Photos SharpByCoop's Gallery of Handmade Knives

And a special mention from me for Jose DeBraga. I once owned one very similar to the one above - and one of my life regrets has been letting it go. What a piece-

I am fortunate to live nearby to Paul Rohaly. Paul is a senior engineer for an industrial electronics and mechanical supplier, and also has a good eye. He has worked with Lamont Coombs from Maine for years.

Lamont has also learned from Maine sheathmaker Chris Kravitt, and has learned VERY well. These are Lamont's work.

Paul delivered these knives to me early in July and it's taken me a while to get to them. It was worth the wait. Lamont has great skill in grinding bevels and sculpting handles, and the photos do them justice. They ARE this nice.

You can see them for yourself in Marlborough Mass this Sunday at the NCCA show.

A worthy post!

Here's some shots I've finished over the past couple of weeks.

This incredible folder is owned and was displayed in its own thread by collector Jon Brand. It's one of Don's Mastersmith test knives. (How rare to use a folder as an ABS test knife!)

This is a little different than the other shot. Potato/potahto... :)

Isn't Mr. Hanson versatile? this one hasn't been shown. Yet.

Timothy K. Steingass is making quality knives and sheaths, and selling them on this forum often. He's upped his game having me shoot them professionally and submitting them, as well as showing them here. Tim makes custom gunstocks as well as knives. (Personal photo site - Click here)

That stag folder by Don is just amazing! a real user piece! and I love how you show off the amazing wood that Tim is using on those fixed blades. :) Great work Coop.

Love that stag Hanson folder and this Steingass fellow is turning out some very clean knives with very crisp lines. Nice.

Yet again, very nice pictures of very nice knives. I love this thread.

The contrast between that "all out" damascus/mammoth Hanson, and the understated "Stag" Hanson is incredible. Versatile indeed.

Keep 'em coming!

Kind regards,

Jos

Thanks Coop for showing the other version. I forgot to post that up myself. That other hanson is perfect pocket carry. I now only have a spyderco to carry and I need to get a variation of these babies soon.

The Rohaly-Coombs collaborations are truly amazing, Coop, and
the full drama of their bold beauty is displayed so well in your pictures.

I actually felt a surge of Adrenaline when I saw them, only to be intensified
when the sheaths suddenly came into view!

All the best,

Thanks David! Both those guys will be pleased to read this.

You'll notice I left the backgrounds the same on them. It was easier for me, and they are SO dramatic, no exta visuals (or distractions) were needed.

This, Coop, was probably one more reason that I liked this
set of images so much!

After looking through this whole thread, i say... screw vintage knifes, and get a dam damascus folding knife. Anyone know where i can get review unit knifes? Sorry for being so new, im very active on other forums FYI.

What are "review unit knifes"??

Some free advice: watch your language, have a look around, see how things are done around here.

Welcome to bladeforums.

Well as im a more proficient user of other forums i get things to do reviews on, and that helps that person's company go farther and hopefully sell more of their product doing that review. I really just cant believe the designs of some of these knifes, do you guys even use them, or are they just art? I also cant believe the $500-3000 price for em.

Perhaps you could find a better place to express your disbelief - maybe start your own thread in the custom forum to vent your incredulousness at design and price? This really isn't the thread for it.

Brandon,

Being a proficient 'user' of another electronics forum does not qualify you to come in here first with loud proclamations and misunderstandings. Those knives you see that are probably NOT users, and probably worth MUCH more than $5000, have waiting lists for those who choose to collect them and use them to admire.

Stick around and learn. Yes, you apologized for being new then derided our work.

You emailed me twice. Mark Zalesky is not a maker. No, I don't make knives nor sell them. I can't offer you one for 'review'. I am a photographer of these great knives. That you don't understand that tells me you didn't read enough to understand.

We are a community in THIS forum and our members (not users) are passionate to defend our often-misunderstood desires for these fine tools.

I hope you will learn more.

Regards,

Jim

Wow, i love some of these knifes, so very beautiful. Too bad i dont have the type of pockets as some of you have.

Its not disbelief, its an understanding in design that some knife makers have that make their knifes stand out. The price is something that have obviously affected me because i cant get one because of this.

I am sorry i came into this thread so late, but by doing so, i have spent the better part of the last 2 days pouring through this thread in amazement and awe. I am very grateful of the services(Artistic value) that you bring to the knife making craft. I soon hope to make something worthy of you shooting, and being in the company of true giants. Amazing photography and amazing knives. True art displayed with true art.

Thank you for this thread
Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome to MY (Our!?) world. :D I really appreciate your kind words, and that you think I am an asset. I try.

No apologies needed. This thread may only get a handful of responses, but, no lie, it gains 10,000 views each month.

Everyone takes a peek. ;)

That said, I have some updating to do tonight. Thanks for the prompt.
