Selecting Stag on traditionals...

I tried to use the information I learned in this thread in selecting this GEC 56 single blade. Of course, because these knives sell so fast, I did not have a lot of knives to choose from. I looked for stag with character and which extended as far as possible from bolster to bolster. I looked for a well matched pair. Also, even though the photos do not show it, the stag is nice and thin.
You done good Leslie !!!!!

Sorry for my ignorance, but why is this stag red? Is this a natural phenomenon or is the stag dyed red?

Case was known for its Redbone handles, and from time to time, it offered Stag (which was/is) dyed Red! They are fairly rare, and often faded, but this one has held up pretty well over the years (late 1950s for this one I am told.)

Stag handle material is still available dyed amber which finished will look similar to that Case. Just ordered some yesterday. Oops found this old pic of a California Coyote, more whiskey color than I was remembering too, not as red as the Case. I stand corrected.

That Amber Stag is some pretty stuff, Dave!!
I was checking out your site today!!:)

Why is the pile-side stag better looking? ;)
I still think that Case, at various times, put gnarlier Stag on the pile side, for whatever reasons, one of them being ease of shield installation. Here are a couple of 2-blade Stockman knives illustrating this.

GEC has stopped putting shields on most Stag. Why??

I got to pick this knife from about 12 knives (pictures). I like the gnarly canyons with islands. I think they are well matched sides. Not to thick or thin.
My one small complaint is that I like less contrast. I wish the ends had more brown in the bone. But I hope with time that will age into a creamy brown.

Apparently, the answer to the why above is "too many complaints about how a flat shield fits against a gnarly surface"!

I find this odd. My experience of GEC inletting was very positive indeed, all my Stag knives from them have gnarled or ribbed stag and I found they did a remarkable job of inletting the shields. I was dismayed when they decided to stop putting shields on all stag knives regard it as a step in the wrong direction frankly. Cutler's art etc. I haven't bought any stag from them since and don't see myself changing that. I like shields and I want them on most knives, particularly stag:cool:

Yup. Methinks people don’t quite understand the whole natural materials thing.

You and I both Will. Of course I don’t buy very many knives to start with, so it’s no big deal for GEC.

Without rehashing old photos of my GEC stag knives here is one I received today. They did an excellent job inletting this shield.

Here are a couple of Case XX 5299 1/2 Jacks with nicely inletted shields. Apparently they are very rare without shields!
The Stag on the shield side is not as gnarly as that on the pile side Red Stag - note the "A" blade (larger/higher) on the older example;#99 Red Stag A blade 3.jpg #99 Red Stag A blade 3.jpg #99 Red Stag A blade 4.jpg

Very nice Charlie. Too bad Case can't make them like that anymore. Maybe they could have a separate series like they do for the Case/Bose collaborations.
