Everywhere I turn I keep being reminded… that it’s Hemlock BF #86 season!!

Here is dark (saddle brown), yellow-brown (antique amber), light brown (sepia), and reddish brown (Robeson). I also tried to shoot them in various light.
Thanks for the pictures- I don’t know about anyone else, but the sepia shows the most dramatic change from picture to picture. I kind of like that. In direct sunlight it almost reminds me of a cloudy gemstone.

It's time to just go "what the heck" and choose the most unusual, boldest color. While it looks rather dark in pictures, it's possible there would be a rich depth to the bone. There's a chance it could be amazing.

I’m right there with you, R8shell. I see the fun in rolling the dice. I’m betting that in person these hemlock covers would be far more interesting than can be captured with pictures. This is usually my experience with most covers. Worst case scenario with hemlock is we have something very different from what we’ve seen before. Best case is it’s a home run, people lose their minds when the knives arrive, and it gets lauded at the level of the 2019 BF knife.

However: here is where I shall not compromise! Sawcut must be cut on a curved diagonal of between 40 and 50 degrees.
Bill seriously does not like to get into such fine detail with us!! I think If I discussed, or tried to discuss 40 to 50 degrees with him, he might not enjoy it to say the least - he'd rather play with his grandson!!
I do have some details to bring up though:
He's agreed that Hemlock will work with Sawcut, and he will do it for us, if it indeed wins the poll!!
He will do a pronounced/textured sawcut. He warned that the handles will show as very dark; like the Jigged ones we have seen!!
Also, the Fancy Bolsters are underway, and we will get pictures of the raw stampings soon!!
Sue will send them to me and I will post them right away!!
Thanks, and back to your regular program!!

I think it's time to stop fretting about the names and definitions of these colors (brown is a shade of orange, which is usually a mix of red and yellow, but sometimes has undertones of other tints) and just look at pictures and decide which one you think looks best.

I felt pretty strongly about wanting the knife to be ivory/white. When that wasn't viable, at the last moment I switched my vote to brown, because I didn't want to risk a knife with pink edges, and a light caramel color is always nice.

For now, I'm sticking with sepia, because it's the closest thing to ivory, but...if it comes down to a Copperhead vs. Hemlock race, I think I'll go with Hemlock. I've got a few knives in antique yellow, and Amber/Autumn Harvest/reddish goldish brownish knives aren't hard to find.

Where do we chip in again to pay for Charlie and Barry's knives? They deserve it for putting this together. Thanks guys!

from past post I don't think it's poison hemlock, it's the tree, here's an old post where a member talked with Bill

I asked Bill Howard about this particular color, and he assured me there was green in the dye. He pointed out that hemlocks are red just under the bark, and that's the reason for the red in the dye. Green and red would combine to make the primary brownish shade, but the red definitely sticks out along the bolsters.
Don't put it in your mouth. Sorta like lead paint, that stuff was awesome. Now you can't have lead paint. My theory is, if your kids are running around the house chewing on the woodwork...you have way more of a problem than lead in your paint!

Cue slow violin and xylophone muzak as the inmates of Porchenberg Mental Asylum blissfully return to shuffling aimlessly about the dayroom....a small group gather at the window attracted by someone eagerly insisting they saw a Copperhead slither across the grounds into the Hemlock tree....two burly male nurses try "assist" him back to his "room"...in a snarling typhoon of violence one is deftly disarmed and crippled with his own nightstick...the other severely bludgeoned and locked to a railing with his own restraints.....keys in hand the inmate sprints like a gazelle down the corridor towards freedom....The other inmates stand watching.....Outside now armed with a fireaxe the inmate viciously hacks at the Hemlock tree....turning to the small group looking from the window ...the words are spat growling from the wild faced maniac..." You're all dooomed" chop.." Its"... hack.."green on the inside"...kachunk..."just beneath the bark"...

....wait....what's happening here?

Probably just the way I think...
This has become an obvious two horse race between Copperhead and Hemlock.
If I had voted for one of the other options, I'd switch to one of those two that I'd prefer... make my vote count for something.
But that's just me and I can respect others' resolve to stick to their vote.

I changed my vote to copperhead from sepia yesterday. I really was firmly in the smooth white bone camp, but its just not gonna happen this year, and thats ok.

I guess I'm just a little nervous about how the hemlock will turn out, and have always wanted to get my hands on a copperhead sawcut barlow, and it seems now may be my chance

I appreciate the updates and the efforts! My hope has been for Copperhead. BUT I don't think Hemlock will be bad if it wins, it's usually solid and it is attractive. My only concern is this, that it might be so dark that we don't see much of the color with deep, pronounced sawcuts.

Me, too.

Yup.

I'm holding out until I see the situation tomorrow. Maybe I'll jump; maybe not - depends on whether it matters.
Honestly, I'm hoping one falls off the conveyor belt before the dye bath...doesn't matter whether it makes it to the saw, it not. I'll give that misfit a good home
