Use whatever rationale you want to garner votes, I just suggest steering clear of anything that questions the legitimacy of what Charlie has interpreted as “brown”. Even if it wasn’t legitimate, It’s too late to recall the color now that it’s attracted such popularity, and it makes me feel bad for Charlie that he has to read folks saying that he was wrong to include the color in the poll.

No matter what is suggested for brown colors, Charlie is the final arbiter of what gets included. He would most certainly not have included a color he believed to be red in the brown category. The guy is doing the best he can for us.
I'm certain no offense was meant.
There's a fine line between insult and passion... between diplomacy and whitewash.
He's our Charlie...annndd although he may be old... and decrepit.. and slow and long in the tooth....and Canadian...
IF ANYONE... says anything bad about him they will have me to deal with. and we love him.

PS can everyone stop pinching my label ideas.cheers.

If Hemlock wins out I sure hope that it is more Red than Brown. Just imagine the knife below without the tiny bits of Red on the ends. It would be completely unremarkable. The Red highlights are all it has going for it. Knives look different when photographed close up using high resolution cameras. Subtleties are often not visible under normal conditions.

Subtle Hemlock

Bold Copperhead

Thanks for your time and effort Charlie waynorth waynorth You have done an incredible job, and we will end up with a beautiful knife regardless of which color is selected.

Sepia/Tan voters and Antique/Chestnut voters, please give us your thoughts. You will ultimately make the selection for us.

Totally agree. The hemlock pictures still strike me as very blah. The one thing that’s been noted is the depth of color with the jigging ridges. That goes away in sawcut as it becomes relatively flat. So we’re likely getting a dark brown with reddish or watermelon shoulder combo (hemlock). I don’t get the appeal, but being a forum knife, I do hope the majority get what they want. Aaaand…I hope I’m pleasantly surprised! :)

I'm still feeling sorry about those Smooth Ivory Bone Barlows sailing off into the sunset! 😭
Me too. I was looking at the similar bolsters on the 2013 Bladeforum Knife and just thinking how marvelous smooth ivory bone would have been. It would have been a rare Barlow indeed.

But this one will also be a rare Barlow. So I will enjoy whatever comes.

My favorite gec Sawcut is spring green on the 77 clip. I don’t know if that can be replicated so I went for chestnut.
That was the first time it was done. As I think about hemlock green for this year's forum knife, the NF 77 Barlow in spring green comes to mind. I didn't expect the 77 to turn out as great as it did.

I hope nobody mistakes this as an attempt to persuade, or as a ruse. I just wanted to pull out some knives - all sawcut bone barlows.

Sepia is the only one in the official poll anyways. And, obviously, the Robeson has seen some miles.

Here is dark (saddle brown), yellow-brown (antique amber), light brown (sepia), and reddish brown (Robeson). I also tried to shoot them in various light.

Probably just the way I think...
This has become an obvious two horse race between Copperhead and Hemlock.
If I had voted for one of the other options, I'd switch to one of those two that I'd prefer... make my vote count for something.
But that's just me and I can respect others' resolve to stick to their vote.

Surprising variation in these examples. Probably smooth beveled white ivory would be the best bet.😀

Not at all, Mike. I believe everyone has the right to make a case for their preferences and I, for one, appreciate the time you took to showcase the differences in these colors - I'd love to continue to see more. I am really curious what the Robeson looked like when it was new and note whether it was always that color or if it evolved considerably with age and use.

I would contest that it is a very flat, uniform color (likely brought on by the factors I mentioned above). I suspect that with sawcut bone, barehead, and on a Barlow, we would see a lot of color along the bevels/edges and near the bolsters. While the flats will likely remain dark and might even lighten with time and use, there should be quite a bit of color elsewhere if featuring the Hemlock Green dye.

But, in all fairness, if I believed that Hemlock Green would give us a color akin to your Robeson, it would rate pretty low on my list. Your other examples are stellar (even the yeller one ;)).

I am a stubborn sort and I think I have only changed my vote once in years past and it was simply because I changed my mind. That said, I'm not sure how I'd react in these current polls if I found myself in one of the small minorities - we really can't lose with any of the options. Even Rotten Banana (which is a dye I really dislike) would likely be really neat on sawcut bone - providing that Appaloosa effect that you see on a lot of older Case Barlows.

What year is the Saddle Brown there?

I was hesitant to include the Robeson for all the reasons you mention.
But I had initially took it out as an example of what I thought was a quintessential brown bone Barlow. It wasn’t until the talk of GEC’s Hemlock Green that I noticed the amount of red in it!
