count box of crayons!

***extra subliminal messaging*** "SMOOTH IVORY ... SMOTH IVORY ... SMOOTH IVORY"

Carry on ... and a huge thank you to Charlie and all those making this possible!

Red was voted out. Hemlock shouldn't be in the poll IMO.
Yes . But then there would be arguement about shades of brown that I for one can't see the diffference between.
A ship can only have one Captain. Sometimes he makes a decision that many view unfavourably...but it is for the overall best. I know I would be happy with any of the original choices. He has the helm and the chart....we will all share the bounty.

I'm pleased to see that sepia is still in the running - third place...but it's so close I can practically feel the money disappearing from my PayPal account. I know, I know, copperhead is still in second - and it will be tough to beat - but I've got a simple solution.
I'll take one one of each!!
Think about it... Sepia AND Copperhead. It's a win/win deal!

When i first saw people clamoring for hemlock after brown won, i was a bit surprised at the notion. After seeing a hemlock in the same post with a blood red, the blood red shows that the hemlock isnt “red” as much as it is a bronze color. So it fits fine here.

the polls were so split between red and brown that its hard to complain about it even if it was all the way “a red”. If this truly lost in the last poll, then it will easily lose again. Most importantly, charlie chose to put it in the poll. Hes the one that took on this endeavor. Id like to remind him we are thankful for dealing with us.

It's an interesting rhetorical approach to state, as several are now doing, that questioning the "browness" of GEC's hemlock green somehow equates to questioning Charlie's judgement. But Charlie chose the brown candidates from suggestions other people made to him. I'm questioning anybody calling this brown - in photos it looks like reddish-black. And if we aren't allowed to disagree with Charlie, why didn't we all vote for smooth natural bone? (Which would have been outstanding!)

Red was incredibly close to brown in the last poll (and no color had a majority); and while I'd prefer every other color in this poll, I'd be happy with hemlock green, too. So I'm not super-worried about it either way. But it's fun to argue and try to get a preferred outcome.

Vote for the color you like. Argue for it - be persuasive. Use hyperbolic statements and arguments about color theory and high-flown calls to action! But maybe also approach this with some playfulness, too. The people arguing for a different color than you aren't actually underhanded villians.

I'm excited about this knife. It represents being part of a great community. Is it what I wish? No. I love the bolsters but I'd rather a spear on that frame, and a polished smooth blue or green bone. But this knife isn't just about me it's about being part of something bigger. Plus if hemlock wins well be able to explain to people about our brown knife named green with red highlights and watch their heads spin around trying to understand.

This thread has been a joy to read and I look forward to the final poll. Copperhead could still easily overtake Hemlock if people change their votes. Both are good lookers in my book so it’s a win-win. ;)

Considering the rather rapid upset in the previous thread, one cannot be certain of a "sure thing" - anything could happen. Regardless of outcome, we all win in the end though.

I had some time to go through the thread and read everyone’s position, and I’ve concluded that Hemlock would not be up as an option if it weren’t a brown color and that those who have hemlock GEC’s in their possession say it’s brown as well.

All the options are great, and I’d be happy with any of them.

But a few years down the line, I’d like to look back at this thread then down at my Hemlock Sawcut BF 86 and say, yeah, this was the right choice, it’s the only knife of its kind done by GEC, and it’s mine!

Use whatever rationale you want to garner votes, I just suggest steering clear of anything that questions the legitimacy of what Charlie has interpreted as “brown”. Even if it wasn’t legitimate, It’s too late to recall the color now that it’s attracted such popularity, and it makes me feel bad for Charlie that he has to read folks saying that he was wrong to include the color in the poll.

No matter what is suggested for brown colors, Charlie is the final arbiter of what gets included. He would most certainly not have included a color he believed to be red in the brown category. The guy is doing the best he can for us.

I don't post a lot these days, although I'm reading the forums daily. I voted for Copperhead, but fwiw I'd be just as happy with Hemlock.

It's fun watching the Forum Knife threads each year, because the end result is almost always completely different from what I expect in the beginning.

I think that's part of what makes this annual tradition special. It's a collaborative effort spearheaded by folks who are very generous with their time to make this happen every year. I'm just happy to be included in the process, and grateful to those who volunteer every year to continue the tradition.
