Hey Clich, just a question I have for you,
Why do you like the BK5 so much? I have never used one before, and I know it's not a bad knife, but with it's design and shape it doesn't seem to be the "perfect" camp knife. You are always saying it does everything very well, and I just can't see how it does that.
not to sound snobbish, however i realize this will, you answered your own question when you said you didnt handle one. I was just like so many others when it came to the bk5. It looked OK, but i couldnt justify buying one, since they are just about if not more than the bk9. That was until i ran out of beckers to buyand actually derekh hooked me up with one seeing how i had a spare bk9, and he had a bk5. We traded and once it was in my hand it was the perfect fit.
As for why i believe its the best camp knife, well thats just personally preference in the camp. See as much as i like the bk2 and how it indestructable, its just doesnt do everything that i would need come camp time. Would i like to have a bk2 if i was in a survival situation? you damn skippy. But that just because i wouldnt have to worry about breaking it while doing what i need to do to survive. But the bk5 whittles better, which is important when it comes to shelter/trap building, the bk5 is a better skinner and slicer for the game that you trap, it makes tighter curls on a featherstick for better and faster fire ignition. Its also light enough you lose it on your belt and dont feel it when you have a bunch of miles under your feet. I think i touched on everything, but could have missed something. Anyway hope that helps
Oh yeh and it chops too, and is the sharpest knife i own.
How does the BK5 chop compared to a BK7 or BK9? I have seen your video, but you didn't do a lot of chopping with it though it did seem to do very well. It was a well done brief review/ comparison of the BK5.

there was ALOT more to that video, the brother in law lost ALOT of footage. That video was what i could salvage. It chops better than the 7, not as well as the 9 because of the weigh. but it does outchop the 7 in my opinion since the 7 does have that much more weight to giv it an edge, and the bk5 is lighter and faster. so what you lose in weight, you gain in inertia.
yes sir i did. dunno if you the first to notice, but your the first to say somethingI'm in, thanks for the chance. What do I win again? I didn't see a prize listed in the OP...
Seriously though, your BK5 is like perfection. Is it just me, or did you change the shape of the handles and remove the pomel extension?
Well thank you for your input, I think the BK5 is the next Becker. One last question, is micarta worth the $40? I am a little hesitant to buy them since I could put some tennis grip on the handles for about $5.

well, that is a personal preference i cant answer for you. some hate micarta, they dont like how they feel and feel they have "hot spots". Some hate grivory and think its too slick and that micarta is one of the BEST upgrades you can get. Im of the latter. I love micarta. tell you what, pick yourself up a set, when they arrives sand them with some 220 (they come a little rough and its a good idea to smooth out the edges) and if you dont like em ill buy em from you so your not out the $40. that is of course, if you end up being in the former group that hates micarta.
Alright, well thank you for giving me a back up plan if I don't like it. I will see if it fits the bill when I order the BK5, but I think I will buy it sooner rather then later.

I shaped em for more of a forward grip since i lost weight in the rearAh HA! I thought I noticed that, but the angle of the shots made it hard to know for certain.
So it looks like you kept the front half of the handle the same, and then moved the rearward bulge back a bit whilst also removing the extension. Am I close?
Do I win?
And man, the handles on there look gorgeous. Did you do anything under the scales to make sure there isn't any corrosion?
one more thing, clich - could you do a quick description of your patina process? I know I read it here somewhere. Could you post the link? I won't try to do the exact same thing, but it's always good to know the different ways you can stain a blade.
