SFNO vs. ASH-1 - and do I still need a SFNO?

Back when the Ur SFNO were still a rare and coveted blade, I scored a user from Heavy late one night. If you are willing to pay S/I both ways you can borrow it for a try out.

resinguy, first, what is a "Ur" version of a Busse? I searched it and came up with one more reference, but it was still unclear to me in either context. I realize I may be revealing myself as a hopeful Busse-dolt by asking!

Second, what a tremendously generous offer! Regardless of whether I want to give a "Ur" a spin upon being informed what that is, I am very thankful!

This is 100% what this community is about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And so unexpected. Let alone unsolicited. This is what really surprised (and frankly, amazed is actually not too strong a word here) me about this forum. In this day and age, to trust a stranger with an item of significant value, when the two have never actually met and shaken hands, is nothing short of astonishing. And to be able to do it with confidence. And that is works. Pretty special.

Thanks, again, resinguy.

Ur = original

Before Busse significantly ramped up production (2007/2008?) the number of blades out there was small. The SFNO was out of production when I came along and was highly desirable on the secondary market.

I take it then that Ur is probably a txting and perhaps a 'net thing in general and not specific to Busse Forum. Thanks resinguy. I am sure that is something I should have known. Got it!

I was wondering when production went up and now I know. Thanks. This leads to other questions regarding the "why nots" of reissuing some of those pre-ramp up iconic or otherwise highly sought after designs. But that is a subject of another thread! The currently established Busse business model is an odd sausage of a thing, indeed, and sometimes a real head-scratcher to this litter runt of a piglet. But undoubtedly there is a method to the madness and I am confident that it is all part of the master plan :p!

SFNO LE received! WOW. A natural beauty as well as outlaw! I will post pics this weekend for those interested. My thanks to all for advice and input and a big thanks to Mike for supplying this fantastic knife in trade.

I believe my new big problem will be deciding whether to strap on the SFNO or an ASH when I head for the sticks. A good problem to have! That's Busse for ya'!

Definitely one of the best Busses ever.
And there are only 300 like it.

Hey Duramax, Do you remember the thickness of both the LE and CG SFNO from the 2004 run?

I do not but ........... I have calipers and the Busses so stand by :-)

SFNO Le .2210 at ricasso
CG SFNO black coating .2510 at ricasso

Thanks DuraDude! I thought it was the other way around. I have a 2015 Cerakote SFNO that is thick and I like it, but felt like I would use it more if it was a little lighter. Now I know I have to get an LE!! Which is a blessing and a curse to the wallet, but at least I can stop hunting for a .22 CG SFNO that never existed.

Happy to help :-) There’s also the full flat grind SFNOs floating around out there. I forget what thickness they are , I’ve seen coated and non coated ones. As for the CG saber grind some are even a little fatter , I’ve seen .265ish ones.

I can't believe I have not gotten one of these until now. "Gold standard" is right. This knife and the ASH-1 are basically custom designed and fitted for me - 'cept they weren't.

I find it interesting that the old SF handle is considerably shorter on the SFNO than on the NMSFNO. I like the handle on the NM', but thought it was a bit long for even my XL hands, and I had to move my grip around to find the right fit for the grip and task at hand. I was curious why it was designed that way, and decided that for me it was inferior to the ASH grip, which was just the right length and locks my hand in place in a perfect grip. I assumed it would be the same on the SFNO. Nope! it is much shorter and in fact is almost of identical length to that of the ASH. With similar results! A different but perfect handle and grip as well. I have never seen this pointed out and discussed, but it probably has been. I assume it was lengthened on the NM' in order to help with the balance, which it undoubtedly does, but it loses that locked in feeling in the process and one has to "hunt" for what one wants. Well, at least I do. Had I known this about the SF handle on the SFNO I would not have hesitated to hunt one down and without the hand wringing.

Heresy for me, but I am seriously wondering if I am going to like her just a tiny bit more than my beloved ASH family. NOT that I intend to let any ASHs go, mind you! No way. Choices amongst perfection is about as good as it gets! I think it will take some serious beating on to determine the "winner" between the two!

Between the improvements in balance point, grip feel and security, and lastly, aesthetics, I really think that the SFNO is the better of the mighty pair of Outlaws (SFNO and NMSFNO). But, that is playing in the big leagues, rarified air for sure, so that is no knock on the NM' at all. Great knife, too.

There are those, but also plain coated and satin versions out there.
Thank you. I will resist the immediate urge to locate one despite my deep love and affection for a full flat grind, this saber grind must be given a full and complete chance first. Gotta see how she cuts and sharpens before I go crazy. Not being a collector and all! (This is what I keep telling myself anyway!)

IMO the SFNO LE is the best all around. The saber grind adds durability while the .22 allows for a nice edge. So I think your good to go having the LE and willing to use it. I just stash my LE away and admire its beauty once in awhile lol :-) I don’t have the walnuts to use mine lol :(o_O:p

So.... In a grab bag, I got a SFNO ceracoated with the Flying Tigers shark... The ceracoat flaked very every time she was used. I took her to the woods for a long weekend and I had ceracoat in my food. LOL When I got home, I attempted a strip job. Attempted is the key word in that sentence! Anyway, that knife always seemed really thick to me. Were any of the INFI ones thicker???
