Selling a knife before you have it from the Maker. What is the rule here?

Interesting issue! I moved the off-topic posts from the original sales thread to this thread so the sale can continue without distraction.

I don't believe Bladeforums has any rules about flipping, even before taking possession. I don't believe we need any. The difficulties are exacerbated in this case by the seller being a relative unknown. But even if it were me selling under these circumstances, I wouldn't expect money before someone saw the item, either me or the buyer.

I consider it to be poor form to be selling a knife on the exchange BEFORE you have taken delivery of the said knife.
first, the seller is NOT the maker so does not guarantee the knife to be in pristine mint unused and without flaw condition.

I have no problem with anyone flipping a knife that they physically own.

The condition of a knife is not a factor in this case.
How can you sell something you never have?
What if the knifemaker croaks and you never get the knife that you presold?

My *opinion* (now that I searched and found the thread in question), is that water finds it's own level.

This sword is nothing a newbie would be looking into, hence, hardly worth a preventative rule. I dunno the going prices on RB's work, but if it's a three+ year wait, this may be a better 'deal' than suggested. (Assuming it all goes through.) And that's between the seller and buyer.

Sure wouldn't be me.

What if it was a Scott Cook Lochsa in holding position? I suspect there would be more than one potential buyer taking this chance. That's their deal.

All this said, there IS potential for fail. The question is, is BF the police? Sounds like too much government to me. I know your thoughts on THIS metaphor. :D

i dont ever sell something i dont have possession of, or list it for sale, things happen in life and ya just never know.

maybe have an agreement in place to sell once i am in possession, i dont think theres anything wrong with that, & can see where it can happen with knives, hard to come by customs especially.
