Shave of the day?

Preshave:Hot shower
Brush: Edwin Jagger Best Badger
Soap: Benton Clay Vetiver Paradisi sample
Razor: Dovo 6/8 Best
Aftershave: Barbasol Pacific Rush splash

Just a quick 1 pass shave to knock off the heavy growth. Between working 12 hours 3rd shift, and not getting much sleep because I watch my 9 month old daughter all day I don't feel like full shaves very often right now.

Luckily I go to first shift April 11, so I can start sleeping again!

So this week has been a pretty good acquisition week for me, first I got a handle to make a travel brush with, then the following day I finally got a Super Speed, and today I found a place to buy Barbercide so I can properly disinfect my razors as I get them and as I feel I need to.

So for the last couple of days I have been using the Super Speed, boy talk about a mild razor. I was expecting it to be close to my Rockets but I think it may even be milder than my Techs. Still gives a good shave though.
Todays shave:

Hot shower
1940s Gillette Super Speed
Kaloderma shave cream
Musgo Real aftershave balm

I think I am down to 2 types of Gillettes to try a New Improved and an open comb TTO.

Barbasol Pacific Rush AS splash

Tomorrow is my 1 year wedding anniversary so I really took my time and did a 4+ pass shave. I usually only do a 3 pass shave with this razor. Still had very little irritation, and a wonderfully BBS shave. :thumbup1:

The Barbasol Pacific Rush AS splash is sold at Dollar Generals for less than $2. If you like menthol, this stuff has it! My face feels like it is in a freezer right now, I love it. Note that only the splash contains menthol, the balm by the same name does not.

This morning I was running a little behind in my routine. As a result, I took the opportunity to do an experiment I have been intending to try.

The experiment isn't anything remarkable; I decided to gain back my lost time by going back to my cartridge shaver routine.

I grabbed one of my few remaining Mach 3 Turbo razors along with the Neutrogena Shave Cream (the left over stuff I used to use) and, after preparing my beard with a hot shower, went to work.

I knew the Mach 3 would result in a quicker shave than my now-normal DE shave. In fact, I finished in a little under half the time (5 vs. 11 minutes). As far as my attempt to catch up in my routine: mission accomplished.

I took no shortcuts (no pun intended) to shorten the time required. I applied the goo, did my normal 3 passes (wtg, xtg and atg) and felt for any missed areas.

Having been a DE convert for (I'm guessing) the better part of a year, I am accustomed to going slow and getting excellent results.

With the Mach 3, I could shave with a reckless abandon, having no fear I might remove some skin with my stubble.

The problem was, after my 3 passes, I found what would have been, if using my Black Beauty and Feather combination, an unacceptable amount of beard remaining.

It's much like what would constitute my now-usual 5 o'clock shadow.

Bottom line: The cartridge shave resulted in a fast shave with no chance of biting or even irritating my skin. What it gained in speed and safety, it more than lost in closeness of shave.

I'll try in the future to make sure I have plenty of time for my DE shave.

Rick, you are so right.

I tried a cartridge the other day but I DID use soap and brush. The result was faster but the end-product INFERIOR. Not only does it not feel as close as DE shaving, you can see the shadow too-which also implies you need to shave more frequently, not good...

kg4ghn-Mike, what's that Cella like? Is it an Almond scented soap/cream from Italy?

Thanks, W

Today/yesterday

Shower, face wash with Musgo Lime glycerin soap
Merkur 34
Feather
Vulvix Badger
Taylor of Old Bond St. St. James' cream
Feather
L'Occitane Baux after shave balm

Excellent result from new Feather on 3 day's tough stubble. Taylor makes really good creams, I always whip up too much (it works so well)
Some buffering and an unbelievably close shave- couldn't feel any hint of stubble. Don't know about bbs more like Kim K's butt :D (not as pretty I know!) The L'Occitane Baux is not only soothing it's a fine moisturizer too.

Yes it is an Italian almond scented soft soap. I like it very much, it is probably my current favorite soap. It just explodes into lather. I have the small red tub right now, when I run out I'm going to buy the 1kg brick.

Well I'm about a week into DE shaving and while I didn't manage to nick myself once during the learning process, I think I'm just now just getting my technique down and feel obliged to finally post here.

Preshave: Hot shower and conditioner on stubble
Lather: C.O Bigelow menthol shave cream
Brush: Tweezerman badger
Razor: US Made Adjustable Gillette (early 70s?)
Blade: Israeli Persona - second shave on it.
Aftershave: Hot rinse, cold splash then Thayer lavender witch hazel

Results: Awesome and baby smooth! I set the razor to 5 for a WTG pass - occasionally doing a second one if I haven't shaved in a few days or if the stubble still feels a tad long, then move it down to 4 for an ATG pass, and finally turn it down to 2 and J-hook my neck (which used to always come out relatively rough until I started using this technique)

Still takes me a good 15-20 minutes for a smooth shave but now feel like I have the technique down well enough that I can start working on speeding things up.... not that I want to since I actually find the process enjoyable (and dare I say - therapeutic?) now :p

Still trying to decide if I will keep buying Feathers. I get great shaves but they cost a crapload more than Personna reds which are great for me.

What's wrong?

I've found the last three shaves to be well below par.

Prep and materials the same, new blade, just a poor finish not close enough.

Maybe it's because I left it for three days instead of two? Disturbed.......

I've switched up my shaves recently and have been truly enjoying the new regimen:

Hot shower
Porasso Pre-Shave Sensitive while getting my kit together
Cella Crema da Sapone applied with a Semoque 2010 limited edition boar
Merkur with Derby blade
Splash with Ogallala Bay Rum w/ Cedar and Sage, or with Lime and Peppercorns

I think I'm liking the Cella better than the Tabac - it provides a lot more cushion.
I like the Derby blades better than the Personna Israeli Reds for the first shave, second shave is tied, I can get a third shave out of the Personnas, the Derby start pulling on the third.

I just shaved again with my Rolls Razor a 1953 model and the shave is great. It was a 4 day beard giving a nice, close shave with no razor burn or cuts. It took time to arrive but not a day longer than 2 years. I hot towel it for a minute or two, use glycerin soap and allow it a minute to soften then take my time. I've only been stropping my razor between shaves now for a month and it works fine. Then rinse with cold water and apply facial lotion . I enjoy this process and best of all my wife approves. ;) DM

Pre-shave hot shower
brush wetted with almost boiling water to make lather (Omega silvertip badger brush) from D.R. Harris lavendar shaving soap.
blade: Feather
razor: Merker Futur set on 2
Cold water face splash after shaving and then Thayers Witch Hazel with Lavender for skin toning
scent: Pattrick (made in Ireland).

result BBS shave that lasted until the next morning (had a little growth giving me a DFS or darned fine shave this morning).

This mornings shave was Norelco Architec due to time constraints. :p

Well, I was the recipient of some generosity at B&B and was gifted a pair of really nice SE GEMs. A mint condition Micromatic and a mint 1912. I have to admit that the shave is absolutely incredible and rivals if not exceeds the DE shave.
