Whittlers, esp. split-springs, are just about my favorite pattern, but it seems essential to me that one of the secondary's be a coping blade.

Top Case 6383 is well used.
Bottom 6383 is unused.
Reviving this thread.
Let's see some honest, worn knives too.

Here's a knife that fits the definition of a whittler; Three-blade, split/wedged backspring!
IXLStockWhit.jpg

But with a punch and a spey blade, it is equipped like a Stockman:eek: ; but with the equal end pattern and a spear master it's more like a Cattle knife:confused: ?? A Stowhattle??:D

This pattern needs to be brought back into production! Forum knife 2012?!

I'm partial to having a coping blade on a 3-blade whittler too. I'm glad this thread came back up as I've been wanting a couple more whittlers and this thread has got some beauties.

I can't decide if my mini copperhead is more like a half whittler or a pen knife, but whatever it is, I really like that little knife. Right now, it is mad at me and hiding in some dark cranny. I'm pretty sure it hasn't run away from home though.

I think that is an excellent idea for a 2012 forum knife!!

Here are three of my custom whittlers. Top is a one by a un-named maker who will not admit to making it and it has blue jean micarta scales on it with some 01 blades. :D Middle is a Jerry Barlow whittler that I just love done up also in O1 steel for the blades and whale bone scales. This is a really great knife in my opinion and has a great ole timey feel to it. I'm planning on getting another one of these from Jerry before too long. Last at the bottom is a Don Morrow split back whittler with some amber jigged bone scales. Flawless knife and for a me a real hard one to open. It broke a nail just getting that main blade out for this pic!

EDIT: Finally found my thread on the Morrow Seahorse Whittler. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=797740

I think this is the closest I have to a whittler... well, I also have a half whittler.

I only have 4 whittlers and two of them are Remington R14 pattern carpenter's whittlers with 3 blades arranged in a stockman configuration in a whittler frame and a small clip and coping blade instead of the stockman's spey and sheepsfoot. They look like this:

I have to say, even though it isn't a whittler that mini copperhead makes a wonderful half-whittler.

I like the Whittler as it has less of a handful of blades feel that the Stockman often does. Mind you, I'm far from knocking the Stockman.

Böker Germany do a very reasonable Whittler in carbon, the Pen and Cope blades are nice and thin and the Master blade well sized all in a compact 3.5" serp frame. Tapered backspring nor split though. Well made and not too dear.

Here's a Parker special. A Seahorse pattern whittler, marked JDC, Kane, PA with real ivory scales. Brass liners.

Here are a couple of split springs, a 4 blade and a nice little carved pen, all German. The cracked swell center (I dropped it ;''-( is a WH Morley and sons, the sleeve board is a Garland, the 4 blade is marked GEO Rogers and Co. and the pen is F.A. Koch & Co.

Best regards

Robin
