Severed a tendon in my hand last night.

I hate to hear about that. Buffers and Knives really have no business being together. You can get cut with a knife and you can get hurt with a buffer, but when you mix a knife and a buffer together........ You can get killed.

Be careful and heal up soon.

Robert

Sorry to hear Nathan, glad it wasn't worst.
Physical therapy is a pain in the ass, but crucial to getting optimal use back.
Good luck in your recovery.

Thank God you are in Canada: my severed thumb tendon cost me 10k (WITH insurance @ $560/month) The important part is how hard you work on physical therapy.

I hear that, however - I also have to get additional disability & medical insurance for everything the system doesn't cover (chiropractic, physiotherapy, etc.) at $240/month (I pay half, company pays half). I also pay $1600-2000/month in taxes (income tax, employment insurance, canada pension plan - different names for the same thing).

Nothing in life is free. One way or the other you will pay. The only thing the Canadian system does is to put everyone in the same line, regardless of how much they pay. If you are unemployed or poor it is a great system, the catch is that you are supported by everyone who is employed & productive.

*rant off*

Thanks everyone for the well-wishes, I'll try to post a pic of the culprit tomorrow.

have a good one.

Nathan

ouch!!! sorry to hear about the slice and dice. I am a clutz myself and have had my fare share of traumatized flesh. including nerve damage to my left index finger. I have learned through many hours working in a slaughterhouse, KEVLAR gloves are your best freind. IMO. oh yeah......pics:)

Man that is tough! I hate to hear about any maker getting hurt. Hope that your recovery is quick and complete. I guess it is a risk we all take and it only takes one second for a memorable accident.

Something we all should take a few minutes and think about is what would happen if we had a similar serious shop accident and how would we stabilize the situation and then get help?

Sorry to hear this Nathan... I hate buffers. They scare the heck out of me. Do exactly what your PT says!!!!

Sorry to hear that I have heard it before the buffer is the most dangerous tool in the shop

The prices we pay for our passions are often high.
You injury is one of the many reasons I don't polish blades. Blasted or sanded only around here.

That bites man (and deep too!). At least it was your extensor- you can still flex into a fist- what do you need a middle finger for anyways:confused:!! Get better and take your rehab seriously, and see a massage therapist (like I want to be) for the scars!

P.S.
I'll take the knife- I have not seen anyone else post for it and now that it is damaged goods (or is that you?). ;)

If you have any problems finding a surgeon, Victoria Maseur at St Vincents East in Birmingham AL is known for repairing what other surgeons fix. She is one of the best in the nation. Only works on the hands, will not go above a carpal tunnel fix. I would be glad to get your her number, a lot of my family members have had great success with her and her practice.

Good luck on the healing process, if you have future problems, she can fix it.

I have cut two of mine. You shoud have surgery as quick as you can.every hour you wait will cause you greif.when cut the tendon's start to shrink, and this makes getting full use of your hand much harder. I waited five days way to long. My finger only works 50% know.

Yeah, if you don't take this seriously, you may never move those fingers again.

Hope you didn't hit the nerves. I sliced through the nerve in my left forefinger about ten years ago. Had it re-attached but still have a slightly numb feeling in the finger. Nicked the tendon, but didn't sever it.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I'm going for surgery in a couple hours, wish me luck! Don't worry about the rehab, I'm marrying a scottish redhead. She puts me in my place when I need it. I won't get away with slacking off.

I posted pics in a seperate thread, figured it would be easier that way.

Have a good one,

Nathan

Sorry to hear, get well soon. I cut a gash into my palm some years back, but had no tendon damage. All I saw was red muscle past the skin and fat layers. I think I was layed off from work at the time but luckily still had my COBRA coverage. Doesn't seem likely anymore but I hope we get a better government health care system here in the States. We have a 10% unemployment rate and it's not all lazy people, but we all get sick...
