Shields falling off...???

I have only had it happen once. It was a baby sunfish from Schatt & Morgan. I glued it back in and went forward. I really like the knife, so i was pretty forgiving. :D

Ugh - how do you all put up with it. I won't own a knife with a glued-on shield - period. I carry a boker congress with a pinned shield and I would never own a case knife newer than 1979 unless it was a barlow or something without a shield. Yuck. Just another example of the the sad state of manufacturing - worldwide. Don't participate by buying that junk. Lots of good stuff made before the mechanized glue em on era is available on Ebay for cheap enough to be carried and used. Just MHO

I just have to say RIGHT ON! you are so right. That's why for instance I view so many of the traditional folders with a very suspicious eye. The times Ive been burned by knives has been with moore maker and case. And Ive had a sheild pop off a queen large texas toothpick. Traditional pocket knives are not put together by workers with traditonal values. In my opinion you can still find traditional values in manufacturing in victorinox, and to be fair some of the tactical knife manufacturers like spyderco do an upstanding job for the most part.

I recently discovered that some of the Northwoods knives, which I believe are made by Queen, have pinned shields, but some are glued!!!! Why do they bother to make a high end knife with a glued on shield - especially when its clear that they still know how to do them with pins. I just don't understand how they make production decisions like that. It must be the result of the bean counters running the world rather than the people who know how to make the product - whether it be knives, cars, newpapers, houses or anything else.

I have never had a shield fall off.Case does pin their shields on some special editions. I have a Case brothers 6391 whittler with a pinned shield, but that was made in 1990. They must still do it now and again.

I was thinking about this some more and was wondering if anyon ehad a theory for them popping out.

Carrying in pocket with keys?
Extremes of temperature?
Solvents or cleaners?

Ideas?

As previously mentioned by others, sometimes you just pick them up or take them out of the original box! Other times they have to go through the laundry.

Most of the Case Classics were actually made by Queen, and with pinned shields. There were four Case Classics patterns made by Case and those had glued shields. As far as I know, no Case knives have had pinned shields since the late 70's, other than the high-end Case/Bose knives.

I had thought that Queen at least still pinned the shields on their higher end knives like Schatt, but apparently they do not from what others have said.

I have owned quite a few of the new Queens with D2 blaade steel in both wood (cocobolo and birds eye) and in carved stag bone and have only had one shield fall out. I will say though that Queen does a sloppy job of even gluing the shields on to these knives, especially on the birds eye models...big gaps around the shield etc.

Okay, stupid question... I haven't been plagued by shields falling off, and honestly am not sure how to tell pinned from glued  What do I look for ?

Mike

If you look at the liner, inside the knife opposite the shield, you should see a pin. You'll also see the other end of the pins holding the scales on, in their respective locations.

I'm not sure if this is true of all pinned shields but is evident on some that I have.

I have a queen in my collection and didn't even know it.It's a nice knife with a split backspring, but the small blades are tough to open.Thats funny that Case would contract a higher end knife out.I would think they could do it themselves.

It's not a question of whether or not they can do it themselves. It's a question of if they can do it themselves, on their lines, with their equipment, right when they need to be done. If that is not possible, contracting the job to someone who has the production capacity at the time it is needed, who can make the blades to the standard required, makes a lot of sense. IIRC, different companies in the past have contracted with each other to produce knives for competing marks for at least a century. Why shouldn't this tradition continue now?

The "Case Classic " line of knives weren't really actually "Case" knives. They were built under contracts from James Parker when he owned Case for a short period of time during the 1990's and owned the right to the Case brand name trademarks. As was pointed out already, Case themselves built four of the Case Classics, Queen others. I don't know if Queen built all the rest besides the four Case built patterns or not.

At the risk of exhuming a corpse....

The shield fell out of my Queen Utility knife (No.11) in WCSB yesterday, it was an odd premonition as I was wondering IF it might fall out and the same day it did! Must start doing lottery....:D Searched pockets and balcony but it's so small and thus a goner. Have to e-mail Queen see if I can get a replacement if I do, a load of epoxy is being used:thumbup:
