Additionally, when cutting against an edge-damaging backing material like a ceramic plate or rope wrapped around a pipe, only the peaks will contact that material and dull, while the interior of the serrations will remain sharp.
I've found this reason to be the biggest pro to serrations for myself. And why they tend to be popular with mechanics and people who can't be picky about hitting metal or ceramic with their edge. while it can instantly dull a plain edge, it only dulls the very tip of the serrations.
but I can get around it usually and no longer even own anything with serrations.
