Shave of the day?

Well today I used A 1890 henckles wedge 5/8 and I used olivia s hand made german lather. It shaves real smooth after 10 laps on the leather strop. I forgot to mention the after shave balm from olivia is outstanding too.

Solingen Bismark (strait), Mitchels Wool Fat soap (great stuff) with an excelsior Boar brush (I think it is a 1503 or was that 1305).
Great shave, and I'm picking up in speed.

SuperSpeed, Shave Secret and water, and Bic blade. Probably not a fair test since my last shave was last Thursday, but this shave was every bit as effective as my Atra could do with a new cartridge. Not BBS, but time's a factor and I only do N-S & S-N passes. Thanks to all for the help--expect once my new shave lube comes in it'll get even better.

Went 6 days on a Derby and going back and forth between the L'occtaine soap and the TGQ sample. Either my technique has improved or the soaps made the difference but the burn was much less this time. Today I swapped out the blade for a Astra Platinum and lathered up with the Proraso White, what a dream shave. 4 passes no burn and back to BBS, just the way I like it. Tomorrow its the TGQs turn in the rotation again, can't wait till tomorrow morning to shave again.

another possibility is you just finally got a 'good' derby. I've heard some inconsistency about astra too, but have never had a problem. Welcome back to the astra side.

The Astra died early, and I went back to the Dorco ST301, They are still my favorite from this sampler. Everyone I have used has shaved well and had a decent lifetime. I am getting near the end of my sampler so I am starting to look over the other sets, but I think I may make a bulk order of Dorcos while I am at it.

Pre-shave:Washed face with hot water Proraso pre/post shave cream
Razor: Gillette Super Speed (really a Rocket, the British version)
Blade: Precision
Soap: Peoraso Green Tea and aloe
Brush: Omega Boars Hair
Post shave: TGR Standard After Shave Balm

So I got a Gillette Super Speed Flare Tip today for free and had to try it out. Because I had already had my shower and taking one requires me to wrap my arm in stretch wrap right now I decided to skip the hassle and just went with a hot water face wash and my Proraso pre shave. I also wasn't sure how I would like the new to me razor so I loaded up a blade that works for me but don't care if I toss it early.
What I found with the SS is that it is a very gentle razor and not a very aggressive cutter. The smaller handle and lighter weight than I am use to was nice for off hand shaving. I did a quick 4 pass shave and am not near BBS, but do have an acceptable shave. I stack that up to the gentle razor, the off hand shaving, and the simple fact that I can't pull the skin tight with my other hand. I finished off with my usual TGR aftershave balm even though I didn't feel I needed it due to the razor being so gentle.
All and all I am pleased with the new razor and look forward to being able to give it a go with my dominate hand, I think I can get a real close shave with it and maybe even be able to use some of the blades that I found too harsh on my face with the EJ.

Razor: Merkur HD
Brush: Rooney 3/1 Pure Badger
Soap: Tabac
Blade: Personna Red
Aftershave: Speick

Still a newb at this and tailoring my shave to my face. A kind member on this board gifted me some Astra Stainless blades and they were a little too aggressive. The Personnas so far are seeming to work smoother. I still have Derbys, Astra Platinums, Sharks, Zorricks (not too sure about that one), Sharps, and Feathers in my sampler to try out. THe problem is I have pretty thick stubble and sensitive skin, so the low agression blades like the Derbies probably are no good as well as the aggressives (Feathers). Any suggestions?

When I first received the Tabac soap it smelled of cold cream and distilled old lady. Once it's on the face though, I love the smell (and the lather). And Speick, as far as I'm concerned is a miracle healer - they should put it in soldiers' kits to help dress battlefield wounds.

I wind up having to do 2-1/2 passes (with grain, against grain, touch-up around goatee and cowlicks) to get BBS.

I also have a heavy beard and sensitive skin. The blade that works best for me is the Dorco ST_301, I would have sent you a. Couple of them but I only had 2 left at the time

Curse you unky-gumby! now I have to shell out $1.75 for a 10 blade package! :D Not a problem. Gives me an excuse to order more brushes, soaps, aftershaves or other what-nots to amortize the shipping cost!

Last few shaves have been with soaps only: L'Occitaine, Col.Conk and I'm beginning to favour them more than creams!

Can anybody make some suggestions for other soaps please? Proraso is on my menu as I like the cream, what else?

Thanks, W

Tomorrow is going to be a great shave, I got my left hand back today. Now what do I use my tried and true EJ89L or the Rocket Flare Tip I got last week:confused:

After completing my Six Months of Feathers exercise, I have now returned to BIC Chrome Platinum.

Same routine as always:

Prep: Hot shower
Lather: TGQ with a Merkur Futur brush
Razor: Merkur Futur
Blade: Bic Chrome Platinum
Shave: Two-pass + minor touch-up. First pass north-to-south (mostly with-the-grain) and the second pass south-to-north (mostly against-the-grain).
Aftershave: Splash of drugstore rubbing alcohol

And the result is good. It's clearly not as good as what I has been getting with Feather, but I may need to get my technique dialed back in. These Bic blades are great, but Feathers are clearly better. I'll make more of a judgement after I've dialed in with Bics for a few weeks.

Even so, these recent BIC shaves have been excellent shaves with no irritation or any problems. BIC blades are half the price.

Pre shave: hot shower followed by prasoso pre shave cream
Soap: L'Occtaine Cade soap
Brush: Omega Boars Hair
Razor: 1950s Gillette Aristocrat
Blade: Precision

It has been a while since I have tried a precision blade but it was the first I came to in the cabinet so that's what I went with. I was expecting a more mild shave, similar to the Rocket Flare Tip with the Aristocrat. I was wrong, not sure if it was the blade or the razor but it cut my beard like it wasn't even there. I did get a bit of burn from it but BBS in three passes. I need to get this razor replated its a keeper. Tomorrow I will be giving the Tech a go, I hear that Canadian Techs are more aggressive then the other techs

I just bought a Gillette super speed from the bay and waiting for it to come in. Not sure how well I will do with it, but for the record..., here is my currently routine-

First, I shave with a foil electric razor, that is, if it is starting to get long, like after 2 or 3 days, I like Remington.
Then I go to the following-

1- Fill sink 1/3 with hot water
2- Splash hot water on areas to be shaved,
3- Apply "my mix" of shave gel in a tube that contains aloe vera, and vitamin E and is mixed with Shave Secret and apply just a small dab to wet face.
4- Using a disposable razor, no name from Dollar Tree dollar store (I prefer a Sensor, but not working, so I just get what I can:)
First I shave with a downward stroke to get anything big left over from the electric razor,
5- Then lightly re-wet (is that a word?) and shave with an upward stroke to get really close.
6- Rinse face with warm water and clean razor, I use it multiple times
7- I do not use an after-shave at this time, instead, I use-
"Burn Jel Plus" (spelling is correct). It is made for burns, scalds and sunburns and contains vitamin E, moisturizers and Lidocaine.
I put a small dab in my palm, then spray it with the green alcohol and apply it to the area I just shaved.
The alcohol opens the pours and quickly lets the burn "jel" in which totally soothes any burn, etc from shaving.

Then brush teeth and take a shower, when I get out, I can then apply an after shave of my choice, depending on the mood I am in:)

Try showering first, it really softens up your beard. Another thing I would suggest is watching mantic59's youtube videos, they are very informative and he presents well

Pre shave: hot shower followed by prasoso pre shave cream
Soap: L'Occtaine Cade soap
Brush: Omega Boars Hair
Razor: Early Gillette Tech with copper blade holder
Blade: Astra Superior Stainless

This is a smooth razor, and the slim head profile makes those hard to reach areas a breeze. I did my usual 4 pass shave, no burn from it, and NBBS. Unfortunately Yesterday I got daring and put a feather in my Aristocrat and I am still recovering from that. I think I may have to take a day or two off from shaving and then come back with a Dorco in either the Tech or Rocket till the little cuts heal up. That is the last time I will try using a Feather blade, my face just can't handle them:(
