SFNO vs. ASH-1 - and do I still need a SFNO?

Your welcome, happy to share them :) it goes in spurts. Body is just about finished, -paint. Next mechanical.
I’ve had way too many car journeys then lol :) But your right, for me it’s always been more fun redoing the car. Taking a car in that needs work. Then Having the vision of mentally seeing the car done and doing it. These are my last two full projects lol. Next car I’ll get finished and then tweak it to be mine :) :)
Ford !!!!!!! Ahh that’s ok I had a 69 Mach 1 and my buddy still has his 71 Mach 1 429. And the 70-71 cuda is a fav of mine :) Always wanted one !! many moons ago I bought the drivetrain from a challenger to one day put in a cuda. Dang pontiacs got in the way lol.

Buts cars are like your orig question, SFNO or ASH1. Pontiac or ford or Chevy or Chrysler ???
Personally I’d own each, all for their own reasons. If it lumps, shakes and guzzles & spits fuel while turning rubber, I’m in...... American muscle !!!!
Guess that’s why I like Busse Combat, from their Infi to sr101, from custom shop to Combat grade. To me they all have their beauty, they all can be used or admired and just the gold standard for hard use knives.
As with cars what I like about knives is they bring together good people. I’ve got a lot of great car buddies. And thanks to BF and Busse Knives and CPK I’ve found some great knife people too :)

Sorry I got a little long winded lol,
I can talk blades and cars loooooong time lol :)
The one I always thought was the Pontiac Grail was the '73 Super Duty 455...Never could seem to catch one:(

1973 SD TA is a rare bird !!!! If I recall the #’s are 73 manuals and 182 autos. SD formulas are even more scarce !!!!
I came close to one a looooooong time ago. I did have a complete 74 sd455 engine that I ran in a 1975 TA with a Doug Nash 5sp. I still have a set of heads around here somewhere lol.

You are most welcome, brother! It was a great trade; and I’m glad to send her to a good home!

I am glad to hear that you still feel that way, BK86!

A trade is best judged by the parties' respective levels of satisfaction, and when both parties are very happy a great trade has been accomplished. I think that all too often one or both parties are trying to end up with the better half of the bargain. Probably not the best goal on BF!

Yeah that’s the ONE right there !!!! I love that knife ! it’s the knife that brought me to finding Busse Combat :)
Congrats !!!!

Right?! Thanks, duramax.

Interesting that you say that, because it is the one that first caught my attention as well. Then I got here and saw the ASH-1, and kinda put her on the back burner - even questioning how relevant the SFNO was after the NMSFNO (and all the more so if one also had an ASH-1) was out there. But icons are often iconic for a reason, right? I challenge anyone who likes a knife of that general type to hold a SFNO LE and not want one, and want one badly. My other fave, the ASH-1, fulfills a very similar role, but I think the ASH presents just a bit more of a niche-type appeal. Some will "get it," and some will not.

I get both. I got both! Ha!!!

Hi Ken,

Could I trouble you for a picture of an ASH1 next to that lovely SFNO LE... spine-to-spine perhaps? The text descriptions in this thread (both yours and others) of these two knives have almost convinced me of the error in my ways.... I love my ASH1 LE and have previously dismissed the SFNO as redundant in my own "collection of users," even though it's a knife that immediately appealed to me. I think I'm ready to start searching for a lightly used example.... just need to justify the need!

Thanks, Mark.

Mark, I completely understand - obviously! Your ASH-1 LE should be a middy ASH, right? If so, do you want me to do the shot/s with my SFNO LE and an ASH-1 Middy? - or with a Skinny or a Fatty? Or one or more of each? Happy to comply upon confirmation!

After having and now using both, I am convinced that they are not entirely redundant. Does one actually need both? - No. Either will do the job of the other. But perhaps just not quite as well. Close. But not. I am of a mind that my hand likes the ASH-1 slightly better, and it is a tad lighter and a tad more compact - but not by much (comparing to a Middy, of course). But the feel in hand will naturally differ from person to person. I am inclined to carry my ASH-1 Skinny or Middy for long humps in the sticks, but if I had to be absolutely stuck in the middle of nowhere or in the apocalypse with but one knife, I would probably lean toward the SFNO at this point.

Awesome Ken, thanks in advance!

Yes, my ASH-1 LE is the mid-fat version, around .22 thick stock I believe. I'm really most interested in the blade silhouette and handle differences, so any thickness will do.... your choice!

The SFNO LE is one that has always haunted my desires... and this comparison to one of my all time favorites (ASH-1) has brought it to the forefront once again! I did have a pristine NMSFNO LE for a while, and while it was an amazing knife, I found a Basic 8 LE covered the 8" niche perfectly for me, at a much lighter weight (and was much easier to beat on than the perfect tigerhide/satin beauty). I *might* also have a few Gemini variants that were more likely to get used, and a non-CBT competition finish Hell Razor, so the lovely NMSFNO safe queen has moved on... and I really like the idea of meeting her "little sister" :D

Well, I obviously feels ya', man. And and always, the LE is likely the best of the best versions, IMHO (I fancy an ASH-1 LE, myself. Quite a lot - but sadly cannot go it right now. Sadly.). I will take some shots for you of the blade silhouette and handle broadside, as well as some profile handle comp shots, of all three comping vs. the SFNO LE (my skinny ASH is a home highly hand-shaped profile, the middy is a factory/CS hand-shaped mag, and the fatty is an untouched scalloped mag). Might be Friday or Saturday, but I promise to get to it!

Happy to help ya's!

Cheers!
