Sharpener said my Spiderco Delica VG10 is cheap steel & hard to sharpen

Show a pic, and someone will tell you if it’s genuine spyderco. If it is, you either got the 1 in a million poorly treated blades or your sharpener is biased against Japanese steel. I own 6 or 7 knives in vg-10, and have never had a problem getting it as sharp as I wanted it.

OK Good idea. How do I upload the picture on here after I already made the original post

I love the Delica and love VG10. It’s, IMHO, the best all around steel you can find, right next to 154cm. Easy to get very sharp, corrosion resistant, and good edge holding. The sharpener is a dope.

I agree that you should sharpen your own. That said, I’ll put myself out there. If you are comfortable sending it to me, I’ll sharpen and return it to you sharp enough to shave hair and cleanly slice paper. You pay shipping but I’ll sharpen it for free. I’m not a professional sharpener and you don’t know me from Adam, so no offense taken if you don’t want to.

Only caveat is that if the “pro” buggered the edge irreparably, I may not be able to fix his damage.

that is a very nice offer. I may do that, please pm your contact info. I found the best sharpener on yelp here in the city. I will try him first, after I upload a picture and see of its even a real spyderco delica ( im suspecting it is not or one of those guys may have ruined the edge)

I bought it like four or five years ago on amazon or ebay. I cant remember, I would have to go looki way back in the history if it goes back that far
UPDATE was bought on amazon, I went to put one in my amazon cart and it said you purchased this item in october 2011
so I bought it on amazon, it should be genuine right ??

yes! Ebay is where most of the Chinese made Counterfeit are sold on the net.

He is most likely use to sharpening counterfeit junk

His statements alone show he doesn't know Jack about Sharpening or Steels. Find somebody else in your town or learn how yourself...

Not as a guarantee, no. It's an unfortunate practice of some to buy fakes for cheap from China and send them back to Amazon for refunds instead of the genuine knife (or whatever). Then Amazon turns around and resells the fake. I'd guess that the odds are low, but are higher than 0, which is what you'd get if you'd purchased from one of the many reputable knife dealers, particularly the ones that support this forum. Amazon might have better prices and more attractive shipping, but on certain things those few bucks are better spent for the peace of mind knowing that you're not potentially getting a fake. No worries if you're buying toothpaste or bed sheets or HDMI cables, but I wouldn't buy a Spyderco Delica from Amazon.

It's hilarious, but I'll bite. It's a bored admin. :D

I own two VG10 knives out of some? what? 70+ knives? I don't like VG10, I prefer better steels for the task at hand. I bought two Boker Kwaiken knives in spite of the fact that they are primarily made in VG-10 b/c I like Kwaikens. VG-10 is not my goto steel, but brands force you in to buying whatever steel they are designed/manufactured in.

KNIFE STEEL INVENTORY
80CrV2, 4 (all Winkler)
154CM, 3 (all Emerson)
1095, 4 (all ESEE and KA-BAR)
420HC, 3 (all Buck and Gerber)
AUS-8, 1 (all 5.11)
BDZ-1, 1 (all Gerber)
CPM-154, 1 (all Spyderco)
D2, 1 (all KA-BAR)
VG10, 2 (all Boker)
O1, 3 (all Randall)
And all the rest are 3V, CPM-20CV, CTS-XHP, M390, M4, S30V, S35VN, S110V, ZDP189.... super steels.

Nonetheless, anybody claiming to make a living as a knife sharpener who cannot sharpen a knife should be looking for other work.

Which Spyderco knife is cpm-154?

Even if it was a fake Delica, the inability to sharpen doesn't make much sense. If it is a fake, it would most likely have worse steel than VG-10. And crap Chinese steel may be really bad, but they are all generally very easy to sharpen, because they are soft. They won't hold an edge for long, but they all sharpen easily.

