Photos SharpByCoop's Gallery of Handmade Knives

not a grey turd to be found.

I've got some real beauties to admire. Check these out:

Tim Steingass posted this on his own, but it certainly deserves another close look.

Anders Hogstrom sent this to me, bound for Bellevue, WA. ;)

No ivory to clog up the Custom's paperwork this time!

No one does feather pattern and thin steel bowies better than Kevin Casey.
orig.jpg

Great handles, great lines.

Details to please.

Lastly, I'm always excited to photograph the 'knife-like art' which Jeffrey Cornwell creates.

Thanks for admiring these. :D

I have a NEW piece to show you from Hill Pearce. It's 35 yrs old and mindblowing. It deserves its own thread. Wait for it....

My latest personal acquisition was from a collector. It is now the 19th Hill Pearce knife in my collection.

I started a standalone thread to talk about my HP collection and show many of his works:

Hill Pearce • A tribute to his works and influence

You may find it of interest, if you enjoy his style.

I've had the pleasure of shooting these incredible knives from some iconic makers:

Jim Kelso (Early AKI member, worked with Don Fogg)

Virgil England

Charles Bennica (All gold folder.)

Jurgen Steinau (WHOA!)

Bob Loveless with an older 'popcorn stag' fighter. Even has some brass in there. Easily from the sixties.
orig.jpg

In the RWL vein is the impeccable work of current maker, Marcus Lin. Here he machined and carved out an integral from a large chunk of D2 steel.

Chad Nell has made plenty of Loveless inspired knives. Today he's concentrating on some folders. Here's his latest with copper pins.
orig.jpg

Nice lockup:

Tim Steingass shows why 'custom' knives are unique and beautiful--as well as perfectly suited to the job.

My consistent client Ron Best sells every single piece he makes within days. No surprise!

orig.jpg

I choose the 'look' and he approves. Or not. Sometimes two artist's visions differ. Here's two of the same. I chose one style and he asked for another. Done.

Can you tell who wanted what?

I'll have more to post in the next few days. This is enough.

I´m gonna guess that you wanted the green background Coop. It provides more contrast to the knife and goes well with the blacklip MOP inlays.

The beige/tan background does go well with the gold but it seems to blur the contours of the knife a little in some places.

Okay, who did I offend now; Ron or Coop:D

My thoughts exactly.

Hello!

First up, excellent images as always, Jim! Pure enjyoment to watch once again!

I have no idea, who wanted what, allthough I think that Jim might have gone for the green as well, playing the complimentary color game nicely with the red accents of the knife.

My personal preference is the presentation of the "main" part in the second picture though, because I think this "perspective" is more flattering to the knife type in question (works better with larger blade knives imho). It does provide more "optical compression" to the blade, putting more weight on the decorated handle. For this type of knife I like it a tad better than the longer blade view in the green version, as the handle does come out more "compressed" in that one.

I think I myself would have wished for one that has the orientation of the light-colored backdrop one and a greenish backdrop that picks up the complimentary color-themed backdrop from the first (or maybe even a strive into a color-triade).

Best regards,
Alex

Splendid array of knives and photos COOP. Congratulations on your latest Hill Pearce acquisition.......wonderful lines.

You guys have a good eye! Like Ron's.... LOL!

I chose the light colored background, and the rarely seen pointing UP to the right stance. Since Ron places his name in the well, the presentation side is either side!

I was so proud of my stepping out of the box. he he he!

Ron NEVER asks me for an edit, but he simply wanted two things: More of his spectacular red stone showing, more contrast, and enhancing the blade perspective. (This model has, with it's rounded/pointed butt end, a need for the blade to be shorter in ratio.)

SO: Ron loved the darker green shot. I delivered that after understanding what he'd prefer. And.... it looks great. :D

"Superstar knives make ME look good!" Any way you show them.

Jim

I'm heading off to the New York Custom Knife Show (NYCKS actually viewing Manhattan from New Joisey ;))

It's a strong show for tacticals. Here's a taste of the wares....

I hope to see you there. Regardless, thanks for viewing.

Wow, all beautiful knives and photos. I like those Peter Carey flippers. I've not heard of him before but will have to check him out. Thanks for posting more of your amazing work.

Peter Carey is one of the hottest folder maker out there. he exploded years ago when I first heard of them and his pieces are very expensive now. I love them also.

My posting comes in fits and starts. I gather, then binge all at once. No apologies.

Since I last posted in this thread, we had a HUGELY successful show in NJ. I Posted observations and images in this thread:

New York Custom Knife Show (2014 NYCKS) • Stunning pieces!

^^^ There is a LOT going on there!

I hope folks are 'subscribed' to this thread. This way, even if you haven't paid attention to the 'read or not read' status of the title, you get a notification something new has come on board.

I will also remark that the thread gets an ENORMOUS amount of views regularly. It's notably quiet with comments, and although I'd love to see more, the 'attaboys' are silent and real. When I see this thread grow 5000 views in ONE WEEK, I know it is whetting appetites for the collectors/user, and fulfilling promotional needs for my clients.

It's also Knife Porn for ALL the viewers of Bladeforums. A one-stop repository of some of the 'Best of the Best'.

Which is a perfect segue into some fresh offerings...

It's no surprise I'm a big Ron Best fanboy. As he is SBC Photography. It works. He sold this within days of finishing to a client in the Middle East.

Zack Jonas is now living and bladesmithing in New Hampshire. He has a client who wanted to give each of his five children a knife. This said, he gave Zack a one-word description of each of them, and it was up to Zack to interpret that personality. I think you will agree he hit a bullseye!

Here is the set complete:

And now one-by-one with their names.

I will just tease you with a pair of knives I rec'd from David Kurt. I tell you I was solidly impressed with his work, which was new to me.

I have many more images to show of his, but you will have to follow a major publication to see the rest. :)
orig.jpg

My longtime friend and client Keith Ouye sent me this after C.J. Cai adorned it with a warm Japanese theme. (Someone please tell me what it says?)
orig.jpg

Tom Ward posted this on his own. It deserves to be seen and admired here, again and again. Hard to keep you eyes off of the curves!
orig.jpg

Award-winning Mastersmith Aaron Wilburn sent me THIS substantial Bowie. What a dominant piece!

I'll come back to show more sooner than my last return. :) I have more in the un-posted vault.

Thanks for viewing.

^^ Yup!

That Cronk push dagger was a topic of conversation from a noted editor this evening. I suspect it will be published soon.
