I still like the idea of the sepia but the hemlock does sound interesting and since it's uncommon it would make it a little more special. Extra bonus that it has already been approved by Mr Howard.

“He [Bill Howard] warned that the handles [of a Hemlock knife] will show as very dark; like the Jigged ones we have seen!!”

Thank you for the peek behind the veil Charlie.

We are on the verge of creating a dark black/brown knife.

If Bill Howard, the only person who knows how the knife will look, went to the length of giving us a warning, maybe we should listen.

Sometimes there is a good reason why something has never been done before.

Charlie went on to say that "[h]e [Bill Howard] will do a pronounced/textured sawcut." That might be a reason why the darkness would be greater in Sawcut Hemlock.

I gotta hand it to you, you have made the most compelling case for copperhead. That’s a really good looking knife!

Bill seriously does not like to get into such fine detail with us!! I think If I discussed, or tried to discuss 40 to 50 degrees with him, he might not enjoy it to say the least - he'd rather play with his grandson!!
I do have some details to bring up though:
He's agreed that Hemlock will work with Sawcut, and he will do it for us, if it indeed wins the poll!!
He will do a pronounced/textured sawcut. He warned that the handles will show as very dark; like the Jigged ones we have seen!!
Also, the Fancy Bolsters are underway, and we will get pictures of the raw stampings soon!!
Sue will send them to me and I will post them right away!!
Thanks, and back to your regular program!!

Thank you for the update, Charlie, and your continued efforts. I also appreciate you putting up with all of us.

I am excited that Hemlock is doable, I think it will make for a very striking knife. A darkly textured sawcut surface with pops of excellent color in all of the right places - this will make for a rare treat and one we shouldn't pass up. We clamor often for something unique in our forum knives, this is an excellent opportunity to see it happen.

ETA: The pronounced sawcut is encouraging. This will hopefully alleviate the body of the knife looking too flat - which would occur with any color. In fact, it is the one complaint that I have with my 77 Barlow in Blood Red, it isn't very textured at all.

Charlie went on to say that "[h]e will do a pronounced/textured sawcut." That might be a reason why the darkness would be pronounced in Hemlock. The Dark Brewed voters probably cannot believe their luck. It looks like that is the color we are going to get after all.
And yet I'm thinking that hemlock, with the deeper sawcut, the peaks will wear nicely and lighten a bit while the troughs will stay darker, giving it a nice contrast, almost 3d like.

That looks nice, but ya know what? I think I'm in a crazy 'all or nothing' mood today. If I can't have white, then a deep dark Hemlock is where I'll move my vote.

Still pretty torn on which of the two front runners I’m leaning towards. I’m voting copperhead for now after looking at my 66 in hemlock. I think it may simply end up too dark, although the pronounced ridges is interesting.
I’ll be happy either way and if hemlock wins, it will be exciting to see how it turns out!

Thanks for your efforts, Charlie.

I just keep changing my vote for each colour. Then when the poll closes where it winds up is my vote. Like a roulette wheel.

looks as though Copperhead will prevail come Friday afternoon based on the trend of the previous poll

Rose and Thistle Custom Rose and Thistle Custom , everyone should read Charlie’s post regarding his conversation with Bill Howard. It is full of useful information that will help guide us. Both colors are appealing. Hemlock will be very black/brown, and we can all see that Copperhead will be coppery brown. We certainly have to acknowledge that much. Bill Howard himself “warned” that Hemlock “will show as very dark.”

I have more confidence in information coming from Bill Howard than any other source. Some might not like hearing how dark Hemlock will be, but we have to make a decision based upon reality, not wishes. His take on the color is much more valuable than our speculations.

Beyond that, it is simply a personal preference. Each one of us should just select our favorite using all the information we have available and with our eyes wide open. I am sure both dyes will “work” as intended. Just because he would do it does not mean that it will look good. He would probably dye it black if we insisted, after asking, are you sure?, which sounds like what he did here.

The question for each of us is simply which shade of color do you like better, extremely dark or average. Either way, we are going to end up with a nice knife thanks to Charlie.

Bill actually did say it will show dark ... not sure how you can say he didn't.

To quote ...

"He warned that the handles will show as very dark; like the Jigged ones we have seen!!"

If it's pretty much looking like hemlock or copperhead I don't think you could really go wrong with either. The copperhead reminds me somewhat of the old Imperial barlows (wich isn't at all bad). Either way it goes I'm sure it will be amazing.
