Shave of the day?

Sunday morning after getting out of the shower I used an "Ever Ready" brush (not sure whether badger or boar) to apply Edge shaving gel for sensative skin and broke out my new to me Gillette DE razor filled with a Wilkinson Sword blade (three passes and I was done). It was a pleasant shave, but got a little razor rash on my neck so I will be buying and trying other blades when I get them ordered. The Wilkinson Sword were the only DE blades I could find in my local area and even then had to drive to a town 30 miles away to an old fashioned drug store.

All in all a great experience (and not too many nicks for a noobie to DE shaving).

Something that will help a lot is switching from canned goo to a wet shaving soap or cream. One of the other regulars can explain it better than I can but the stuff in a can works better with a multi bladed razor than it does with a DE.

I don't know this for a fact, because I switched my lather before my razor, and I found a huge difference going to a shaving soap over the canned stuff. Almost as big a difference as switching razors.

Brush: TGN Badger converted Omega
Soap: Proraso Green soap
Razor: 50s Ball End Tech
Blade: Israeli Personna Red
Aftershave: TGR Standard Aftershave Balm

I was right, yesterdays shave was so close I barely has a 5 o'clock shadow this morning. So I loaded up the Tech and gave myself a quick 2 pass plus touch up shave today. I had intended to put the IP in the Slim or my EJ89L, but I didn't feel there was enough growth to justify it. The quick shave with the Tech should leave me a decent growth for tomorrow to give the blade a real test in one of the other razors. I am pretty sure I will be ordering 100 IPs by Friday from West Coast Shaving because I can't seem to find them here in Canada.

Preshave- Hot Shower
Soap- Tabac
Brush- Rudy Vey Custom
Razor- Mergress slot #3
Blade- Red Personna
Aftershave- AV Musk

  • Soap- Mitchell's Wool Fat
  • Cream- Little dollop of Taylor's Avocado
  • Brush- Semogue 2010 limited edition custom boar
  • Razor- Gillette slim adjustable, dial set to 5
  • Blade- Super Iridium
  • Aftershave splash- Dominica bay rum
  • ASB- Trumpers limes skin food

That superlather from both the MWF and a pinch of TOBS makes for one helluva shave.

I've been thinking about that Mitchel'ls Wool Fat.

Interesting idea mixing soap with some cream, must try that one. TOBS is very good cream indeed,

If I'm using a soap I will frequently plop a little dollop of Proraso in with it for menthol effect. I am really wanting to try some of the aromatic soaps from Mama bears.

Which soaps are you hoping to try, I'm interested:thumbup:

MWF is my favorite soap of all that I've tried, and there have been quite a few. Excellent consistent lather, no overpowering smells, lasts a long time due to the dense nature of the soap.

You can also find the same product under the Kent brand name. Same stuff, different packaging.

Thanks for the info Guillotine:thumbup:

Steve, I like the sound of those soaps as well! Pipe tobacco especially, and there's a new mown hay I believe.

Anybody have actual experience of them? Kind of difficult to obtain here in Europe I suppose?

Mama Bear makes excellent soaps. My favorite (of the three I have tried) was Dragon's Blood. The Mysore Sandalwood and Almond where both very good as well.

You can only order through her website, I'm not sure if she ships overseas or not. I do know her house just burnt down, so I'm not sure how much she is doing just at the moment.

Is it gold or is that just the lighting? If its gold its an Executive:thumbup: Not sure if I will ever spring for a Fat Boy because I got a Slim. There are some razors that just have that draw, a 40s Super Speed and the Fat Boy are two of them.

EDIT: If I am right I just saw your post over on Badger and Blade and its not gold, still the price you paid for it was a steal:eek:

Today some new tubs of Taylor appeared.
Almond
St. James'
Eton College. This now comes in a blue tub AND THEY'VE CHANGED THE SMELL!!Nothing like before, can't understand this.

Anyway

Shower and then very hot flannel

Brush Men-U synthetic, works very well indeed as good as my badger brushes

Cream. Taylor of Old Bond St St.James's. Very thick lather and an excellent scent, citrus spice.

Razor Merkur 38c long handle

Blade Feather

L'Occitaine CADE balm- must try that Muggo Real

Result, Excellent. The Taylor St James' is really effective and thick cream without drying. Really annoyed by the change in Eton Coll though it was a favourite.

Hot shower
FatBoy
IP
Proraso
Semogue 1305
Alum block
Thayers WH
Nivea after cool
Clubman

2nd shave with Fatboy and I find it a bit more work than the EJ DE89L. Not a bad shave at all mind you just a little more work as in spot buffing. I am learning it takes a slightly different angle.

After a splash of Clubman all that is missing is a free piece of Bazooka!
