Shipping pocket knives USPS illegal

Considoring the last Knife I bought from Tito here on the forums took a month to recieve from the date of shipping, and they had no tracking or signatures accept for the original at shipping and mine at recieving, this post here just adds to my list of reasons NOT to ship USPS! Period! To much red-tape and BS besides the local PO Employees having their wires crossed on policy, prices etc.

I have been using the other shippers for quite some time with great success. At least their quality of service stays consistant with their postage and shipping prices.

And I have had exactly the opposite results from the USPS. In the dozens of packages that I have had shipped through them, I have never had one problem.

The post office in question has been provided, by USPS Headquarters, with an explanation of the rules, i.e. knives that are not swithblades are not restricted in any way other than the requirement they be packaged so they don't come out through the side of the package. Now we're waiting for the original poster to have another knife shipment to send out so we can see if the PO folks now understand that they should accept the knives in the mail.

Thanks for the update, Mycroftt, I never really doubted that anything different would be the result.

But, in truth, I was hoping the OP would man-up and admit that he was mistaken and possibly even rescind some of his impolite comments.

There is an an awful lot of verbiage here and as usual, much ado about nothing. Just follow one simple rule: Don't Ask-Don't Tell.

I mail long guns and handguns (legally) all the time with no problems. It is none of the clerks business what is in the box as long as it's legal. I try not to have anything in either address that says gun or knife. Use the persons name instead of his business name.

The only problem I ever had was when I was shipping a shotgun to Puerto Rico. The clerk knew who I worked for and what I was shipping and told me that I couldn't mail a gun to a foreign country. It took to other clerks and the post master to convince the moron that PR was part of the USA. (BTW, the shotgun was going to a postal inspector)

Got that all the time. People would walk up to the stamp window and ask a clerk with a Hispanic name on their nameplate if they spoke English. You want real fun, get between Puerto Rican and Dominican employees who are insulting each others' ethnic backgrounds in Spanish. I was good, I kept the peace. :D

USPS does not provide tracking on any mail other than Express Mail. Other classes of mail can use Delivery Confirmation or Signature Confirmation which entitled the purchaser of the service to exactly two scans - one at acceptance and one at delivery. So it sounds to me that you got full value for the 70 cents you paid for Delivery Confirmation or $2.35 you paid for Signature Confirmation - but you got outrageously slow delivery. We currently have a lively discussion of the USPS confirmation services going on in the Political Arena, but it's hidden in a thread about Obama's health plan. One of the posters there says he regularly gets more scans than the 2 you are entitled to with Delivery Confirmation or Signature Confirmation.

My own experience is more like yours - I get the acceptance and delivery scans, as specified in the product descriptions for DelCon and SigCon, and only rarely anything more.

He has legitimately been mistreated by his local post office. They are misinformed and he has been very patient as we try to get the situation resolved and he has put a lot of effort into it. He and I have exchanged more than 20 PMs and we aren't out of the woods yet. Let's get the situation fixed and see how the whole thing shakes out. Then everybody will have a chance to weigh in at the post mortem. :)

I really don't care what the OP does. What I think is important is that we have this thread for future reference in case we run into someone else that gets the same treatment from their local PO.

It is being handled directly with my postmaster by washington DC headquarters.. Sorry i can't say more than that right now.

Man, I don't think I'd mess with the Postmaster General. :D

Here is an update. After my local post office was contacted by USPS washington DC headquarters I waited a week to ship another knife. (Pacific Salt to Tom krein for a regrind) I asked if I could ship and insure a knife and the postal cleark said no and referred to the chart again. Then i aksed if they heard of any changes and she said no. I then asked for the postmaster and a woman who is in charge of shipping came out and said that they got an email. I asked if this email has any effect on changes and if the staff would be properly trained. She said yes and said they have. Then the clerk (surprisingly) stepped up and said no we have not heard anything or had any training. The shipping mgr then walked away like it never happened.

I also had a meeting with the postmaster two weeks ago in his office when he received the letter/email from Washington headquarters so they are well aware of this situation BUT THEY JUST DON'T CARE. At least that is what I read into their actions and demeanor.

So i sent the knife secretly...ILLEGALLY.. (I never told them what was in the box) to Tom Krien and could not get insurance .

Just because you and your local postal clerk are unable or unwilling to understand the regulations still does not make it illegal.

Great advice. If you are in my neighborhood why don't you stop in and tell them that. See how far that gets ya.

I live in CT. and 2 weeks ago I shipped a knife to OKC (Ontario Knife Co.) in New york, I had no problem shipping thru USPS priority mail, with insurancre of $100 and a tracking #. The only problem was that it cost me another $12.00 to ship back to company for defect. Last week I received a custom knife from Justin Gingrich (Ranger Knives) and he sent me the knife thru USPS w/ insurance w/out a problem either. Thats strange

They say you can ship back to a manufacturer. That is what the "yes" marks are on the chart they use. Just not to private individuals.

But they will not allow insurance (at least my post office) because when this started i shipped a knife to spyderco and they said if it has to be shipped back for warranty, I can not insure it for any value.
