I just think if Bill thought it important to mention that it will show dark it should be considered, as that has been a worry for many of us from the start. Everyone has to make their personal choice I just didn't want that bit glossed over.

I don't even like Copperheads. Don't want one in my pocket. Besides cool song and all.
Opinel No.8 (Oak) took care of that one (that made the mistake of messing with one of my dogs one evening)
Hoping No.86 Hemlock will take care of this one

Even copperhead “shows dark” in the sawcut. All deep colors do. I believe that is all Bill meant. I believe the color on the sawcut hemlock will look very similar to the copperhead. The edges are where you will see the differences in color. Choose the color you like best on the edge - orange/brown (copperhead) or brown/red/green (HEMLOCK)

I don't mind copperheads; but not a fan of the smell (musk?).
I suppose it bears mentioning that I used to work with venomous snakes; and kept/bred some

I would hope that no one tries to gloss that over - it is the darkness of the dye that creates its appeal for some and aversion for others. However, it does need to be made clear, it is not a "black" dye - that can be asserted as fact. I wish I still had my Hemlock 66 so that I could photograph it properly.

It's worth noting that in some pics of my Blood Red 66, it looks black and then in others, it is obviously dark red. Same goes with the Hemlock Green - it's dark enough to be perceived as something that it isn't based on how it's photographed.

As you know then, Copperheads are stand-your-ground kinds of snakes. They don't usually slither off when confronted.
My dog had injured this one. I just put it out of its misery ... before taking my dog to the emergency after hours vet and dropping $1500 on antivenin, various other shots and an overnight stay.
Hemlock has been compared to trees, drinks and such along the way. Hope no one is offended by my Copperhead snake comparison.

That's the difficult part. Lighting and angles and so many factors play roles in how a picture looks. In just average lighting without trying to get lighting right the hemlock I have seen were extremely dark even more so than most of the pictures posted where they are trying to get the best photo they can.

One of the biggest factors for me on a the sawcut is contrast from flats to edges and ends and to me that's what is missing in the hemlock.

I agree and that is why this the great gamble. I have a pretty good idea of how it will turn out based on my personal experience as well as what I can see in pictures but I can’t say for certain because it has never been done before.

Which, in my opinion, is the greatest reason to pick it - it’s in keeping with the adventurous spirit that is often conveyed when discussing and choosing a forum knife. Why settle on a known variable when we could experience something new and one of a kind?

I'm looking forward to the forum knife whether it is copperhead or hemlock, but am hoping for a copperhead in sawcut. 20210623_202310_copy_816x612.jpgAnd with any luck, a legal one with real snakeskin scales. Although there are many more timber rattlers around my area. Luckily we can take one of each type, too bad I cant have one copperhead and one hemlock of the knife family!

Or white/ivory (sepia)

Some might say I'm beating a dead horse; but I have to amuse myself somehow to keep my interest. Besides, I have to hope that some of the many people that chose poorly will come to their senses and change their votes. Somebody needs to help them see the light (color).

Pàdruig Pàdruig , if we roll craps will you reimburse the rest of us adventurous gamblers?

Just a joke.

But seriously, a Copperhead Sawcut Barlow is not a common pedestrian item. I have been trying to get a Barlow in the family of Antique/Chestnut, Tan, Copperhead, or Saddle Brown for ages. They are almost impossible to find and cost a fortune when you do. They are all awesome, unique, and rare. Not many of us have one or will ever be able to get one. I am advocating for Copperhead over the others only because it is the sole remaining contender in the family. Each one of those colors is special. It’s not like we can run to the local hardware store and buy one of these exquisite gems. If that was the case, I would be more than happy to join you on your adventure without caring one bit if it was a whiff. However, we only have one shot this year. There is no guarantee that GEC will even do this again. Plus it is a unique Granddad Barlow so it will be a rarity regardless of the color.

Even though you feel like you have a pretty good idea of what the knife will look like, I would prefer not to engage in an experiment. Especially one that I have to pay for.

But, if we end up with Hemlock, I will certainly buy one and hope like hell that some colors peek through the darkness. I would hate to end up with a monotone knife that looks like Dark Blackish Brown Delrin after coming so close to a great knife.

I was also on team white/ivory. I feel your pain. Sepia is a great color but I was lucky enough to snag one of Charlie’s TC’s in January. Looking for some variety.

Cue slow violin and xylophone muzak as the inmates of Porchenberg Mental Asylum blissfully return to shuffling aimlessly about the dayroom....a small group gather at the window attracted by someone eagerly insisting they saw a Copperhead slither across the grounds into the Hemlock tree....two burly male nurses try "assist" him back to his "room"...in a snarling typhoon of violence one is deftly disarmed and crippled with his own nightstick...the other severely bludgeoned and locked to a railing with his own restraints.....keys in hand the inmate sprints like a gazelle down the corridor towards freedom....The other inmates stand watching.....Outside now armed with a fireaxe the inmate viciously hacks at the Hemlock tree....turning to the small group looking from the window ...the words are spat growling from the wild faced maniac..." You're all dooomed" chop.." Its"... hack.."green on the inside"...kachunk..."just beneath the bark"...

A short excerpt grom my latest novel
One Flew Over The Terminators Nest
This - is - what - we - need - for the tube sticker this year!
