A fine sheath is practically a necessity IMO for a custom carry knife and can add tremendously to the overall presentation of a fine custom knife display.

We collectors are fortunate in that there are some extremely talented sheath makers to supply us with these works of art which many times accompany our knives. It's always amazed me that some of the finer knife makers are also among the finer sheath makers. I would put Joe Keeslar, Larry Fuegen, Jay Hendrickson and John Cohea in this group. This is by no means a complete list, so please feel free to add your favorites.

Please share photos of your favorite sheaths here. They can be ones you own or are owned by others.

Also, what are your thoughts in regard to sheaths?
For example what importance do you place on your knives having sheaths?
Do you feel knife makers should supply sheaths with their knives or do you prefer to work with a sheath maker in creating your sheaths?

As always, thank you in advance for your participation.

Joe Keeslar:

I carry a Paul Long sheath at least a few times a week. I find the sheath to be just as important as the blade. Claude Scott makes a fine sheath also.

Here is a favorite of mine from Larry Parsons

Wonderful thread my friend

The importance of a high quality functional sheath is so underrated that I applaud you for bringing mention to it

I do not care for Kydex unless it is mated to leather

I can not over emphasis how important my relationship with P Long has been in bringing my dreams of function beautiful leather to a reality

Thanks Paul

Here are some of Paul's and many others

A good sheath is of paramount importance. Not having one greatly reduces a knife's utility. Not only does a sheath allow you to carry a knife when not in use, it also protects the knife.

I think custom knife makers should provide sheaths if they can make good ones. If the sheath isn't of the same quality as the knife I'd probably just send it to someone like Paul Long to get an aftermarket one made.

I also want a sheath to share the same aesthetic as its knife. Doesn't look as well thought out otherwise.

Unfortunately I don't have many examples to share, apart from this puukko and its tuppi. The sheath is a simple and clean design, appropriate given the knife.

Joe - It's a Long shot anyone has more of Paul's work than you.

Bob-- I was waiting to see what you'd bring us.

Here's one from Stuart Branson. The chatoyance of the Sapele is just gorgeous in natural sunlight. It just sings. What you may not be able to see is how the grain of the wood follows the exact subtle curvature of the saya. The wood was chosen especially for that purpose. Combined with the beautifully fitted horn kurikata and koiguchi and wrought kojiri, it makes it the finest "sheath" in my collection. The tanto itself has so much appeal. Combined with the saya, it may be the nicest thing I own.
