I will generally ship a knife that I have sold before the Money order arrives. If the Buyer has been around the knife forums for a while and has no glaring GB&U issues and there are no red flags I will ship as soon as he tells me that the check is in the mail.

Just sold a knife and the buyer was shocked that I would ship before the check arrived and was in hand. He E-mailed and told me that most here would think I am nuts. I disagreed.

I am not just talking about the well known forumites but also those who have been here for long enough to establish their "forum personalty". I shipped to a Gold member with 250 posts before payment arrived because he appeared up front on BFC. This was his first deal here so he had zero GB&U activity. I just knew he was honest..........

So, does anyone else here do this???

I sometimes do the same as you Wolf, but it really depends upon who the buyer is. They need to have a pretty good rep, or somehow give me the impression they are trustworthy.

Let's just say that for someone like you, I would ship in advance of receiving payment.

As a new guy at this forum, a one time buyer and a non seller I for one would never expect someone to ship something out before recieving payment. It would be different if I'd had multiple dealings with a single seller or between good friends. Its my feeling that, between individuals, its the buyer who must take the risk and show trust and good faith by paying first.

That having been said, I find it very refreshing to know that there are many trustworthy and honorable people here- in so many places people would take advantage of your faith in them regardless of whether they are known to you or not. Your actions and the actions of the other buyers and sellers who show that amount of faith in their fellow man is very good for me to see.

I have sold several here for the first time recently. I first checked GB&U for comments on the buyers. In every case I shipped as soon as the deal was done and did not wait for the money first. I agree with Wolfmann about "forum personality". I tend to form an impression about people just by reading their post. I did have a few inquiries from some without feedback or many post. These inquires never got to sell stage. I'm not so sure I would have shipped first if it had come down to it. I will add that every deal I made went smooth as silk. Some good people around here.

Regularly, if I know the guy's reputation. Likewise, I'll also take personal checks from someone with a solid rep or from someone I've done business with before.

For the most part, knife and gun forums have a pretty strong code of honor, and provide a place that does a good job of self-policing themselves. I may get burned one day, but that's my choice in how to conduct business.

I don't ever commit to shipping before payment is received unless I've dealt with someone before or they're so widely known and respected it would be unthinkable for them to be crooks.

I have shipped before receiving payment after telling the buyer I was going to wait, but only after looking at more of their posts and searching TGB&U. I like to think this is a pleasant surprise for the buyer. :)

I don't ever expect anyone to ship me a knife before they have the money in hand, but it feels great to have someone ship early- both because of the explicit trust such an act requires, and because the knife will arrive sooner! :D

Its been done for me, I`ve done it for others

Its a great show of trust and respect.

No doubt there is going to be someone who betrays this trust,

Then its time to get midevil

But until then its great trading the "old way" :)

There are many on the forums that I would ship to before receiving payment.

As others have stated, I would never expect someone to ship me a knife without prepayment.

I agree that,

Its not an expectation, but when its extended to you, it

Makes you feel good that you are trusted.

Nothing wrong with waiting on funds. :)

T, G, B, & U? Help a new guy out without me having to use up what little brain cells I have left.

thanks

Ira, I do it all the time and have never been burnt.

Actually I did it today.

rmolk said he would send me a m.o. and I told him just to send me a personal check and I would get the knife (wood inlay Sebenza) out today.

I did check his posts before I did it though. ;)

Many people have done the same for me too.

I had one guy send me a knife without telling me where to send the check?

He said the address would be on the return lable if I liked the knife.

I just sold a spyderco moran featherweight today. The buyer emailed me and said the money order was in the mail. If I had an address I would've sent the knife. He has only 4 or 5 posts on the forums, but like its been said, you get a feel for the person during communication. Scfishr was like that, a great guy to do business with, and a true lover of knives. I have no worries about getting burned on BF, and the more posts a person has, and the longer they've been around, the more comfortable I think I would be in shipping the knife before the payment is actually in hand.

I too would accept personal checks from someone I've done business with before, and am comfortable with. BladeForums isn't like Ebay or Blade auction, where there is anonymity with the buyers. There is ONE seller on Ebay that I have done business with and am overly impressed with him. Other than that I expect payment to clear before shipping anything. On BF, however, you get to know people, and get a feel for them, and that breeds trust.

i haven't had a real opportunity to do this. before yesterday, i've only ever received Paypal; no one has sent me a money order until now. the fellow who sent off the MO is a brand new member, with only 7 posts. as such, i'm going to wait until payment arrives before sending his knives.

with an established member, i'd be more than happy to send his purchase out as soon as he gives me his address and says he's sending payment.

It's great to hear so many good things about interactions here. I'm happy to be around so many people who feel comfortable and trusting, and have had so many good experiences.

I would never expect anyone to ship a knife before receiving payment. It shows great respect and trust. Not to be taken lightly.

Pete1977,

That goes both ways. I have enjoyed our escapade wheeling and dealing, you are a great communicator.

The trust and respect are there  as with what is becoming many others.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY,

good communicators are much easier to trust, ;)

Just did deals with herbiedukeand and voracious, great, outstanding communicators

I have done it, and have never had any problems. I just give the GB&U a quick once over. As long as I see no huge negatives I will ship out as soon as it is convienient for me, even if I haven't got the payment yet.

Heck, I even shipped out a watch I was trading to be insected before a solid deal was struck. I just shipped the watch out to the member, and told him to give it a check and see how he liked it. I tend to doubt that someone who has been around for a decent amount of time, and has a good reputation here would screw that up for a free item.
