Sheath Thread; please share some of your favorites

New one just completed. Cross draw and vertical carry. Some truly beautiful work on these pages and very clever ideas.

As you don't see many of these, I thought I would add it to this thread. This is a non-clipped ‘pocket’ sheath made by Matt Bailey. This sheath easily and comfortably slips into the back pocket and feels about like carrying a wallet. It even slips nicely into a front pocket of your jeans. An alternative to carrying a small fixed-blade knife on the belt.

Here is one I recently made with a foldformed copper throat.

And another that is a center seam neck knife sheath.

I know this is a sheath thread but I can't help mentioning that the Ladder pattern on that Winkler is insane!

David's really making some beautiful sheaths. He does a remarkable job of combining multiple hides and tooling to really complement the knives they are created for.

Cool thread Kevin, I think I must have missed it the first time around. Glad it's back.

To answer your original question: "Do you prefer knife maker to make a sheath or do you enjoy working with sheath makers separately?" I don't know that I have a strong preference. Some makers make great sheaths and I do appreciate when they include them but I have also had great success pairing sheaths on my own.

Example below is a JR Cook sheath. His leather work is as strong as his metal work. In this case, he made a nice functional sheath that can be removed from the belt "sheath holder". This allows you to get in and out of truck without removing your belt to remove whole sheath. It is both beautiful and uniquely functional. Obviously, I never would have thought of this if working with a sheath maker.

Sometimes not getting a sheath with a knife allows you to find one, or have one made, that better conforms to your ideal combination. I bought a Walrus ivory and Damascus hunter from Keven Cashen this year at Blade. Unfortunately (for him), he forgot all his sheaths at home and had to sell them without. It was fortunate for me because Kenny Rowe had a sheath at his table that IMO was a perfect match for this knife. It had inlayed cape buffalo with colors that complimented Kevin's knife perfectly for me. I showed it to Kevin and he agreed it was better than the one he planned for this knife.

Finally, I just recently had the pleasure of working with Paul Long directly to make a sheath for Dave Lisch Vest Bowie. I enjoyed the process. I sent him a few pics of sheaths I liked, told him the colors I liked and didn't like but otherwise gave him artistic license to do what he thought best for the knife. He obviously knows what he's doing and what he came up with was spot on for me.

I don't remember if I posted this in the past but Terry Vandeventer made one for my knife that I find quite striking, especially in person. Its built nice and thick, is hand stitched and has that quality leather smell. :) Not all sheaths have it.

Not sure how I've missed this thread? Absolutely stunning work by all the artists. Truthfully, I've always wondered what people do with all their fancy knives that would never be used in the field. The pictures that everyone has posted with the knives accompanied with the sheaths on display have helped me understand how the collector "uses" their knives.