C calldoug glad to see you posting and following up at this point I would see about letting a professional from here sharpen it. The remarks you say your "sharpener" made about VG-10 make him sound like an idiot because he makes statements that are simply not true. I wonder if this sharpener was our forum expert who can tell you with absolute certainty that 420HC is the best steel ever.

Just a word on VG10.

We live in an era of remarkable choice for knife steels. A steel like VG10 might seem ‘cheap’ compared to S90V for example, but it is classed as a high-end steel, along with D2 and ATS-34, for example.

In his recent book, ‘The Edgemasters Handbook’, Len McDougall quotes Blackie Collins in an interview given shortly before he died. Len asked him what his favourite steel was. Blackie replied, “If I had to choose one knife to do everything for the rest of my life, I’d choose one of the four-forties.”

Similarly, A.G. Russell, at the age of 82, offered this piece of wisdom, “When I was young I wanted a blade steel and heat treat that would allow me to work a knife hard for a week and have it still sharp enough to continue to work. Now I look for a steel and heat treat combination that will sharpen easily and hold a good edge for a reasonable time.”

I’d say VG10 is just fine. ;)

Spiderco Delica VG-10
Question; Is Vg-10 cheap Japanese steel

The knife sharpening guy ( does it every day ) who sharpened knife said its cheap japanese steel and that's the best I can do. ( note others tried to sharpen this knife before)
I got very upset and said this is VG-10 do you even know what that is?
He said I sure do its cheap Japanese steel and hard to sharpen and that's about as sharp as you will get it.
Im starting to think he is right.
I bought this new and paid a lot for it thinking I had some great amazing lifetime knife.
I just bought a knife for ten dollars that is much sharper than this.
I also sharpened it on my expensive Spiderco sharpener and could never get it very sharp.
I have aus 8 cold steel knives and $15 high carbon Opinel steel knives that are MUCH sharper than this, actually some are razor sharp.
I am pretty upset, this knife was like $70 or so.
So please tell me what you think.

UPDATE from the original poster:
Today I took the knife to the highest rated knife sharpener in the city
They sharpened The spyderco delica VG-10 and a benchmade
they just have some kind of double wheel sharpener in the back, I didnt see it.
( I wish I could find an old school sharpener who really knows his stuff ).

It is a good bit sharper than it was. I think the last to guys at the sharpening
place I went to before twice maybe should star in a dumb & dumber remake.
I still don't know if it is a real Spyderco Delica,
I bought it on Amazon October of 2011 ( found that on amazon )
Were - are fake spydercos sold on Amazon ? / on prime ?
Note; How can I upload pictures here to get an opinion of genuine or not.
Better yet please tell us what to look for in genuine and not genuine spyderco / & delica.
Thanks to all I appreciate the help and opinions here, they are very useful.
PS I am not and never was good at sharpening knives, I would pay someone to teach me
how to put a really good edge ( shave hairs, etc ) on knives

Three options.
(1) Use the "Upload a File" button under the posting dialog box.
Test.jpg
(2) Upload a pic to an image hosting service like Imgur and paste the link here.
(3) If the picture has a unique URL, put that in between "["IMG"]"URL"[/IMG"]" (remove the quotations).

Upload a file only works for people with paid accounts, I believe. Tinypic.com is pretty straightforward.

Use the Choose File button to select a photo on your computer, add tags or use resize options if you want, then click the green Upload Now button. In the next window copy the url and tags under IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards and paste that into your reply here.

You sure the Delica is not a counterfeit? They were abundant a while ago. Where did you buy from?[/QUOTE
UPDATE: I bought it on Amazon and I am now suspecting it is a fake.
I just spent a long time looking at close ups of blue delica VG-10's
On mine the V is scrunched up and more like a Y-like v than a nice wide v
also the g is not clear and looks like an 8
if look closely on e-bay at for sales and solds and use the magnifying tool
you can see a few scrunched up g's as well as clear wide V's
also the jimping on the back does not really show from the side
