ludicrousness :

definition: The state or quality of being ludicrous.

I am posting this on several sites as I am truly looking for a solution to this madness. I want to have the best product I can produce for my customer but I am not sure I can pass these kinds of pricing on to the consumer. Please read the following!

I know you have seen posts by me recently on the forums before about quench oil. I have been on a serious quest to find a quality reasonably fast quench oil. I have considered everything within reason while on this search. I am looking for about 10 gallons of good quality quench oil and I don't really care who makes it, whether it is Parks, Houghton, or some other company. But in my opinion between $ 400.00 - $500.00 dollars for 10 gallons is out of this world!

The price of quench oil is through the roof! Here is a quote with the pertinent information removed for privacy reasons for the company making the quote. Note that the actual quench oil is only $40.51 but, the total is $202.50. The rest is fees, hazmat, and delivery. Almost $162.00 in fees. This quote is from a company 25 minutes from me. Look I don't mind a fellar making a profit but a killing is a bit ridiculous!

Has anyone got any leads on real quench oil for a decent price? I can't afford this stuff. Please if you do have current leads please either give me a link or names and numbers. I have been emailing the companies for weeks and most won't even bother to return an email! I guess business is so profitable they don't care who they wizz off!

, is that supposed to be a good point when getting ripped off! Anyone got a solution?

Call Maxim Oil. You can get 10 gallons of Parks #50 delivered for under $250. 817-293 4-OIL

I have had great success from 11 Sec Oil from McMaster Carr. HERE But you will get made fun of by the Parks Bullies around the neighborhood! :D And I am not even going to mention the "C" Word

It might be just me, but the way I read the order details is like this:
ITEM-----QTY-------------- DESCRIPTION ------------------ PRICE EA --------TOTAL----- DEL
1 ------ 5 GAL-------HOU 341010 HOUGHTON-QUENCH K -------$40.51--------$202.50-----1 WK

I'm not commenting on price, but if they are 25 minutes away I would drive over and pick it up if I bought it. Jess

I 2nd the McMasters-carr 11 second quench. A great oil that works fine on carbon steel knifes. I use it with 5160, 1095, 1080 and 15n20 and have tested my knives and it is very good. A bonus is it does not have to be heated and they ship at a fair price.

$40.51 x 5 is exactly $202.50
That's likely no coincidence.

Within driving distance, Heck ya, I'd have bought it already.

or ordered theh Maxim Oil Parks #50

I've spent more in a bar and had nothing but a headache to show for it.

Yep, no haz mat shipping fees if its not shipped? Nuther thing, remember the $162 in fees isn't going into their pockets. Its not a profit or a killing THEY are making. I absolutely agree that $162 in fees is crazy but its not the company, its THEY.

Whatever you end up buying, and from wherever you get it, keep in mind that this is not a "use once and throw away" material.

If you take care of it and use and store it correctly, you should be able to quench well over a hundred blades. Cost to quench should easily come out to less than 5 bucks per blade by the time you have to replace it.
And that's if you are using the expensive stuff. ;)

Passing that cost onto the customer shouldn't even phase them.

Besides, if you really look into it, using "cheaper" oils like canola/vegetable etc... usually ends up costing more in the long run due to shelf life and inconsistencies in results.

We just sucked it up and ordered parks 50 from maxim oil..5 gallons delivered for about $130 give or take..

Try Mcmaster-Carr, they have pretty good deals on quench oils. They carry 11 second and 28 second oils, between the two oils you can quench many types of steel.

Just buy the oil for Pete's sake! Even a $300 that's what... 2 knives!? Big deal... if floating your company balances on the cost of 2 knives, you need to reassess. Expect to pay $125 - $225 these days. That's just the way it is, bro. You don't buy shop gear with the intent of tacking the cost onto the next 100 knives. What happens after it is paid off... you going to drop your prices? You buy what you need to make good knives and ask what the market will bare. Suck it up buttercup. Quality engineered oil will last your knifemaking career.

That quote you posted was priced per gallon.... $40.51 per gallon.

I got this email this morning when I opened my email and I was in a hurry when I posted this, I stand corrected. That is a quote for per. gallon price. My bad!!!! It still hurts the pocketbook!

Jeebus Rick your hurting my feelings, :eek:That's poor ass buttercup to you! :concern:

I am sorry if it sounds like a whine but I whine every time I fill my tank too!!!!!!!!!

I have no clue but what makes a quench oil a quench oil? At work I have access to all sorts of industrial oils. Mobilgear medium/heavy medium delvac 1300 and transformer oil to name a few. would any of these work or does it have to be special purpose?

Lol... I'm just messin.... but if you are that hurting, buy a cheap container and some canola oil. I would suggest putting the 10gal quenchtank project aside, bud.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure Rick and the Count are right on this one. Do the math and divide 5 gallons by ???? knives...

Plus, you gotta admit "suck it up, buttercup" is an awesome phrase. I use it often, along with "nut up or shut up" and "wassa matter, pancake batter?" "man up or clam up" and "no balls, no blue chips".

My kid thinks I'm an idiot, but what does she know? :D

11 second oil is NOT going to quench 1095 to the degree it needs. Any oil less than Parks #50 will be a compromise, and you would be better off using 1084 steel if you can't get the Parks. If you really mean you want the best there is at this time for 1095. Those who suggest 11 second oil. 1095? you're fooling yourselves.

Guys I have finally sit and read all this and I know you are right!

You see here is the problem. I did construction from the time I was fourteen and that is official start time. I started working with my Dad when I was only big enough to tote tools to him. He taught me how to fabricate and weld. The only thing he didn't teach me was how to make enough at the construction game to retire when the body is too beat up and unable to do it anymore!

You see I learned early in the construction game," buy the best tools available for the job, cause if you buy cheap, it's going to cost you more in the long run"!

But you see ole buttercup is beginning to slow down and his income has slowed even more!

I have got to figure out if I can sell enough blood to pay for this. In the meantime I may have to downsize my quench tank.

I got into making knives for three reasons. I like building knives, it keeps me busy, and hopefully too make a little money to supplement the beans! So far I have had plenty of the first two. So it's time to step up to the A game, and see if I can add a little of the last one of those three things!

C Craft Customs............. but you can call me Buttercup :D:stupid:
