Shave of the day?

Useful link that thanks.

I used the stick and results were, OK, but I will use it when on the move.

... How do you use these sticks? just rub on the face and lather in situ? ...

Yeppers. It's that easy. I've been doing it for years. Long before there were all these websites to tell me I was doing it wrong (or right)...;):D

If I find it practical, what other sticks are available? ...

I swear by Arko. Cheap Turkish shave stick with a simple clean scent (some don't like the scent) and tons of rich lather. I like it so much that I keep a stick in my soapdish for regular hand/face washing as well...

And, enjoy the Yuletide Season:thumbup:

You too, my friend. :)

Thanks:thumbup:

I need to get hold of that Turkish soap, available on the Bay I suspect?

Regards, W

I've been using a 1922 Gillette Tuckaway that I picked up last week and I've got to say the open comb "New Improved" heads that Gillette made way back then still give a fantastic shave today.

Also- Arko soap and Astra blades with a splash of Ogallalla Sandalwood Bay Rum aftershave to end it right...

I've got to find some of that Arko here in Europe:D

Today, Merkur Traveller razor, small but really good and well planted. Whipped up some Taylor Lavender cream- I like this as it moisturizes the bristles comprehensively, good scent too. Fine close shave with no cuts or tightness, L'Occitane juniper shaving balm-running low on this got to get more. Almost looking forward to work:eek::D

Been meaning to take a pic and post in here for a while now... Had a great shave with my first straight razor (still my go-to razor!) and also have sitting nearby a similar Dovo I just picked up:

tabac shaving soap
ogallala bay rum with limes and peppercorns aftershave
silvertip brush with elk antler handle (made by me)
Solingen 6/8 straight

Fine set-up there.
That Bay Rum is a large bottle, looks almost drinking size....that'll last a long time.

Had a decent shave today, its about time too. I had a nasty head cold and my upper lip area was raw, and trying to lather and shave while sneezing and sniffling takes all the enjoyment out of it.

I used my Canadian #77 Gillette New, the Omega Silvertip conversion brush and some Proaraso Green Tea and Aloe soap, followed up with the Musgo Aftershave Balm.

I am consistently amazed with how quickly the open comb razor will mow through a couple days growth. 3 passes instead of my usual 5, and had a DFS with no irritation nicks or weepers. That's a feat when I use the New, I usually get the angle off a bit and catch myself.

I do feel the need to buy another vintage razor to throw into the mix, thankfully I just bought a bunch of supplies, so the budget for another razor is gone till next month:o

...

I suspect that it would be easier to find in Europe than here in the U.S. Most Europeans say that it is readily (and more cheaply) available in most Turkish/Indian groceries. If you can't find it, leave me a Visitor Message with your address and I'll send you a stick. :)

Preshave:Hot towel
Brush: Frendrihan Chassic Super Badger
Soap: Praraso Shaving Cream Green
Razor: Gillette Slim adjustable
Blade: Feather
Aftershave: Musgo Real Aftershave Balm

I haven't tried a Feather blade in some time and since my Styptic pen has been living in the medicine cabinet for some time now with no use, I decided to give one a try again.
Knowing that the last time I used a Feather I suffered from some serious irritation I cranked down the Slim to 2 and started. Well 2 was a little too soft so after the first stroke I went to 3. What can I say about the Feather blade, well for one its not as satisfying for me as the Dorco blades, you can't hear them cutting. Because the blade was cutting so well I was able to get away with 3 passes and a bit of a touch up on my neck, not near BBS but still a DFS. The Feather still causes me a bit of irritation but the Musgo takes care of most of that. I had one small weeper on my neck on the first pass, and managed to nick my right nostril  so the styptic pencil got to make an appearance tonight.

I think that I need to find a Canadian source for some of the Bic blades I was given. I find that they are a little more forgiving than the Feathers and almost as sharp. Something that will come in handy for when I get to go back to work and need a fast but good shave in the morning.
Dorco St-301 are still my favorite:p

Today's shave: Same as yesterday.

And another really great DE shave. I've been using a DE for just a few weeks over a year now. My DE shaves are an order of magnitude (ten times) better than anything I ever got from cartridges (Gil. Sensor) and cans. And my C&C shaves were an order of magnitude (at least) better than my old Norelco ever gave me. The really nice part is that I quite literally and quite actually save almost a dollar every morning with DE vs. C&C. My DE shave takes about three minutes longer than my C&C did (12 minutes vs. 9 minutes timed from first twist of the water tap to last wipe of the counter).

This has been a great change and I'm delighted to have made it. I recommend to any guy still paying out and suffering with carts and cans that you kick the can and get a DE. The learning curve was not long or hard, the shaves are great, and the monitary savings are real.

I feel exactly the same way. I've been DE shaving since Christmas and actually look forward to shaving now. I have a ball game tonight and should have a nice shave after I shower.
Sometime soon I'll try to get a picture of my shave stuff. Currently using Williams mug soap or some locally made soap, a Merkur Futur, Bic blade, Pure badger brush and Nivea aftershave balm.
I have a variety of blades to try and have some Musgo Real aftershave balm on order.

I'd like to know what that Musgo Real balm is like.

I hope to find out by late week.

After tonight's game (a losing effort btw :() I took a hot shower then proceeded to use a $10 ebay pure badger brush that had been soaking in the sink, along with Williams mug soap in mug pictured.
Put some soap on my face and then worked almost a minute on a good lather in my hand. Brushed on and then used my Merkur futur with a Bic blade (second use) on 1.5 setting. One pass with grain, one 90 degrees, then multiple passes against the grain in various spots until no stubble could be felt.

Followed by 3 cold water rinse/splashes. Let drip dry a little then applied a small amount of Nivea aftershave sensitive balm. Waited a minute until that absorbed, then another bit of Nivea.

I did nick myself twice. Once on a previous spot near my chin, and another on my neck. I was careless so it's my fault not the blade's. Much better than the dozens of cuts I was getting with feathers. I'm still a total newb and have lot's to learn but I can't believe how good my face feels after two applications of the Nivea. A baby's butt isn't near as smooth and that's a fact.

When in the Marine Corps. I used to dry shave with a Gillette Mach3. Even when wet shaving using a can of shaving cream, the Mach3 would irritate below my nose. Now, when making the against grain passes I feel a slight irritation but it goes away as soon as I cold rinse. The alcohol free aftershave balm is just icing on the cake.

Just over 3 weeks into this journey and I'm a very happy camper. :D

For me this morning:

Preshave: Hot shower
Lather: TGQ Soap, face-lathered
Brush: Merkur Futur-style
Blade: Feather
Razor: Merkur Futur
Aftershave: Drugstore isopropyl rubbing alcohol (generous splash)
Time: About twelve minutes total

Result: Darn near perfect.... again.

What setting did you have the Futur if you don't mind me asking.

I use the Musgo Real Aftershave balm and it is the bomb:p

It has a nice gentle scent, and a little goes a long way. Where it really shines in in the cold weather up here, I credit it to the beeswax in the balm. It really seams to protect the skin from the drying affects that sub zero temperatures can have on your skin
