Shining Rock Overnight: Insanely Picture Heavy Thread (Dial-up Beware!)

Great picture tour of your outing Brian:thumbup:

Astounding terrain pics:eek::thumbup:

Thanks that was great:thumbup::thumbup:

It amazes me that so many people out there are SO ill-prepared. The man and the baby upset me the most - completely irresponsible.

Otherwise, I'm jealous of your trip. Thanks for the pics as the scenery is beautifully serene.

Awesome picture series Brian. I love it when you get a real feeling for somebodies trip through their picture sets. I think the only problem with this trip was that it was limited to only one overnight stay! I like you and your brother's tradition of the sunset cigar. I don't smoke normally, but I do make a habit of bringing a cigar when camping. Good for bugs when wearing a wide brim hat, but also is a great way to just enjoy the moment.

Hey, I just have to say - you don't look so tough when you aren't pointing a handgun through a police car window :)

Glad to hear the trip went so great!

Great pics bro !!!

I can rememeber a mate of mine back in blighty telling me about when he was two thirds of the way up a gnarly mountain one bad winter in Scotland. Him and his mate were all kitted out with crampons and ice axes etc and out of the mist come a little old couple who had been to the top. The old couple were wearing ordinary old folks clothes complete with wellington boots and carrying umbrellas, they turned to my mate and said " Be carefull lad it's a bit rough up there ! " Crazy eh !!!!

LOL! Put sunglasses, a hat and a gun in anyone's hand and they will look tough. Even a grandmother! :D

See? Grandmothers are TOUGH broads!!!!! :D:D:D:D Even without the gun.

Apparantly poor outdoor judgement is not limited to the left coast. I've seen a lot of ill prepared people on the trails around here as far back as my Scouting days.
As a parent I'm appled about the way the child was being treated and I have to agree with the other poster(s) about the baby. My wife and I have been hiking the local walking/jogging trails here in Clark County WA area and even through we are in the middle of civilization we still carry ample water, food, etc for us and our 16 mth old daughter. We are conditioning ourselves for more difficult hikes so we carry are also carrying the same gear we will carry in the woods. Of course our daughter has the best seat in the house riding around in this. http://www.deuterusa.com/products/productDetail.php?packID=kidcomfortIII&sub=family&tert=family

Nice pack Brian. Thanks for linking the other thread. I've been in the market for a new pack around that size. I had it narrowed down but after seeing that one I'm going to have to reconsider.

James, I think some people get lucky and get in and out, then think they can do it stupid everytime.

I was appalled at the baby situation, too.

I highly recommend the W.A.S.P. pack. It would be interesting to see if it might have some SAR applications.

I should mention that we also saw many well-prepared hikers, even a couple with proper child support systems and supplies. They weren't all stupid. But the stupid ones stand out because it is so shocking to witness it.

I was not implicating that everyone was ill prepared. You are right that the one's that are not do stand out and the ones who are don't get your attention.

I had not thought about SAR applications for the WASP. A could of ideas (ropes/medical) come to mind but I'm sure there are packs available already for the right price. I am looking for a pack for personal use but I like the idea of being able to discreetly carry a long arm. Altough I've been on a couple of searches where a long arm would have been a comforting friend to have along. A mission to recouver a group of drug task force officers from a pot field comes to mind off the top of my head.

No, Jim -- they WERE ill-prepared! You are right on, as I'm sure you know.

Your thoughts on the SAR applications for the WASP are interesting.

Waca waca thank a God no! :D

Actually, I'm the one who's been pushing hard getting back in shape. I loaded my pack with 85 lbs this time around...my dogs were yelping but recovered nicely by this morning.

I will be at WAR, yes, come hell or highwater!

Yes, indeed. Learned that early on in grizzly country. If you smell like gravy, you may find yourself waking up in mid-drag as they haul you off to eat you, or just kill you for not being their preferred dish that night. :D

Here, only pesty black bears. Actually, the only visit at night was around 2:30 am, when I was awakened by the sound and vibration of hooves. A white tail passed right by our tent. It was cool until the thing tripped on the paracord mounted on the side of the rainfly and shook the whole tent. I thought it might panic and tear down the damn thing. It grunted -- like it choked on its cud -- in surprise and I was shooing it away from inside the tent with my voice, "Git! git!" like a scolding pet owner...LOL.

Pesky deer! :D

Black Bear more than you think Brian more accustomed to Humans as a food supply… no scrap food then your next or the dog’s if their young and stupid or Hungry before denning down
Bye the Bye why did you not use your whistle to call back the stupid’s?
See you at WAR:D

Ah, yes, I am very familiar with Black bears. Bear's my favorite animal waca waca...

The stupids don't respond to whistles because they think they are hearing a strange spieces of bird. :D

See you at WAR.

By the By, just received this link from my brother...

Great pics! I especially like the sunset shot.

What is the geology of shining rock? It's hard to tell from the pics - could be a very light limestone, possibly marble, or massive quartz.

Edit to add: I just checked and it seems to be quartzite.
