Hi folks,
Does anyone else have issues with the shields falling off of their slippies? I noticed that with just a good jolt or the right amount of time and the shields fall right off.

Are there any slippies out there that DON'T have them, besides saks?

Just curious,
thanks,
Brett

Most slipjoints now have glued shields, which can fall off. I have only had one fall off. They used to be pinned and would not fall off. The only standard production knife that I have with a pinned shield is my Moore Maker 5301 stockman. I think some of the other special edition knives that Queen has made also have pinned shields.

I have a couple of knives with pinned shields, guess those won't be falling off any time soon! :D I guess all the rest are glued. I have never had the shield fall off of a Case, Schrade, Camillus, Bulldog, or Hen and Rooster, but I have had four fall of off Queens and one off of a Boker made Henckels stag copperhead. The four Queens were a 39 CSB folding hunter, a 9 ASB stockman, a 41L CSB, and a 41 stag. Three of the Queens and the Henckels fell off in my pocket, the last Queen to come off was on the #9, a brand new amber stag bone knife that I had all of two days. I was on the back porch and dropped it onto the wooden steps, the shield flew off into the flowerbed and I almost gave up looking for it before finding it. All of these loose shields I reglued with Krazy Glue, and have had no more falling off after that. Apparently whatever Case is using for their glue is better than some of the other brands. I like Queen's knives and I will be buying more along, but having a pocketfull of shields is a bit disconcerting on a fifty dollar knife. It might could be expected on an el cheapo, but these are no el cheapos.

I had three different slipjoints lose their shields, two Heinkels and one Case. Both companies sent replacements for me to install.

My A.G.Russell premium scout's shield came off. I retrieved it and glued it back on; no trouble since then.

Had a Boker and a Case lose their shields. Never tried to get a replacement for either. Don't have the Case anymore.

I had a shield come off one Boker stag stockman. I mixed up some epoxy and put it back. It never came off again.

I wonder if anyone has done any kind of survey on what kind of scale material the shields fall off. Aside from poor glue, I wonder if stag and bone does not let the glue hold as well due to the less porous nature vs wood scales.

I have had the shield fall a Schrade "Heritage" trapper and a Case Texas Jack both were Bone handled. Lost the Schrade shield but super glued the Case back on.

I've had shields fall off of two Canal Street Cannitlers. The first Cannitler lost its shield after a day. That one was returned due to other issues (poor grinds and poorly fit scales). The second knife lost its shield as I removed it from the box upon receipt. Eventhough this one also had issues (weak springs), I decided to keep it and simply glued the shield back on with epoxy.

Please say it isn't so! Our forum knife? Let's hope that Canal Street has that problem solved.

That, and the fact that natural materials "move" pretty much guarantees that an unpinned shield WILL pop out at some point during the life of a knife. :(

Hey Jackknife,
I have a queen dr birdseye maple dogleg and it fell off the second day I carried it. Honestly, I threw it away and dremelled the area and smoothed it down. I like it more now as I have a little thumb spot to put my thumb when I use it.

Hope you are well friend,
Brett

Only ever had two shields fall out and they were both Henckels. Fortunately I found them and a little superglue sorted the problem.

More Canal Street woes: Shield fell out of my full size Trapper after 3 days but retrieved it and glued it back. Weak backspring on this knife is shocking/dangerous and it's a 2007 build knife. The shield on my Queen BEM Teardrop liner is not aligned properly and sticks out, so I don't give it long......

No problems from other marques though.

Ugh - how do you all put up with it. I won't own a knife with a glued-on shield - period. I carry a boker congress with a pinned shield and I would never own a case knife newer than 1979 unless it was a barlow or something without a shield. Yuck. Just another example of the the sad state of manufacturing - worldwide. Don't participate by buying that junk. Lots of good stuff made before the mechanized glue em on era is available on Ebay for cheap enough to be carried and used. Just MHO

My Boker has rosewood scales, the Case Muskrat (oh, I miss it!) had jigged bone.

I had 2 bokers, and a Case drop their shields on me. 2 were plastic shields and one was bone. I was lucky and found all the shields so I was able to epoxy the shields on and they have all stuck very well since. Joe

knowtracks,

I went through 4 cannitlers before I found one I could live with. Three of the standard designs and one of AG's. It got to the point were I finally "settled" on the last one just because I liked the pattern so much. This one literally lost it's shield upon first inspection, and appeared to have little to no glue holding it in. I've been reluctant to post about all the problems I've seen as I didn't want to upset the forum knife applecart.

I find it pretty stupid that we can pay 100.00 for a slipjoint and have the darn shields fall off. I bought a boker deluxe whittler and paid a nice price for it. Two days later the freaking shields fall off.

personally, i find it unacceptable.

Thanks,
Brett
