Sharpener said my Spiderco Delica VG10 is cheap steel & hard to sharpen

I understand that there are many Chinese fakes sold in Japan so I suspect that .
My kitchen knives are VG-10 and sharpen easily with fine diamond, butcher steel or ceramic. In performance it's very similar to N690.

I can get VG-10 sharper than any other quality steel I own, and when using the Sharpmaker rods or other ceramic.

I have never found a knife from Japan, or one who's blade was made in Japan, that has Junk Steel. I have used a Spyderco fixed blade Bill Moran drop point when hunting and camping. It has performed perfectly for almost 20 years. It has a VG-10 steel blade, which is a steel used in the horticultural industry in Japan on knives they use for grafting fruit trees. If it is good enough for them, and for Spyderco, you know it has to be a good solid blade steel.

I agree with other poster that it is easy to sharpen with the Sharpmaker.

VG-10 "Junk Japanese Steel"......hahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahhahah

I think you may want to invest in whatever sharpening system appeals to you and do it yourself, your knife sharpener sounds....uneducated.

The gray VG-10 Endura in my pocket must be defective, because it is currently the sharpest knife I own, has been very, very easy to sharpen, and has held the edge I put on it for an admirably long time.

I do believe that that sharpener is a weee bit confused!!!o_O:p John

VG-10 is a superb steel IMHO. A few years back a buddy and I skinned a black bear, me with my F1 in VG-10 and he with a CS Red River Elk Skinner in Carbon V, my favorite high carbon steel. That greasy, gritty hide took the razor edge off both steels, as you'd expect, but cutting performance was so close as to make no difference.

Yes, stupid Op post and from using and sharpening a lot of VG10 blades (mine and others), I can say it's a brilliant steel. It's actually a big plus when I'm interested in a knife. Like it ? Oh, yeah. It's VG10 ? I buy !

Spiderco Delica VG-10
Question; Is Vg-10 cheap Japanese steel

The knife sharpening guy ( does it every day ) who sharpened knife said its cheap japanese steel and that's the best I can do. ( note others tried to sharpen this knife before)
I got very upset and said this is VG-10 do you even know what that is?
He said I sure do its cheap Japanese steel and hard to sharpen and that's about as sharp as you will get it.
Im starting to think he is right.
I bought this new and paid a lot for it thinking I had some great amazing lifetime knife.
I just bought a knife for ten dollars that is much sharper than this.
I also sharpened it on my expensive Spiderco sharpener and could never get it very sharp.
I have aus 8 cold steel knives and $15 high carbon Opinel steel knives that are MUCH sharper than this, actually some are razor sharp.
I am pretty upset, this knife was like $70 or so.
So please tell me what you think.

How is your Bear Grylls knife holding up?

OP

Your sharpening dude is the Jon Snow of sharpening; he knows nothing.

VG10 is a fine steel and has been used for fine Japanese food processing knives for years.

Your Spyderco in VG10 is a quality knife and its easy to get sharp.
Congrats on a nice knife.

Change your knife sharpening guy ASAP ... or even better, learn how to sharpen your own knives. There is a certain satisfaction in that.

Buy a sharpening kit from Spyderco or the affordable Lansky sharpening set. Both are silly easy to use and your knife experience will never be the same again.

Further more, if you have a significant other, he/she will be thrilled, as y'all now have easy to use sharp knives in the abode.

OP mentioned in his post that he couldn't get it sharp on his Sharpmaker. Which to me is almost unimaginable, as VG-10 is ridiculously easy to resharpen on a Sharpmaker.
