Shields falling off...???

Just a heads up, great eastern cutlery pins their shields :) you can see the pin on the inside of the liner on their knives

GEC pins the shield on every knife they make that has a shield.

GEC pinns their shields.

GEC pins their shields do they not?

Do GEC really pin their shields?

Hopefully someone here knows the answer.

Smartypants.

Willgoy, I hope you can find your shield, either locally or in the mail from Queen Cutlery. I'm sure its jigged-out indent is a sad sight in the meantime....

This one keeps popping off. I'm afraid to carry it for that reason. I've been able to find it every time but I keep telling myself to order one from Case before it's lost forever. I have a tiny drop of Gorilla glue holding it now. Other than this knife no other shields have come off.

I've had a Case shield pop off, in a '90s stockman, and a Canal Street pop off in an AAPK Forum knife. I lost the Case, but they sent me about 6-7 of them to cover all the shields used that year!!
I scratched up the back of both. and crazy glued them on.

GEC weld/solders a pin onto the back of the shield, then peens it onto the handle before assembly.
Much more work and much more secure!!

pertinux: Nice woman at Queen C just sent me an e-mail, shield on its way ! Actually hope they send a few like Charlie got from CASE, you never know... and pinning them on is extra work, but work that sets it apart from run of the mill.

Yes there is this gaping hole like an eyeless socket where the shield used to be :eek: The jigging on this WCSB is very deep, making grinding off the shield recess and going shield-less impractical.

Thanks, W

The only shield I ever had fall off was on a 90s Queen Medium Stockman. It was glued in and fell out within a week of EDC pocket time.

I managed to find the shield in my pocket and after scratching up the backside of the shield and the recess where it went I took some epoxy and glued it, leaving it in a clamp for 24 hours.

That was 7 years ago and the shield is still in place, even after my wife washed it and dried it in my jacket pocket numerous times.

I've had a pinned shield fall off. It was on an old stag handled horseman knife. The stag was very "groovy" though and it was pinned with one side hanging off the edge of a deep groove.

The shield was wobbly and would rock side to side if you touched it. Eventually it just came off in the pocket. No big deal though, the knife is 100+ yrs old, can be re-pinned, and the old stag is very nice and worth the trouble:D

A large "Thank You!" to Sarah for the laugh of the night.

This shield saga is beginning to annoy: after quite a time lag they sent me two shields, WRONG size far too small.

Returned them, with once again exact description of Utility Knife pattern No.11 White Carved Stagbone and a picture of it downloaded from a catalogue.

Shields x 2 arrived today, WRONG size again far too big. Do I really need to package it, post it from Europe to their factory simply to have a shield glued on???!!

Moral: pinned shields rule.

Will - What kind of diameter pin are we talking? If you are not too precious about the Queen shield (its round right?) I could send you a 'slice' from a mosaic pin maybe??

Will's ordeal shows exactly why I no longer bother with knives that have glued shields. Don't want the bother, not to mention that it is a lesser quality of construction.

Big pet peeve with me not having a pinned shield. Seems like a small thing to ask and a primary reason I dont collect more of the newer Case knives. I wonder if their Case/Bose collabs are pinned?

Failing Shields = Glue

Glued Shields = Poor Construction

Sorry, cannot say it any nicer.

Good points, fellows...

I´ve ordered a PUMA Solingen Stockman some time ago and while was carrying it, I put it out of the pocket and lay it on the table. When I was handling the stag and looked at it - the shield was gone. That nice shield with the cougar was gone. I grabbed into my pocket - and there it was!

I went to the workshop and put some superglue into the hole. I was using tweezers to applicate the shield in way and direction it has been. But I failed and now the cougar looks into another direction than it has done before :grumpy: - somehow the stag was quiete high; so I couldn´t put it in there correctly.

However - a great knife but that shield always annoys me when I´m taking the knife in my hands.

I was going to suggest next asking Queen for knives to match the four shields you have, but it seems you've already sent at least half of them back. ;-)

More seriously, what about tracing and/or creating a rubbing of the shield cut-out, and sending that to Queen in a postal letter? I'd be loathe to send off the knife, not only because of time and cost but because of how non-confidence-inspiring the exchanges have been to date.

I have a large slip joint marked W.H. Wragg , Sheffield, England, with what looks to be deer antler slabs and a shield that does have two pins. I did not like the way the shield fitted, in that I could get a good grip, under the edge of the shield with my finger nail. So I took some Super Glue and put it under the edge of the shield, all the way around, several times, till I could no longer get my finger nail to grip the edge of the shield. I doubt i would have lost the shield with its two pins, but it feels better after the Super Glue. John
