self-defense folder?

I have 2 of the best design in my pockets, right now:
- Emerson Blackhawk CQC11
- Emerson combat karambit
... Around the neck, a little back up : Emerson la griffe

balisong. the bad guys will be laughing so hard after you drop it that you can run to safety safely.

i tried saying something similar on the balisong board a while back... IMO balisongs are little more than toys

I agree with the larger the better - always carry one at the legal limit.

The main thing is understanding your own body mechanics, background, training. You can get some cheap knives of different blade styles and see how they work on different testing media based off the way your body moves.

In real life how sharp/narrow the tip is doesn't matter much but how sharp the edge is really does.

Tantos and bowie/persian blade shapes work best for me. Tanto does similar to a hawkbill/kerambit type of blade but doesn't hang up, while also thrusting/stabbing in a traditional manner.

Bowie/Persian is used in a different manner with punching push cuts in one arm movement then back the other way with a stab and keep repeating.

Cold Steel Ti Lite with the 6 inch blade...Quick to snap open and not too hard to carry, but still has plenty of reach.

I'd carry pretty much any pocket sword by cold steel, or large waved folder by emerson...

Or anything Charlie Mike would carry.

In fights involving edged weapons slashing movements have a higher chance of contact than stabbing would, so a large edge with a recurve would be more effective.

Ideally i'd carry a large karambit, but i know that i do not have the skill or training to get close enough where one would be useful... i really should start kickboxing again. i am lazy.

i realize this is a touchy subject... and i also fully comprehend that knives arent exactly the best self-defense weapons... but this is a topic that has always interested me on some level. hypothetically speaking, if you ever needed to employ a folder in a self-defense scenerio, which folder would you choose, and why?

Good question, I have to answer this two ways:

First, if you don't train with a weapon, you'll never be able to fall back on your drills so, I think this is where the standard "Whatever I have on me" answer comes from. So in effect it's a legitimate answer as long as the follow up is something to the effect, "I always carry knife A as EDC."

Last, I enjoy training martial arts, but since I do not train a martial art based on any type of particular weapon, I have to use rote memorization and influence it with the weapons available. I usually carry a knife (Spyderco Tenacious, Manix 2 or CS Rajah 2) and an impact device on the key ring, in this case a large sized joining link found in any hardware store, good for hammer strikes and use as a duster.

So with those two things in mind, the knife I love to have on me, law permiting is my Rajah 2, a folding Kopis/Khukuri hybrid with the strongest lock in the industry, is a very comforting choice.

Thanks to Lynn Thompson and Andrew Demko, I know I can hang 400 pounds on it, slice through a cowboy boot filled with Tri-Tip, Stab through a hood of a car and generally beat the living the daylights out of this knife without thinking of "what if's" as in the lock failing, not inflicting sufficient injury to cause incapacitation or the absolute best, intimidating the perp so that the next series of events unfolds as them leaving the situation for fear of losing a limb.

Really, a ball peen hammer in kydex shoulder rig, under a motorcycle vest? Why not just walk up to a police officer and ask for a felony arrest. :thumbdn:

Anything is better than fingernails if you have no other choice.

So whatever knife you happen to have on you at the time is fine.

I've been looking for such a knife since I became interested in Law Enforcement, now that I am a LEO, I have found such a knife :)

For a folder, I REALLY enjoy using and training with the Benchmade 806D2 AFCK. It is one of the few axis locked knives that can be carried tip down, tip up, left or right hand carry.

Link to BM: http://www.benchmade.com/products/806

Reasons it's a great Self Defense Tool:

1. It makes a great impact device if you don't have the time or dexterity to open it in a pinch

2. It can be opened multiple ways
2.a. It has a thumb hole opener
2.b. It can be wrist flicked open
2.c. it's ambidextrous

3. It has great ergonomics and shouldn't slip out of your hand very easily

A friend of mine at work (another deputy) has trained in Kali for a very long time, as for myself I was in Tae-Kwon-Do for over 6 years, so we have been putting our techniques into a pool of wisdom and been learning off of each other.

He carries this: http://www.tactical-life.com/online...pu-corto-warrior-weaponry/?thisissue=features

Reasons he carries this knife is because of all the reasons listed above for the 806D2 AFCK. Only difference with the Lapu Lapu Corto folder is that the big half moon looking thing on the thumb ramp is made so that if you can't open it in time, you just rub that ramp on your opponents arm, limb, clothing, etc.. and it will deploy the blade. It works, he tried it on me and left a 2-3 inch rash :grumpy:

People are assuming they will have time to react. ;)

If they have enough time to react then they have enough time to run or get away.

Going blade to blade with someone isn't the smartest choice....

If the decision has been made to pull the knife, then the time to run is passed, the time to be scared to death, the time death deal with fear for dying is definitely, extremely nigh.

You never pull a weapon then decide, hmm I should run and take one in the back. Unless your Carl Lewis then by all means run till your winded with a knife in hand and the wind at your back.

The question wasn't should I run from an attacker when common sense overrides fear for my life.

Try the Cold Steel balisong lookalike.. the Paradox, and grind down the studs allowing it to open more easily. Lots of blade there... And plenty strong.
