self-defense folder?

Has it been your experience that the mods will step in on such a simple thing as OT posts that aren't offensive, at least to most?{QUOTE]

Actually, yes. I usually only frequent a particular subforum on here, and the mod of that forum does a great job of keeping things on track. The point is that someone creates a post looking for advise on one thing, and the whole thread get so off track that the majority of the post aren't answering the question. When that happens, I think it is, or at least should be, the mods job to get things back on track. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

Glad to hear there's a mod on that subforum really doing their job. It's a tough, thankless one...

Here's a little test one of my friends used on me:

Have a friend or relative stand about 15-20 feet away. Now have them walk towards you at a quickening pace. when they are about 6 feet away from you have them attempt to attack you and see if you can draw your folder fast enough to deploy the blade (of course be careful and a trainer would be recommended - or carefully tape the edge).

Most times it is damn near impossible because you are focused on defending the would be attack. That's why I suggest a folder that is comfortable enough to grip in the closed position to be used as an impact device first and foremost, then when you get the opportunity deploy the blade with the thumbhole/stud - wrist flick - spydie drop - anything.

I believe for a great EDC and something that fits the bill would be a Spyderco Endura, Tenacious, BM 710 (very slim profile makes it easy to grip closed for an impact device), BM 806 (same as 710 - slim profile but long blade), etc....

I've grown against wave features simply because it's not always a guarantee that it will open when you draw your knife - especially under stress or if you have been knocked to the ground.

Edit to add: A Microtech Socom Elite would be incredible as an impact device - it has a built in window breaker on the butt

You know it. I be smokin my ports to the filter... Spittin game like it's Skoal to the gutter... Bad guys shudder... 154CM cuts like butter...

So you're a rapper too? Charlie Mike you're a man of many talents, waving is probably your best. Can I have your autograph if you ever get famous? Kidding you man, the forum wouldn't be as fun w/o you being here. :D

Trust me, our moderators know their job - they've made that perfectly clear to me on more than one occasion! I have a huge infraction that may last longer than I live because of butting heads with a mod, right here in General Discussion. I learned my lesson! Lighten up they're watching. :)

I like that BM 806, I wish it came with a satin blade though. Very nice if you like the coated ones though.

Thanks for the heads up, but I'm not too worried about getting an infraction for voicing my opinion.

i realize this is a touchy subject... and i also fully comprehend that knives arent exactly the best self-defense weapons... but this is a topic that has always interested me on some level. hypothetically speaking, if you ever needed to employ a folder in a self-defense scenerio, which folder would you choose, and why?

Go to Youtube and check out knife reviews from nutnfancy. Most everyone trusts his judgement on tactical knives.

its winter i usually have my cold steel special forces shovel with me, if its a baddy with a gun i would prolly throw my sting, try to take them with me.

One more vote for the TR-4. I have recently had to use this knife for SD. io do not reccomend the experoence at all.
I am quite fortunate that I did not have to use it. To state it plainly, it is functionally superb and can dissuade an attacker on looks alone. Please do not make the mistake of assuming heft. It is miraculously light and agile. As always, not to have the need to defend is the most luxurious way to go. I myself was terrified when I had to flash this blade. It's not very likely to wound and I'm not interested in killing anyone. However, I will not be going first if SD/TR-4 is the only way to "resolve" any future accosting. I'm assuming I had my close call and am looking in all directions but the one that gives any reason to believe this is likely to happen twice in my lifetime. I'm a teacher and RE investor. I am Not interested in my collection becoming as bunch of weapons for carving up morons either. The truth is, I see my small batch of highly treasured blades as being disgraced by such ignorant usage. They are what I consider to be no less than my take on art.

Okay, no soapbox here.
In these dire moments, I would never have to think about which knife I would use for whatever I'm forced to do in my own defense. It's likely the sheer terror it inspires that saved me the agony of anything serious happening roughly one month ago.

Luck to all and cheers,
Kirsch

What a stupid thread to resurrect. It should have been in Prac Tac from the start. Now it's going into cold storage.

Dont look now, but last I looked I am the mod here. Not sure where the email went. :D.
