As a sheathmaker myself I feel that a dedicated sheath forum will generate the traffic needed to sustain it. I think the prime function of the forum would be tutorials on sheathmaking (both kydex and leather), generating business for the sheathmakers who already pay for a membership, a dedicated sheath gallery, question & answers, etc. I feel we are at a point now that it would be beneficial to the forum to add it.

You nailed that one right on the head Ken, I was headed here to ellaborate on what I'd like to see there and you got all but a couple of the points I had.

I'd add the need to discuss factory and production sheaths, how to improve, repair and praise those that have produced sheaths that are above the industry norm.

I would like to see discussion on mid tech, or semi production sheath work as well. I've been peeking into that realm for quite a while now and it seems to have a niche.

I like the idea of a gallery, even as a stickie like some of the forums have here.

This might open a new tier of memberships as well for those who want to use the forum as a means to provide services like the knifemakers do. :)

This is getting exciting!

I'm going to be away from the forums for a week or so, taking care of my fathers final wishes. :( but,

I want to keep this bug in y'alls ear!! :)

When I get back I want to post a few more ideas for that sheath forum. Also, I wonder if a poll would help? May be to get some concrete opinions from the masses.

family stuff sucks!!!! Sometimes I wish I wasnt an only child.

+1 for a sheath forum- I have found it very frustratrating trying to find even the info that I know is around.

I'd like one too. A few years ago I made a bunch of sheaths either for me or friends. Was learning a lot via email from a few leather benders. I'm getting back into it and want to expand my knowledge. I could take my questions back to email, but if there was a forum to ask in others could also benifit from the information, not just me.

If it's not feasable at this time, I'll understand. ;) Thanks,

Heber

The Custom and Hand Made Knife forum here has had a fair amount of sheath discussion recently...A lot of it has been on and about my custom leather sheaths, but if you are not a regular on that forum you could easily miss it. As a result of my exposure on that forum, and three or four other forums as well, I get a lot of calls and emails asking questions and seeking advise which I am glad to and do answer. It may well be that a dedicated forum would gain traffic and be of general benefit. I would welcome such a forum and I believe other people would as well.

By the way, I have used the "sheathmaker" forum name on this and other forums since I first joined (for years) so it's just a coincidence.

Better quality than quantity!

Hang in there. We're waiting for you to get back.

Thank you brother, it means a lot. I should be back by the end of the week if all goes well, depends on how much stuff, if any, the stepmother wants me to get out of the house. ;)

Hi Heber! Long time no see, good to see your getting back into the leather bending! :D

Hi Paul! Long time no see as well, I dont get to the CKD or the green forum as much as I'd like. Your work is still incredible. :)

We're leaving in the morning real early, 10 hours with an eight year old in the back seat. Thank God for mini DVD players and the Nintendo DS. :p

The problem with this is sustainable traffic. Look at the MultiTool forum. Look at the Personal Grooming / Shaving forum. Both subjects have a lot more to offer than sheaths, and get minimal traffic.

Just put "Busse" in front of sheath forum and you will have all the traffic you need.

Seriously, being a newer member I have gained much knowledge from this forum and sheath making is the last phase. I have started my first real stock removal project and will need to make a sheath for it. I have gotten sheath making help from makers via email and that has helped, but a one stop forum to get all the info would be very nice. I would bet you could get a sponsor like Tandy leather to kick in a few bucks to sell their supplies. Adding a new sub-forum shouldn't even make a dent in the effectiveness of this great community. Sheaths can range from very basic and inexpensive to show pieces. The knowledge is here, it just needs to be housed in one place.

There is enough traffic to be sustainable now. All the times it's been proposed in the past there wasn't, but now there are posts about sheaths in General every day.

If the forum is created I would like to nominate leatherman to moderate it (if he wants it). He is very knowleadgable and has the respect of many of the members here, myself included.

Could it be broadened to 'storage & carry'? Sheaths, pouches, clips, sack-ups, rolls, safes, sock drawers, presentation cases, etc? Allow talk for knives, pistols, flashlights, magazines, pepper spray, cell phones, survival kits and such. That should make for better traffic-discussion mirroring general, maintenance, reviews, gallery, gadgets, prac tac, wilderness, & makers forums for knives.

just a thought

We have a forum for all of that already...it's called Gadgets & Gear. This forum would be strictly for the discussion of leather and kydex sheath crafting, the processes involved, the styles, the presentation, and showcasing of a maker's work. I could be possible to broaden it to carry options (i.e., pocket, neck, IWB, on the belt carry) for specific types of knives.

I'm baaack! :) Exausted, mind numbed, and totally incomprehensive .......... is that a waord? waord? yep, time to go to bed. :p
