SF Get Together Directions & Details

While I sit on Kodiak Island wishing I was with you guys, can you at least give us a run down on how the evening went?

Anxiously awaiting.......

I am worn out, many knives handled, bags of knives.

Those speed tech protos were pretty cool...

A little bit of everything.

Thanks Joe and you all, about 15 of us?

Good people the Forumites.

Had a good time. It was like a living, breathing version of the Forums plus you could touch the goodies.
Thanks Joe for setting this up.

What a blast! What a gang!

What a *hellacious* pile of killer cutlery!

Man...some truly unbelievable stuff. One-off Black Clouds including a short sword, a 40something-yr-old Randall, same guy (dammit, can't recall name) brought a Ruana Bowie that was completely out-there.

I finally got to see an HI Khukuri, a 15" Ang Khola. By *god* what a sweet bit o' steel. Or rather, bits, the small blade and the burnisher were just as good.

The forthcoming Speedtech folders will be DAMN fine blades for the price, the prototypes were awesome.

And on, and on, and...arg. We gotta do this again in a few months...

Great time! Thanks everyone for coming!

Some high points for me: the Ruana bowie, Andre de Villiers damascus & ivory folder, 15" HI AK, Ernie Mayer sword & 8" fighter, MD Panther & Lab Rat, the Outsider, RJ Martin Q36, and of course the collection of Speed-tech folders (non-liner-locks). Not to mention our misc items: Krill lite, 3-LED lite, photon lights, rigger-coat sticks, MD composite sticks, etc.

My suggestion is to wait a few months so we can all gather some new goodies, then meet again! If we can find a place in SF or the east bay, I might be able to line up a great participant. My only requests are: 1. There be beer available. 2. Good beer, not swill like Bud. 3. There be food available. 4. We be able to meet in a small private room, so we can feel more comfortable waving our knives around. It would definitely not have worked, meeting out in the public area of the restaurant.

Next time, it's on the weekend, maybe up north!

I had a great time…it was nice to finally put some faces behind the names here on the forums. There were a lot of friendly guys who know their stuff about knives. Thanks Joe T. for setting it all up…and for the sharpening tips. I was able to see and handle a lot of knives so I got a bit of information overload at the moment, but here's a few bits and pieces of what I remember for those who couldn't make it…

The Speedtech prototypes were very nice…keep an eye out when they hit the market. Plus Jim O'Young is a great guy to talk to and it's nice to see a maker look for input from users to improve his knives.

Milan, you have to try and get a picture of your Biohazard 1 up on the forums for others to see. It's kind of hard for me to describe, but if a Klingon owned a folder, this would be it.

Steve Harvey sure has a nice collection. Seemed like he was pulling out one cool knife after another. I was impressed by the David Boye customs with the etched blades.

I got to see Joe Talmadge's TKK by Trace Rinaldi. After handling it, I think I'm going to have to order one…

Someone had their Mad Dog knives out. I heard so much about them, it was nice to finally see one.

Seems like the folders of choice among this group were Sebenzas, BM Axis', and Calypso Jrs.

That's all I can think of right now. There was a lot to see from a handful of people in one room. Maybe others can post about anything I left out.

Joe- Thanks for setting up the event. Had a GREAT time!

Thanks to everybody who came. Nice to associate a face with a name and seeing all of the neat hardware. Did you see the look on the busboy's face and his reaction when he took a gander at all the steel laying on the table?

And thanks to everyone for giving honest opinions and inputs on the SPEEDTECH products. You are the people who will be responsible for our success and we really value what you have to say. Picked up a wealth of good information last night.

Let's do it again real soon!

Stay sharp!

BIOHAZARD!

HELL ya, that thing is SICK I tell ya...the perfect folding companion to The Outsider.

Who makes it, what's his website, will be make one stretched a bit, out to around 6" or so...SWOON!

Jim March

The Biohazard 1 was made by Steve Ryan. I don't have pictures, but I'll try to contact Steve. Hopefully he has internet access and will be able to talk more about the knife and his future plans. It is one helluva folding fighter, very strong and wicked, sort of like an over-sized Civilian with major thrusting capability as well. I'll post after I talk to Steve.

I guess I wasn't watching this thread closely enough because I almost missed a great chance to make a perfect a** of myself, but thank goodness for the edit feature

Man I should have drove the 230 miles to get there. I would have if I had an idea that someone would pull out a 40 year old Randall and a Ruana Bowie!!!!!!!! They are great. Who had it and do you want to sell or trade them?

It was a great get-together. Nice to put faces to the names. To my surprise, Joe Talmadge is not a grizzled old curmudgeon with a beer belly, but a very pleasant, young guy. He was even nice enough to test out a few of my liner locks non-destructively!

All kidding aside, if was good to meet folks, see their knives, and talk "shop".

Ya see, I knew this would have to happen one day after the Knifenugen thing. I just thought it would be called the "Jim March/Mad Dog/Dale Seago Invitational" held at Jackson Arms. Really.

Hopefully I can make the other meetings.

Place wise, a decent place w/ pizza & bear is the Front Room Pizza Place in the Richmond District of SF. The parking is funky, not the best but could be worse.

Err...we should avoid the city of SF due to the at-least-theoretical 3" limit. Or at the very least, don't bury the meet *deep* in town so we have to transverse miles of it. Just a bit off the freeway is cool.

Somewhere on the North Peninsula, Daly City, Colma or something might be better?

Jim March

I really wanted to make it but there was no way I was going to be able to make it from work in SF to SJ in time. I even threw a bag of goodies in the car in case there was a way I could do it.

I'll make the next one for sure. Hopefully Doc Walt can make it too!

At its very peak, 12-15 people.

Jim, good point about SF. If we can't find a place in SF or the east bay, we can always do it at Vito's again. This time we'll make it a weekend so everyone can show up.

Joe

If a bunch of people ever feel like getting out of the city and into the country. Let me know, there are places up here in Placerville, CA east of Sacramento that I'm sure would work fine, or a BBQ at a private barn... local accomodations aren't bad either. If not I'll try to drive to the (gulp) city, I don't like it down there tho. After reading all the comments I missed an education.

Darn, sorry I missed it all...WHO MENTIONED IZZY'S?? I love that place!
Oh, I can't hink of any lace in Daly City, as I live here, and there's not much to see...
...As far as I know, S.F. doesn't have a folder limit law (at least in the Municipal Police Code) BUT parking is a pain in the butt...though the Front Room in the Richmond does have some good grub...
